Lamar Odom taking talent to Spain

February 17, 2014

By Marc Stein | ESPN.com

"Lamar Odom is on the verge of launching his basketball comeback in Spain.

Sources with knowledge of Odom's thinking told ESPN.com that the 34-year-old has reached an agreement in principle to sign a deal with Laboral Kutxa in Spain's top league.

Such deals typically contain out clauses that allow established veterans such as Odom to return to the NBA if the opportunity arises, but sources said Monday that Odom's plan is to play out the rest of this season in Spain before determining whether to attempt an NBA comeback.

Misko Raznatovic, who heads up European operations for the agency (Excel Sports Management) that represents Odom, hinted at the signing by tweeting that "the biggest bomb on European market is coming for this year!!!" on Tuesday.

A free agent since completing the 2012-13 season with the Los Angeles Clippers, Odom appeared close to a return to the NBA in November, when new Clippers coach Doc Rivers invited Odom to the team's practice facility to gauge the state of his game and well-being following a tumultuous summer.

Rivers went so far as telling NBA.com's Scott Howard-Cooper at the time that he was "hoping things work out" with re-signing Odom.

But the Clippers ultimately decided to sign three of Odom's veteran peers instead: Stephen Jackson, Hedo Turkoglu and Sasha Vujacic. Although only Turkoglu has stuck, sources say Odom has decided to relaunch his career far removed from the NBA spotlight in the Basque city of Vitoria-Gasteiz, where he'll team up with a familiar NBA face in Andres Nocioni.

Other current NBA standouts who have played for the same club -- long known as Tau Ceramica -- include Goran Dragic, Luis Scola, Jose Calderon and Tiago Splitter.

The Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers both registered interest in signing Odom last summer until his private life became a near-daily subject for the tabloid media. Odom's divorce from reality TV star Khloe Kardashian was made official in December.

The news that Odom was in talks with the Spanish club was first reported Monday by leading European basketball correspondent David Pick." http://es.pn/1fugc1a

Well there goes ONE of our potential signees taken away from us. Next will be Ivan Johnson.

Doc hints at some moves , but We have to improve this team. I know the argument that in the Playoffs the bench will not matter! YES IT WILL. When key guys get in foul trouble early like Blake and DJ tend to do you do not want 3rd string scrubs coming in during Game 7 of the WCF do you? Neither Do you want to go small where a Jared Dudley could be guarding Lamarcus Aldridge or Serge Ibaka. We have to make some moves and I believe some will be made.

PLAYA VISTA Clippers head coach Doc Rivers says the Clippers are going to eventually make a roster move, he's just unsure when it will happen.

"We're going to [sign a player to a 10-day contract], but we're not sure if it's going to be for Sasha [Vujacic] or someone else," Rivers said. "And I don't know when we're going to do one, but we'll do one eventually."

Vujacic, 29, had his initial 10-day deal expire on Feb. 12. He is eligible to sign a second one, but the Clippers have not done so yet, instead deciding to keep the roster at 14 players. They may be inclined to wait until after Thursday's trade deadline to make any additions, according to Rivers.

"That's why you don't want to do a 10-day because you don't want to have the extra contract," Rivers said. "You may need [the roster spot]. I don't think anything is going to happen, honestly. But you just never know."

As is always the case at this time of year, Rivers said the team is evaluating what is out there. That doesn't mean, however, that they will make a move.

"There are always a lot of phone calls," Rivers said. "That's what our jobs are and everyone else's job. We're not out there looking for anything or looking to move anyone, but people are calling. And so you do listen."

Rivers has been adamant for the past two months that he likes the current Clippers roster and even with J.J. Redick, who is expected to sit out for the fifth game in a row Tuesday against the Spurs, still nursing a sore right hip and Willie Green on the mend from the same injury, it has not changed Rivers' stance.

We need Small Forward Help and Big Man Help. SOMETHING HAS GOT TO HAPPEN. Wizards improving themselves and T-Wolves improving themselves getting

@EyeOnBasketball: Report: Grizzlies, Wolves discussing trade involving Chase Budinger, Tayshaun Prince, J.J. Barea, Tony Allen

Clippers will do something. Doc sees it and I am sure the front office sees it. This team would be set up like the Trailblazers right about now with Neil Oshey Very Happy

Nice to see Lamar get a chance to play somewhere. If playing basketball professionally again provides him with the stability he needs, here's hoping he finds it, wherever that may be. But I will miss him as a "Clipper". Good Luck

I hope Lamar finds his way back to the NBA after his stint in Spain. It seems like a good plan for him to play there, get his NBA legs back, and stay away from the limelight. Being far away from the Kardashians is the right way to go too, lol. Get straightened out, Lamar!

The deal is for two-months, maybe he's getting in shape to sign with us before the playoffs.

If it is for that long it seems most likely that he is doing it to get game ready for a playoff team. The Clippers, another team or just to make him a better prospect for any offer that might come along..................who knows?

Now I don't know what the nba rules are, AND someone will have to get the INSIDE scoop on how lamar's doing in Europe, but if he's even 80 per cent of last year's form, shouldn't we get him back now to gel with the team by the playoffs? I can't see anyone beating us AT ALL if he comes back healthy and productive! So what should we do if he's ready? Grab him now, or why not?

Heard he's been awful in Spain against lesser competition.

He hasn't played in the NBA this year, so he is playoff eligible even if he signs the last day of the season, like Tracy McGrady last year. He signed only a two month contract, which ends right around the same time as the NBA regular season, so if someone wants him, he should be available.

He's only played two games so far and he's not done too well, he's slow and fouling and turning the ball over a lot.

I read a Hoopshype tweet last week that said Lamar had a back injury and results were being sent to the U.S. for a second opinion. If this is the case, he's in worse shape than ever.

A) odom has sucked a fat one in Spain.

B) we can't add anyone else to the team for the playoff run as far as i know. teams are as is, unless that was just the last day to be bought out and still join a playoff team.

B) yes you can, IF that FA player has not played in the current NBA season. Those type of FA's are still eligible till the last regular game of the year.
