Marc Stein ‏@ESPNSteinLine now

Clippers, I'm told, recently worked out Ivan Johnson after his China stint and are looking at a 10-day deal for former Hawk @kevinarnovitz

He is a 6'8" small PF who was in China because no NBA team wanted him at his asking price. No proven success in the NBA so far. So I don't see how he is helpful. When Blake goes to the bench, are you going to put in a 6'8" guy....really, in the playoffs.

He's a better version of Reggie Evans I think at his age now

Most likely no real impact. If he was any good, he'd be in NBA by now. Can't even give an opinion on him, since teams in China's league would have trouble competing with college teams.

Added him to the CTB player database, which means his youtube videos are showing up now. He looks quick for a big guy, and maybe can even play some SF. Good rebounding rate. Here are his stats:

http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/6534/ivan-johnson

He'd be a good signing.

Ivan would make much more noise than Mullens Jamison and Hollins combined, so yeah you put him in off the bench. Most people here would love Jason Maxiell or Blair, this guy is in that mold. High energy guy who will scare anybody off of trying to cheap shot Blake or anybody else on the Clips. Reggie is 6'8 too, he should play power forward.

Here are his stats from China- even had a 54 point and 19 rebound game:

So what happens to Turk who was showing production facilitating and rebounding off the bench? Neither guy can play C and we have 3 SF's even if Reggie slides to SG we have two guys ahead who can't be shut down for nothing.

@IceColdClipper, I would play Ivan with Blake at Center. Hedo I would play with DJ at Center. Ivan brings a lot more physicality to the front court than Hedo. Hedo brings a lot more playmaking, and both can shoot decently. Hedo is a better shooter from distance, but Ivan doesn't have to be under the rim. You can't just walk away and let him shoot from 12-15 by himself.

Obviously Ivan has to mesh with the team, as well as learn Doc's system. He has a lot of potential in my opinion, and at the very least brings physicality and hustle.

So Doc will scrap his entire second unit idea and keep one of the bigs on the floor at all times or pair one of the bigs with Hollins. What happened to needing another long big man anyway it goes Doc has work to do.

Oops thought the deadline was later. Not good that we have issues at the wing position. We have 3 SFs but none of them are starting caliber. In fact, none of them have shown much promise even as a backup this season.

Hopefully we can solve our backup big issue at least.

I'm not sure of Ivan's standing reach, and against certain line ups I don't think it would be far fetched. With 3 spots though I would prefer a longer player who's got a little more length. The perfect test would be against Memphis. I'll say this I would prefer Ivan against Zach than Hedo vs Zach for whatever short stretch that might happen.

It's a 10 day, and what if it is the Reggie effect that we have been missing. I don't see any downside to this signing.

1969 NBA minutes, 15.8 mpg. 6.5 pts, 3.9 rebs, 51.7% FG. 15/9 per 36 with a 15 or so PER. He wasn't worth his asking price, but he's certainly worth a 10 day and a minimum contract.

What in the world are you expecting from the free agent market at this time of the year?

Yep shouldn't hurt. He's not going to rebound as well as Reggie, but looks to have a much better knack for scoring. I mean being able to rack up 54 points in any league is pretty impressive.

Guy is a tough bruiser no doubt but he must of had a total mind set 180 because coming here to be a situation player was what we asked of him earlier in the year.

Reggie has no scoring knack. Johnson averaged 15 pts/36 in the NBA over almost 2000 minutes on 52% FG and can hit from mid-range. Him and Reggie aren't really similar players outside of height.

He has put up productive numbers in the nba but he has a history of attitude problems.

That's icing on the cake being able to hit the medium J. Hopefully his attitude issues are a thing of the past.

What I see from the videos is that he is quick, and that is big for the Doc Rivers defense.

Ivan the Terrible back in the league. He was already a defensive guy under the Hawks with Larry Drew , but I am scared of what this guy can do under Doc Rivers. Scared for....

@agent0 when I compare Ivan to Reggie I do in regards to the energy, tenacity, along with the physicality. Reggie is probably one of the best rebounders in the league, and is inept offensively. Ivan's energy reminds me of Reggie and Amundson, but is much better offensively than either.

This with a little more offensive game, very physical down in the block, should help with our rebounding woes, would be a good addition

I would love to get Ivan.He is the tough player we need down low.He is undersized height wise but is a big body who battles for position for rebounds and easy buckets. We would probably go small with Hedo at the 4 and Johnson at the 5 but realistically they both will play 15 min or less.Hope we sign this guy,he is mean and would play well off the bench for us.

We are going to go up against Miami, San Antonio, Oklahoma, or Indiana in the playoffs with that plan. Good Luck

I still don't see what the rest of you see in Johnson. "Toughness" is one of the most overrated aspects of a player, especially if they don't have much in the way of other skills. If the Clippers get him, I'll wish him the best, but I'm not holding my breathe.

He's a slightly below average PF overall, above average rebounder and a decent defender. Compared to Jamison it's a huge upgrade. I'll take he's supposed bad attitude.

He does have other skills, he's a good rebounder and a fairly good scorer who can score at the basket or make jumpers. He's also pretty good at forcing turnovers.

In China he was evening making three pointers, although I don't really expect him to do that here.

Don't know about China, but when he was in the NBA, he was only averaging about 3-4 rebounds a game. His scoring numbers aren't exactly impressive, either. Don't know about how good he is at forcing turnovers.

If we're going to go with an undersized big, I would much rather have Big Baby.

Only played in 15-16 mins a game so the rebound numbers will be "low". But PER 36 mins indicate he's above average in that department. He's be fine.

Big Baby on the other hand is an below average rebounder who suffered a achilles injury on Wednesday.

True, his numbers are low because of minutes. I still don't trust a guy who had to go to China because no one wanted him though.

Big Baby doesn't have amazing rebounding numbers, but he's good enough that I'm willing to take a chance on him. As for his "injury", it's only a sore achilles, not a tear or anything all that major.

Plenty of teams wanted him, but he got more guaranteed money in China and knew he could just come back now and have no problem getting picked up again and picking up a second check from a second team.
