Madelyn Burke @MadelynBurke 18m

Joakim Noah wins 2013-14 NBA Defensive Player of the Year. #Clippers center DeAndre Jordan finishes third in voting.

Proud of DJ! Doc has made him a huge piece to our team. I never doubted DJ and look where he is now. Obviously, he only finished 3rd, but that is still such a great improvement. DJ for MIP!!

Can't argue with Noah winning... guy's a beast. But I'm happy for DJ. Next year, buddy!

Very fair. Noah is the clear winner here and I assumed DJ would be 2nd or 3rd.

Did anyone else see the Washington Chicago Game? Nene gave Noah a pretty hard time guarding him. I guess Noah does deserve something for taking his team to the playoffs, however I'm picking Washington to win the series.

Noah post all star break was the 4th best player in the game, arguably 3rd with Griffin. He was incredibly dominant. I think he deserved stronger consideration in previous years, so it's good to see him get recognition. Nene is a very skilled center, one game where he schools a defensive anchor is too small of a sample for me to disqualify him for DPOY.

Well, Noah deserved it, and Jordan also deserved the recognition too. He had a nice season, and that is one of the key reasons the Clippers improved this season.

Third is what DJ deserved. Hopefully next year he can improve his rim protection stats. Hibbert, with his excellent rim protection numbers should have been ahead of DJ.

Nice going big fella, I knew you had it in you.

It's great that DJ was in the DPOY conversation and even greater that he came in third. That's quite an accomplishment as compared to his last year's production. Way to go, DJ! Keep it up and you'll get that DPOY award in no time.

I think it is great for DJ, but I will bring a little damper and say that honestly, I'm not sure I believe that DJ was the 3rd most impactful defensive player in the league, or even the 3rd most impactful C on defense. I know his league leading RPG helped, but DJ still has some issues on defense that make him above average, but not overall a very good or great defender.

I think when locked in he is the most impactful. As we know that's not all the time.

He's getting better, don't want to trash him or knock him. I will however trashhis foul shooting which he just has to make respectable. Hell

Never be Jj redick from line but needs to be over 50 percent

The foul shooting certainly is a struggle, he had a little stretch where he seemed to have figured it out after he stopped doing the super high arch, but he's back struggling again. Maybe over the summer if he keeps working with the different trajectory FT he can get up to like 55%

DJ finished 3rd in Defensive Win Shares behind Joakim Noah 1st and Paul George 2nd.. So I'd say he was that Impactful and the Numbers back that up. Plus even if the numbers didn't we could all clearly see that the Defense was Horrid when he was not in the game, But hey I'm a DJ "Guy".

I agree. Bigs with jump shots have continued to be a huge problem for him. His rim protection leaves much to be desired, he still is prone to chasing for the highlight dunk. He's not exactly DPOY caliber yet. Then again, Hibbert hasn't been that for a long time and people still overrate his defense as well. Without the verticality bullshit, he gets exposed.

Congrats to the big fella! He has improved so much since last season, and a lot of it was just being given the opportunity, and given the trust and confidence by his coach. Now if he can get to 55 to 60% FT next season, he'd really be something.

I don't think he is a top 3 defender but he doesn't have to be. His defense is already very good but I wouldn't say elite. He has difficulties dealing with jump shots and his rim protection could be a bit better(its improved a lot from the beginning of the season). The thing he needs to improve most on are his free throws. Everything else is gravy. DJ overall has been superb.

Even though I think 3rd might be a tad too high, DJ is proving his real value in these playoffs. Dubs can't handle his size and energy down low.

That block on Lee is what I've been waiting for. That is the first time I've seen DJ go after a block (straight up) against a big. he really showed me something last night. He's also shown up big in the playoffs this post season so I have absolutely nothing bad to say about his post-season performance. Keep it up DJ, make sure you don't let up in Oracle.

Every player has lapses and even the two players above him went through it. If Hibbert was a clipper he would of been killed more so than dj was even last year for the effort and drop off he has taken on defense and offense. Noah has had his own struggles but he gets the extra boost from doing it without Rose and after Deng was dealt. Thibs, Gibson and Butler also contribute to the overall Bulls defensive image.

Next season I want him to perfect his D and the season after to start playing some O, he has a decent jump/baby hook, maybe even over both shoulders. Though he needs to learn not to get stripped while making the move.

Defensive win shares is based off defensive rating. Individual defensive rating unlike team defensive rating or on/off defensive rating is an estimate based off defensive rebounds, blocks and steals which are called "stops".

From basketball-reference, we can get this:

Out of necessity (owing to a lack of defensive data in the basic boxscore), individual Defensive Ratings are heavily influenced by the team's defensive efficiency. They assume that all teammates are equally good (per minute) at forcing non-steal turnovers and non-block misses, as well as assuming that all teammates face the same number of total possessions per minute.

In short, individual defensive rating is not necessarily an accurate measure of defense, and subsequently, neither would defensive win shares. The offensive ratings in conjunction with usage rates are a much better gauge of offensive impact, and therefore offensive win shares is a more accurate stat, since the box score has a lot more significant offensive stats. Defensive RAPM would be a better measure, or team Drtg when the player is on/off, again, not perfect measures, you need to support them with other things.

Defensive rating and defensive win shares are an attempt to estimate, but their accuracy isn't so good. Basically the individual defensive rating of Clippers players would be based on the team defensive rating, the assumption that each player contributes equally to the team defensive rating, then extra points for defensive rebounds, steals and blocks. DJ has the highest sum of those stats on the team, therefore DJ get's the lowest Drtg.

If we look at on/off Drtg, Blake and Paul are better. If we look at defensive RAPM, DJ is average and again Blake and Paul are better. From watching the games, I don't see DJ as a shut down, elite defender, but I do see him as an above average defender who is much improved, but like someone mentioned (I think JQuick), he still sucks at guarding anyone who can shoot from outside, he still seems to struggle with getting to spots on time, and with contesting consistently at the basket. He doesn't harass the pick and roll like a guy like Bosh for example does.

Icecold, I'm not saying DJ is bad, I'm just saying he isn't the third highest impact defender in the league, and he's not yet an elite defensive player. I'm also not saying he isn't allowed to have lapses, I'm saying there are higher level defenders who are more consistently high impact moment to moment, night to night. Yes, Hibbert is one of them, but Hibbert has other faults, M.Gasol is one, Noah like you mentioned, KG is still a higher impact defender, Duncan and Splitter is actually quite good himself, I know people like to hate him, but Dwight is a higher impact defender.

I mean come on, I was one of the people telling people not to hate on him and to give him a chance, I have nothing against the guy, I like him a lot, but that doesn't mean I can't say that while he's improved and is an above average to good defender, he's not great or elite on defense. I do believe he will continue to improve also, and I believe there are stretches where he can be great.

interesting seeing how Noah is struggling himself against a jump shooting big like NeNe

Agent0

Come on, really? You have to know that this isn't really a good point, right? With that said, is that how we would categorize Nene? Nene can shoot, but he's primarily been a face-up and pick and roll big man, jump shooting big is not the descriptive term for Nene.

Now, don't get me wrong, that doesn't deny the fact that Nene has been killing him with his outside shooting over the first two games, but that's not really Nene's label, but either way, Noah struggling against Nene doesn't make a case for DJ, that's what I mean by not sure how that helps anything. We've already agreed that everyone will have struggles.

The point is Noah is having issue stopping NeNe"s jump shot from going in which people knock on Jordan even though both players contest the shots. All a player can ever do is contest a shot if the player won't put the ball on the floor. The point is not to label NeNe as a jump shooter but highlighting an ability he has to hit jump shots amdhow Noah is defending it in comparison to Jordan. Marc Gasol is a guy that people use the most to critc Jordans perimeter defense but if shots are falling what else can be done?

The way DJ's been playing this post season and season, he's my DPOY no QUESTION. 10 blocks in 2 games, but it's more than that, when he's there he changes the opponent's whole offense.

Icecoldclipper
CTB MVP X2

To add Noah struggling with NeNe going at him was not trying to say DJ should of automaatically be number one. It was more noting that effort in the previous two post seasons against Gasol if the jump shot is on its simply little you can do as a big. Those comments to Jquicks comment.

To you agent I think the overall impact people you listed is bigger argument of appreciation in itself. Garnett has been useless this year and again if Jordan did what Hibbert has done so far the second half and into the post season would killed. Can't see how those guys are granted more impactful night to night when they had extreme drop offs. Jordan's climb came with two things greater coaching confidence and more minutes.

Not on defense, the Nets have played way better defense with him on floor. His problem this year has been offense and health where he's been really bad at both.

I'd probably take Duncan as my DPOY this year; all of Jordan, Hibbert and Noah have been a little too inconsistent. Igoudala might be a good choice too, if you don't mind a non-big. Marc Gasol might have won again if he was healthy all year.

I still think DJ is improving and if he continues on this path he can definitely get it next year and maybe some back to back DPOY awards to his resume. He's looked incredible in the playoffs so far.

I don't have a problem with Noah winning the award or the placement. I do think it's a little uneven when you look at the teams. Chicago has great defenders in more than one position. Butler and Gibson are stellar defenders and outside of point guard they are at average if not better defenders. Hibbert has probably the most stacked defensive team in the NBA. This has to help them out when they don't have to account with the same amount of dribble penetration. It's really hard to tell the actual difference, there are way too many variables to decipher their overall contribution.

Happy for DJ, I'm sure he can make people think they should have voted him as the winner with a strong showing in the Playoffs and the Finals.

DJ also finished 5th in "most improved player" voting...

Hell of a season for him. Should at least get an all-star nod next year if he keeps it up.

BTW, Blake was 7th... from an "A" to an "A+" is quite an improvement too, I guess. Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_16

DJ is proving this playoffs why he will be Next Years DPOY.

He is by far playing the best Defense (Especially at C) in the playoffs.

I have to disagree with Agent0 that DJ wasn't the 3rd most impactful player

on defense.

I think your bias comes from the fact you watch more DJ play

than anything.

If you watch Roy Hibbert this season he is no where near the Defensive

Anchor he was in the 2 playoff series vs the heat. In fact it's safe to say

his reputation is what keeps his name afloat as best defenders.

Many indiana games I watched this season West looked better on defense than hibbert.

I do agree that DJ isn't "Great" yet, only because of his pick and roll defense

which he over traps, but has gotten better over the season, and have played

it to perfection the first 2 games of the playoffs.

Once DJ is consistent on guarding the pick n Roll and running jump shooting bigs

off their shot instead of trying to stick close to the paint where he is comfortable.

Playoff DJ >>> Regular Season DJ

He looks incredible. I was always aware that he could possibly fizzle out in the Playoffs, but it looks like he's doing the exact opposite.

The Spurs held the Mavericks to 85 points in game 1. Jordan is doing fine, but by far the best is probably a stretch.

Bro that is "The spurs" not someone playing individual defense.

DJ has like 10 blocks in 2 games.

we beat a team by like 40.

Who is playing better defense than DJ right now?

Call me a prophet, cause I called it. Told you DJ secretly mastered the art of the free throw and just pretended to be bad in the regular season so he could thwart the hack a DJ strategy in the playoffs. Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_08

Your claim was that he was by far the best, if that was true we wouldn't have given up 109 points the first game; blocks are nice, but they aren't everything. Duncan is a least close, if not doing better and the team results show it.

In addition to Duncan guys like Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka, Tony Allen and Trevor Ariza have played strong defensively in the playoffs as well.
