Shelly Sterling said Wednesday she hopes to keep ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers and believes she is legally entitled to do so.

Sterling will attempt to keep the Clippers after the NBA banned her husband, Donald Sterling, due to racist remarks. Shelly Sterling called herself a "die-hard" fan of the Clippers and said the sanctions against Donald Sterling do not apply to "me or my family."

I was afraid of this. I may just stop watching the NBA if she's still a part owner. Nobody in their right minds comes here with a Sterling as an owner.

The NBA league needs to ban her as well, particularly when you consider her role in all those discrimination lawsuits and her posing as a health inspector to illegally enter tenants' apartments to document their ethnicities. She is despicable and cannot be trusted at all. Ugh. All the Sterlings need to go.

I hope all the players boycott if she remains on the scene. This is a travesty.

Reasoning is twofold:

  1. They have the ammunition against her to ban her, if it comes to that. She's caught on tape being the Darth Vader to sterling's emperor. She can just be banned for life to on the grounds that her conduct is racially divisive.

  2. The commissioner has been really good about the players union being involved. They won't allow this, and the clippers organization won't either. They all want her gone

Again, she's not owning the team. As soon as Donald is voted out, the NBA is granted full control over the team according to the bylaws and can sell to whoever they want. Shelly is delusional and living in a dream world. Like her husband, she doesn't have a leg to stand on in court either, as the NBA has hard proof of a breach of contract.

Don't know if anyone clicked on that link I posted yesterday, it was a piece with Darren ravel(?) talking about the DTS situation and the leagues perceived legal strategy. After listening to it I got the overwhelming impression that Shelly is in fact what is preventing the league from moving quicker on the legal front. Yes the team is held in a trust and I don't have the foggiest idea if that simplifies or complicates matters for the league from a legal standpoint. From day one, Shelly has tried to separate herself from Donald, endear herself to Doc &....

I guess at a certain point.. U forget how laws work when u have so much money.. She's accustom of just paying her way to get everything and anything she want. I can imagine her thinking.. " but wait, I'm rich and I'm white, what do u mean no"

I hope the NBA finds a good owner, not a black person for the sake of having a black person. I feel like they are so hell bent on evening the scales of this whole fiasco by having a black owner, that it might come back and bite us in the @ss. I just hope that whoever the next owner is, they are passionate about winning and have deep pockets, no matter their race.

No Sterling period! A year ago if I say Sterling is the worst owner in sports history, I would get a lot of flack. But I don't think anyone will even attempt to defend Sterling Donald and Shelly

Last week I told you guys this would happen and most here said no way would she try. You just knew it was coming when in every interview she introduced herself as co-owner. She doesn't want to get burned like Jamie McCourt was burned.

It's weird that in 2014, the faces of racism in America are Jewish couple who were both alive during the Hollacaust, MLK, and Civil Rights movement. Kinda remind me of Dave Chapelle skit where the leader of the *** is a black man

As a STH heading into my 14th year, my initial reaction to the DTS thing was, "I can't renew my seats". When the punishment was metered out I said, "I can renew my seats".

With now Shelly looking prepared to fight I'm back in the "I can't renew my seats" again.

I'm curios as to what other STH are planning to do assuming that POS retains ownership next year?

22 yr STH here. What a hypocrite Shelly is agreeing with the Andy Roeser removal. It will get ugly for a while. Unfortunately it will probably fall to the players, Doc, even Ralph Lawler, to assure her they will all be gone if she insists on retaining ownership.

And yes, if she stays on, we won't renew either.

This is my initial reaction to because that lady is just DTS in drag but I think she is even nuttier (FYI,9 year STH, 25 year fan),but I am going to base my final decision on what our team and our coach does. I stay as long as they stay. They go, I hold the door open for them and lock behind myself as we all leave.

I am not a lawyer, but I don't think that you guys are taking the prospect of her keeping the team seriously enough (if it matters to you, that is).

Trusts are basically holding accounts for assets. They make it easier for you to will your assets to whomever you like without the litigation that surrounds probate. That doesn't really apply here.

What does apply here is that, if the trust that owns the Clippers is truly the "Sterling Family Trust" with other beneficiaries than Donald (I.E. Shelly and the kids), then, even if he has been making the decisions as the owner of the Clippers, he technically isn't the owner - they all are.

This is where it seems like most of you aren't understanding the ramifications. If Shelly distances herself from Sterling - which she has done - and decides to divorce him, she entitled to her half of his estate as delineated by community property laws. If this is the case, the NBA can't seize her share of the team because the decree, concerning Donald Sterling, doesn't apply to her.

In other words, the league would have to make a new sanction, indicting Shelly Sterling. What would prompt that? Years old news reports? Popular opinion?

I don't think so.

The only hope we would have in that situation is that the league's bylaws give them the absolute power to oust her for doing... absolutely nothing. And, if they did do that, even with the support of the NBPA, they would basically be taking away all of the power that every owner in the NBA has. Why? Because now we've set the precedent that we should be able to remove any team owner on a whim.

Now, I don't care about that. **** those billionaires. But I'm pretty sure Mark Cuban, Jimmy Dolan and Dan Gilbert do care. And that's a huge problem.

So, don't get me wrong, I want the Sterlings out as much as you all do. You all know me, I'm a diehard fan from years ago, but I might be forced away from this team and that truly saddens me. And the one thing that many of you don't seem to get is that, legally, she's in the right here.

^ I see what you're saying, Mac, but if the Sterling family trust is the current owner, then it is the Sterling family trust that will be stripped of ownership. Same way as if a GM tampers or a coach cheats, the team is punished in addition to the individual.

I'm pretty sure Silver is on firm legal ground, or else he wouldn't have pursued this course of action. The NBA is just like a private club where the members democratically call the shots, and while the owners are undoubtedly wary of the precedent this sets (see Cuban's comments), Silver has them over the proverbial barrel of public opinion.

I see your point, Cleepers. And I seriously hope that you're right.

I definitely agree that public opinion being on Silver's side is a huge boon to the cause. Just not sure it's such an open-and-shut case.

^ Yeah, I still don't see Sterling going quietly, but since he was the one who was originally approved as an owner - with all the rights, responsibilities and privileges that brings - there's no way they let his old lady start shot-calling in his absence... it'd just be a puppet regime.

If they can get rid of him, she doesn't stand a chance.

Yep, I agree. She MAY have had a chance if she was divorcing The Donald and claiming community rights a la the ex dodger owner(s).

Just a another bug on the windshield the NBA will have to wipe clean.

Her owning the team is like if Jeb Bush were elected president. The Sterling name is just too toxic now, Doc and the players would leave.

Also, she's a known racist herself who was involved in the housing discrimination.

Just saw on CNN that Sterling is planning to fight the sale. Plus cooper said he had an off the record conversation talk with Sterling which he cannot discuss but he said that Sterling arrived with V. Stivianno. Apparently those 2 are still hanging out. This is gonna be messy

I think this case is gonna be about as cut and dry as it can get.

The Sterling family trust via Donalds Sterling has irrevocably damaged the Clippers ,The NBA ,and the franchises of the other owners .Shelley owning the team will be seen as no different than Donald owning the team in the eyes of sponsors, players and the majority of fans.

Shelly is now okay with DTS' share in the team being sold. Now the NBA has to convince her to sell too.

I don't understand Shelly's hubris in clinging to a team when her staying on is extremely detrimental to all players (not just the Clippers) and to the NBA. The writing is on the wall yet she refuses to do the right thing. I hope the NBA gets rid of her too. What a nuisance.

Let's see,why would any mega-rich person want to hold onto something that is making mega-bucks?

What Miss Shelly isn't thinking about is her billion dollar team ain't gonna be worth shite if she hangs on. When everyone leaves, the Washington Generals would be able to beat what is left. Not to mention playing for an empty house.

Can someone clear this up for me? If Shelly is entitled by marriage to 50% of Donald's Ownership and Donald is removed from ownership, he then has no ownership meaning the 50% of Donald's ownership....

I find it pretty funny that the Clippers organization actually gets a vote to oust Sterling. I would have assumed that only the other 29 owners would vote.

Kinda like giving the defendant a seat in the jury box.

Dear Miss Pain in the Arse.......

We get you are a "fan of the team". We here are fans of the team too. We want nothing but the best for our team,as should you. In order for all of us to have the best team we can have, we need no one named Sterling (or Tokowitz, or whatever) associated with this team.

You are 79 years old and let's face it, you don't have a lot of trips around the sun left. Wouldn't you like to see this team you are a fan of win an NBA championship before you are pushing up daisys? The best way to accomplish this is to sell your team. Take your 500 million and enjoy what you have left in your life.

If you don't sell, the team you are a fan of will be no more. The current roster will leave and you'll bargaining hunting for a team that would play for someone like you and it won't be pretty. When the team you are a fan of goes 0-82 because of you, will you still be a fan?

You are a big fan? Well with 500 million you could probably afford nice courtside seats for the rest of your life, or even a fancy luxury box so you don't have to hang around with the low lifes which are us.

Miss Shelly,do the right thing, do us all a favor, and stop this nonsense. Sell your team. Take your money. Enjoy what is left of your life.

Signed

A Clipper fan who is also a big fan of this team, not of the ownership though.
