Clippers also pursuing Lawrence Frank and Wizards Sam Cassell , sources. Nothing Finals As Of Yet. Cassell Could also entice Trevor Ariza if they developed any relationship in Washington ....

I'm not that high on Mike Woodson, I like the idea of Lawrence Frank and Sam Cassell.

I'm actually against the idea of Mike Woodson. I can't think of anything I like from him on the coaching front or any other for that matter. I would have preferred to bring D'antoni to continue to run that 7 second offense.

Good pick up as an assistant. Tough, defensive minded. Latest reports have team trying to fill remaining two spots with Lawrence Frank, Sam Cassell or possibly Larry Drew.

No big deal but whichever mod deleted the thread I made first instead of merging, that's not site protocol. If you need help merging next time, private message me.

A coaching staff of Doc, Woodson, Frank, Cassell and Drew would be just fine with me.

It was me, mate. I just did a straight-up merge, I didn't delete anything. Your OP about it being a good hire is still in here. I only say that because I remember that mine was the first reply, then I noticed the other thread already existed, so I merged them.

I hate the pickup of Woodson, he is not a good coach and i don't know why everyone says he is a good D coach. He has fooled everyone by his piss poor offense game which naturally slowed the game down and helped his D stats. Chandler complained about his idiot scheme of wanting to switch on everything keeping the bigs out of position for rebounds and protecting the rim.

What is there to work out with Washington to hire cassell as an assistant? Compensation? For an assistant? Did we get anything for Gentry or lue? No and they were under contract. Unbelievable. I feel like we get taken advantage of in these kinds or situations - and like how our trades are always fair and other people give up nothing for something it seems

My favorite Clipper of all time along with Griffin. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE this so much. Imagine him winning a ring with this team as a coach? Ever since he left, he said he follows the Clippers and roots for them. Last year he brought John Wall to watch Chris Paul's games in the playoffs, to teach him composure, leadership etc. How cool is that? He would be a fantastic assistant. Too bad nobody remains on the team that he played with.

Repped High Quality Post

One of my pet peeves on forums is when someone rips a coach or player without having much information on the situation. Mike Woodson has always been known as a solid coach. The issue in New York was the garbage he had to work with. He coached a bunch of me first hot heads who didn't give a rats ass about playing as a team. He also worked in a largely incompetent front office. I've talked to many Hawks/Knicks fans and done my own research and the overall review has been positive. Basically he's a great assistant caliber coach and OKAY head coach. Good with players, smart defensive coach, likable, passionate and hard working.

Stop bashing the guy... as Agent said he's a freaking assistant. If he was hired as the head coach, I'd complain but he wasn't. He's not going to be calling the shots. He's here to help coordinate the defense and boost the moral of players pretty much, which he's more than capable of.

Remember two years ago when our top assistant coaches were Robert Pack and Bob Ociepka? Yikes!

I think Mike Woodson will be great for us. His deficiencies like drawing up plays after timeouts will be non-existent because that's what Doc does best.

Also if we can add Sam I Am, we will have a great players coach that can relate to our guys.

Also, maybe in 10 years if Doc wants to call it quits we can name Cassell our head coach. Wouldn't that be incredible?

I'm all for Doc grooming Cassell into that role. Although we seem to be a freaking farm team with other teams stealing our coaches/front office guys in recent years, so I doubt Cassell would stick around long enough. We groom our personnel for other teams haha. I want Doc to coach here AT LEAST 5 years, hopefully longer. This franchise needs some stability for once. DJ is the longest tenured Clipper and outside of Sacks/Severns the entire front office and coaching staff are new too.

PS. At first when you said Sam I Am I was thinking of the forum poster Clippersam and thought you were mentioning him because he only posts to complain about coaches. I thought he would return for this thread hahaha.

I ma Sorry that Woodson sucks. His stats from Atlanta was a slow paced team with low scoring games which naturally helped his defensive rating. Stop recycling the old sorry coaches. Doc did good with fresh coaches and ideas in Boston now he is starting to fall in the trap of getting veteran everything. Old veteran players old worn out stuck in their ways coaches.

The grammar in this makes it really hard to read and understand. That being said I laugh at the "his stats from Atlanta" as if the coach controls the stats his players produce. Tempo has nothing to do with defensive efficiency SMH. You can be a fast team and play elite D.

Woodson is just a yes man so i aspect him to do very well here because it's obvious that is what Doc wants him for. It's sure not for his Princeton or Triangle type of offense being that he is a 1on1 for every play type of coach, and it's damn sure not for his ability to direct or correct players in game time situations.

Atlanta's DRTG with Woodson:

09-10: 13th Drtg / 27th pace

08-09: 12th Drtg / 24th pace

07-08: 18th Drtg / 18th Pace

06-07: 23rd Drtg / 24th pace

05-06: 27th Drtg / 17th pace

04-05: 29th Drtg / 13th pace

New York:

11-12 (assistant for 42 games): 5th in Drtg

12-13: 18th in Drtg

13-14: 24th in Drtg

What Woodson actually did well in Atlanta was regular season offense. Contrary to what most people would think, the slow paced, mistake free isolation offense actually allowed them to be good offensively because they didn't turn the ball over. For defense they really just got better defensive players. Antoin Walker played 40 MPG for 50+ games in 04-05 and Al Harrington played the most minutes on the team. More importantly, Zaza Pachulia a non rim protector / shot blocker was their starting C until 07-08 when he was replaced by Horford and played 15.2 MPG off the bench. It was no coincidence that moving forward with Zaza Pachulia playing a smaller role, their defense got better. He's a nice backup, but he's not a defensive anchor.

Back to the offense, looking at 09-10, they were 27th in pace but 13th in PPG, so that immediately tells us there's offensive efficiency happening. They were #1 in TOV%, so they didn't turn it over, #5 in ORB%, so crashed the glass well, and 11th in eFG%, so they actually made their shots quite well. The only thing they didn't really do well was get to the line as they were 23rd in FT/FGA. They had the #2 ORtg in the league. 08-09 was similar and different, 9th in Ortg this time while being 24th in pace. 9th in eFG%, 6th in TOV%, 13th in FT/FGA, and 19th in ORB%, so the next season they got better on the offensive glass but draw less fouls.

This was all in contrast to 07-08 when they played a little faster, but were sloppy. 18th in pace, but 24th in TOV%, 21st in eFG%, and while they were 4th in ORB% and 6th in FT/FGA, that meant a 16th ranked team in Ortg.

The 54 win Knicks of 12-13 were a similar case. 26th in pace but scoring 100 PPG (11th) because of efficiency #1 in TOV%, 8th in eFG%. The great eFG% was due to being #1 in 3PTM and #5 in 3PT%. Take care of the ball and make shots (duh), and you'll be a good offensive team, at least in the regular season, and a more deliberate slow paced offense with the right type of players heading it can lead to that. Knicks had Kidd as the starting PG to calm things down, and then a high level isolation player in Carmelo along with very good 3PT shooters.

I don't see Woodson as defensive coach though. New York had the one outlier year, but they did also have more healthy defensive guys.

Chandler 62/66 games - 33.2 MPG

Fields 66/66 games - 28.7 MPG

Shumpert 59/66 games - 28.9 MPG

and Lin isn't a bad defender himself, but he didn't play as much.

12-13 Chandler missed 20 games, Shumpert played 45/82, they traded Fields and J.R. Smith was the highest minute man for the team. They won 54 games, but they won on offense.

He seems like an okay assistant coach though, can't really say why Doc is getting him, so nothing to really judge. At the least another brain to give ideas.

Defensively, if Doc wants a defense coach, I would want the team to get Scott Skiles still.

Why do we need to give up squat for casell? Did we get anything for Lue it Gentry? That is absolute bs. No assistant is worth an asset, I get it if you want a head coach like rivers. But assistants generally are not held to their contracts. If DC demands compensation, I say pass. That is us getting taken advantage of
