Repped High Quality Post

I had to share this with you all. I came back from an event for season ticket holdersand after some basketball drills we had a question and answers session from one of the assistant coaches. I specifically asked him about Jared Dudleys progress. The coach said "Dudley had a bad year. His injury caused him to gain weight. But since the offseason he has lost weight. He's been at the practice facility twice a day and he looks amazing. " My second question was in regards to how we are going to solve our defensive woes. He responded " last year....

Thanks for the update on Dudley C4- exactly what I would have expected. He's gonna be night and day compared to last season. Probably right around 12pts per 30 minutes with his typical per of 15. I'm looking forward to it, especially since he's only $4mil! If he can start effectively like in Phoenix, WHAT A DEAL as compared to what other sf's have been signing for this off season.

Regarding CP, I hope nobody on the coaching staff believes that was all on him because it sure as hell wasn't. Refs blew more calls then CP did plays, so I think it falls on them more than Chris. CP should have WON the game with closing second free throws after Reggie Jackson ripped his elbow. Oh well, better he takes it too hard then not hard enough.

no prob. Dudleys update was great news. As for Chris I knew that comment was going to ruffle feathers. But again those were the assistant coach's words. Were the words hyperbole? Possibly, but I think its good for the staff to identify and voice these issues and work on them. The coach also expressed that Chris was well aware of his performance against OKC, and he himself was not happy with his performance. That being said I'm glad the coaches and players are taking accountability and working on correcting their performances. I think all these developments should be encouraging to us fans.

Thanks David. Oh, also the Q & A was done with Director of Player Development, Dave Severns. Everything that was discussed here on CTB such as Dudley, Chris Pauls performance against OKC in the playoffs, and our weakness on defense...all these issues that are kind of taboo to discuss but the coaches, at least Severns, was very open to discussing these issues and was candid about how he viewed them.

For those of you who are not STH's I strongly encourage it because the players and coaches can give you a great idea of what's going on.

He definitely stayed away from naming them, but if I had to guess those three there would probably be good candidates. Blake has almost every element of the game perfected: shooting, rebounding, passing, but is just missing lock down defense to be great. What an awesome player he could be

Yeah the thing that makes me feel great is that Severns didn't brush off the issues. He just acknowledged what things that were wrong, which many members on CTB also pointed out during the season as well, and said the coaching staff is aware of these and will work on them.

From last year when Doc took over look how great he fixed our 3 point defense despite not having a lock down defensive wing like Tony Allen. This could really be great for us

Sorry, but it was on CP3. He knew it, the coaches knew it, and even the players knew it. There was one bad call AFTER CP3 got cute with the ball in the final seconds of the game that called for running out the clock. Ad insult to injury, he fouled Westbrook on a hail mary three. It was all on him.

Thanks fightonron, glad Dudley is working on his game. Looking forward to a comeback year from him.

I think realistically we all kind of understood this about Dudley. It's hard to just start sucking in the NBA without some external factors. The coach basically confirmed what MunoValente has also said. Tendonitis, cure is rest which means less practicing and less working out. You just can't do the same amount of work if you're just doing stuff without knee impact. Less activity + same calorie intake for an NBA player equals weight gain for most people. I mean even John Wall was chunky coming back from injury. So barring injury, Dudley should be better, which is probably why Doc is doing a wait and see as Dudley when playing his best still has abilities that would be helpful.

Byron Mullens, Antawn Jamison and Stephen Jackson.

J/k. Bullock is possible just because he might not have gotten it. The guy suffering with injury all year, Dudley might make sense, though he said "didn't buy in", not that the player just couldn't do it. Seems like Blake was in on the defense. Maybe Jamal, maybe Davis. But what's more important is that everyone buys in and less about who wasn't buying in as much as they should have last season.

The calls wouldn't need to have been blown if Paul didn't do crazy stuff. Honestly it is a great learning experience for him. The first thing I said when he did it was "he never gets that call anyways", and later he ended up saying "I never get that call anyways, so I don't even know why I did it". Some learn by experience and you're never too old to learn (and he isn't even old). Yes we still got screwed after, but CP caused the first problem by trying to be too smart and the other problems were just after the fact.

Now in terms of the series, who knows, but it would be hard for OKC to beat us two games in a row, but not impossible either, but certainly would have magnified the chances of winning.

Who didn't buy in defensively?

Jamal, clearly. He's never bought in to defense of any sort.

I doubt is was Bullock. Rookies, particularly those on the bubble of keeping their jobs, always buy in. Besides, he didn't play enough to be an issue that a coach would think about. Big Baby played for Doc in Boston, so if Doc had issues with him buying in to what they were doing, he wouldn't have brought him here.

I thought Blake Griffin improved quite a bit defensively last season. His rotations were usually pretty good. He'll never be a shot blocker, but neither was Karl Malone. He'll take his charges though and add to the team defense.

Dudley fell out of favor. Obviously, there were other issues, but he came from a program that didn't defend much and he lost his minutes. I would say he's the second.

The third, while it could be Blake, I don't think so. I'm just not sure who else it would be. JJ isn't a great defender, but he does work at it and he clearly bought in. CP3 is a great defender when he locks in. At other times he can gamble a bit too much, putting pressure on the back line.

I can't imagine he was talking about Mullins or anyone else who isn't here now.

Okay, that leaves Crawford, Dudley and Blake then.

Dudley was hurt and/or out of shape basically the whole season, Barnes might actually be a better possibility; as much Dudley was struggling he held his starting job for a long time and even around the time Doc switched the line up he was little critical of Barnes' play at the time; Barnes definitely has better tools than Dudley defensively but if you look at our on/off defense numbers last year, we actually performed better defensively with Dudley on the court (overall we did better with Barnes, our offense did really well when he played).

By on/off defense numbers last year, our worst defenders where Crawford, Barnes, Collison and Glen Davis (and Mullens was epically bad, but he wasn't around long), all of which are very believable.

I def don't think he would put "Blake" as a person who didn't buy in. My guess would be Collison, Jamal, and Barnes... Although Barnes didn't look too bad other than looking older and slower.

Doc went out of his way several times to say that jamal had bought in defensively. Said something about him while not being a good individual defender but they weren't asking him to lock his man up but to be a good team defender and that more often than not jamal was usually where he was supposed to be.

People need to stop thinking individually because that is not what Docs defensively philosophy has been and he is said that from day one

Chris Paul is a high character guy who will ALWAYS step to the plate to take responsibility even if it isn't his to take. That's who he is. I'm curious who you're specifically referring to when you say the coaches and players knew it was Paul's fault, since Doc very loudly blamed the refs right after the game and eventually got fined. What you describe as CP3 getting "cute with the ball" was nothing more than an extremely lucky strip by Russell Westbrook. That he didn't manage to blatantly foul Paul on that play was an act of God. Hardly looks bad on CP when he's done that (admittedly pointless) move hundreds or even thousands of times without once being stripped.

The missed last second Reggie Jackson elbow swipe was bad, but the blown out of bounds call was all-time. Paul should have never had a chance to foul Westbrook on that ridiculous 3pt attempt if the Clippers had been awarded the ball as they should have.

To me, it just seems sort of strange for a Clippers fan to blame CP3 for the loss instead of blaming ref Tony Brothers for what was obviously a rigged game. Why did Doc Rivers as well as tons of unbiased journalists cry foul? Tony Brothers and KD's Mom hugging and laughing during the game didn't help the NBA's case. And Brothers inexplicably lied about the camera angles that had been made available to he and his crew for reviewing the out of bounds call- Brothers himself is clearly seen on camera watching all of the same replays as the fans in the stadium. It was the eleventh Thunder win in a row with Tony Brothers officiating...The Clippers won game 5.
