My whole thought process after Brand left was that, if the Clippers can offer Josh Smith a dollar amount that's JUST outside the Hawks budget, the Hawks won't be able to match. The reason i figure that is because you need to take a look at who else they have to pay, including: Bibby, J.Johnson, and Horford.

However it doesn't look like J.Smith is going anywhere, at least not this season. Either hawks will one-up with a 6-yr offer or Smith will decide to stay.

Personally i think Okafor is only worth 8-9 Million but according to this article : http://realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/ ... _a_season/

...Clippers are going to have to pay 10 million a year in order to put the deal out of reach for the Bobcats. !0 million is overpaying Okafor, but not too much, I think i can live with 10... but can the rest of clipperland?

that is way off, Clippers have more than 10 mil to spend and Okafor would not take 10 mil anyways...Clippers have atleast 12 mil to spend on a Free Agent and some accounts say up to 16 mil if they renounce Ross, Fazekas, etc

really? "way off"? i never implied that 10 million is all the clippers have. I'm saying they need to offer AT LEAST 10 to make it out of the Bobcats price range. If Okafor accpets 10 a year, we'll still have 6 million bucks of salara cap to work with as you pointed out.

Not Okafur. Josh is trying to deal. The hawks wont touch an 11 million dollar deal. They have bibby at like 14 or something. Horford to sign next year. they have to many players to worry about. Plus they are not a big market so they cant afford to hit luxury tax standards.

Okafor for $10M? I would applaud the FO because that would leave enough to provide depth for the bench. I see him coming back to the Cats though for no less than $12M. I would not mind if they proved me wrong.

I think Charlotte and Atlanta wouldnt match offers of 12 or more.. They have never had payrolls that high. I think Charlotte might let Okafor go since they have other PF's. Atlanta cant afford Smith and Childress so one is to be had.. I think Clippers can get one or the other but might have to do a sign and trade and give up a draft pick to Charlotte or ATL

Well, if they match Okafor, maybe go after these other Charlotte PF's of which you speak (but not May, he's woefully injury prone).

I would go 11-14 Mil for Josh Smith. But Okafor and Biedrins are 8-10Mil players in my eyes. If we have to overpay, I would take a pass and sign a veteran like Kurt Thomas (or somebody) to come in for just two years. We could use all the extra money to sign other players who can shoot and make our team really deep. Then in two years, the contract for the veteran PF comes off the books along with 16Mil for Cat and Tim Thomas comes off as well. So we can make ourselves stronger right now with shooters and top of the line 6th men, so to speak, and then make ourselves strong once again after two seasons. Just look at the free agent list in two years and that will make you drool. LeBron James tops the list.

Ideally, Beidrens/Okafor/Smith are $10M guys. Before the end of the season, I would have thought $11M might be an expensive gamble on Smith, but it seems that's where the bidding starts just to have a chance at him. Kurt Thomas would be en excellent band-aid: veteren, plays defense, can pop the mid-range, and he might possibly take the MLE for two years (lots of cap space coming in). Lebron wants either NY, Brooklyn or CLE. But there are other FA's on that list, and you never know who might be available for trade.

what if we front load a deal to smith at around 13 mil 5yrs....have it ending at 11 or so....that would be 5 yrs $60 mil total and could possibly be out of ATL's reach....same would probably have to go for okafor....

Okafor turned down $13 mil this year so I would expect that he wants more than that and a long term deal. Plus, Andrew Bogut got over $14 mil per season so I would think that it would take at least $15 mil to get him to sign. And I'm pretty sure the Bobcats will match the $15 mil anyway. The Clippers need to get smart and understand that it isn't worth their time if they are going to make pitiful offers to restricted free agents. They should just pursue trades if that's their intent.

What sucks is that we're in a situation where we have a ton of young talent, but a PG in his prime. Therefore, if we wait for the young talent to develop and then go after a big time FA in the near future, our PG will no longer be in his prime. However, if we spend a lot of money now, we might be wasting money on somebody that's not worth it and missing out on the FA's of the future. It's literally a catch-22.

I think the best bet is to go after someone now, because we can't wait too long when we have BD who is ready to win. And I think Josh Smith is the best person.

    - He is safer bet than Biedrins and Okafor. Biedrins is still raw and we don't know how he will develop. Okafor has injury history, problems switching over to the 4, and a suspect offensive game.

    - Josh Smith has dramatically improved his game every season, including last season where he put up better numbers than Elton Brand while being significantly younger.
    - He can play now and later. He is still young and hasn't even peaked, yet he is playing at a competitive level so we don't have to wait around for him.
    - He's a Baron Davis type player. He runs the court and can shoot outside, thus spreading the floor.
    - He already has playoff experience where he significantly contributed and almost helped defeat the World Champions.

Josh Smith is not only the safest pick, but also the better pick. With him and Al Thornton on the wings, and Kaman at the center add that to the formidable backcourt of B Diddy and E Giddy (my failed attempt at giving Eric Gordon a nickname), and we have a scary team. Reminds me a lot of the Hornets, very unconventional, but can work.

well front load a deal at $14-16 mil to start....atl owners dont have a big enough fan base to sign smith at that amount....they'd end up being over the cap which would cost them MORE money!...simply put smith CAN be stolen....and front loading a deal helps us steal him now and not kill ourselves later....

The only problem about Josh is that I think he wants to remain with the Hawks though I'm not definite on that.

I don't think that there is any way that the Clippers can get Smith for less than 14 mil a year to start. Even Dunleavy said yesterday that the Clippers will have to look at ways (like frontloading contracts) to be able to sign a player like SMith or Okafor. Even if they started year 1 at 16 mil but decreased by 5% every year that would make sense and might be too much for Atlanta since they are already at about 48 mil (not counting smith's current salary).

WHat I don't understand is that if there is no penalty for going above the salary cap of 58.6 mil per year until you reach the luxury cap threshold of 71.6 mil, why can't the Clippers spend a little extra? I know that Sterling would NEVER field a roster over the luxury tax threshold but why can't he at least get to 68-69 million (which would not incur any luxury taxes?) THe Clippers are in a top market and the attendance would be close to a sell-out if the Clippers could put together a top team.

What the F were the Clippers thinking today about potentially trading for Zach Randolph???THankfully the Knicks wanted no part of that deal. If the Clippers would have done that then forget about Smith Okafor Biedrins, etc. Zach Randolph has been a notorious team cancer, I don't get that one.

THat really scares me...DOes that mean that the Clippers #1 target was Randolph>???

Well I guess it was quoted from a while ago but he's gone on the record saying he would like to return to the Hawks....though we've heard something to this extent before Wink

Maybe they wanted to see if it was possible. Like just proposing to see what the Knicks thought but yeah I'm glad the Knicks turned it down as well. We don't need someone like him.

They could have offered Okafor 18 million a year and he would have still turned it down, simply because he doesnt want to be a Bobcat anymore.

I think its about time we offered Smith and Okafor SOMETHING. The worst thing in the world at this point is not being able to sign either one... that would be the WORST.
