Doesn't it seem odd that the same day that the Clippers make a trade for Marcus Camby, reports of a continuing fued between Josh Smith and Coach Woodson surface along with the revelation that Smith will not resign with Atlanta if Woodson is the Coach. Duh! Add to that the fact that Atlanta will not offer Smith as much as the Clippers. Will Atlanta can fire their coach just because one of their players requested it and then make Josh a bigger offer? Not likely. The solution? Trade Josh Smith to the Clippers for Marcus Camby in a sign and trade deal. I smell another trade. If not Josh could sign a one year deal and then become an unrestriced FA next summer. Atlanta could lose him one way or the other. If a trade happens, it can't happen for 29 more days because of NBA rules. They could agree to a deal and complete it later, but a month is an eternity in the NBA.

Sports Illustrated Article. I was totally unaware of all the bad blood between Josh and the Coach or his statement that wouldn't return if Woodson was the coach. And then they signed the Coach to an extension. Yikes! The juicy stuff is half way down the article.

Here is my conspiracy theory. A week ago the first player the Clippers met with after EB bails was Josh Smith. They wine and dine the guy along with his agent. Then, they do not meet with any other players. Then they don't make Josh an offer. Then they make a trade offer to bring in Zach Rancolph. That fails. Then they trade to bring in Marcus Camby. Then we immediately see publicity of Josh's unhappiness with Atlanta's offer and his demand not to play for the existing coach that they just extended. Could it be that during the Clippers meeting with Josh, they all figured out that if they simply made an offer to Josh that Atlanta would then match, he would then be stuck playing with Atlanta long term. So, they devised a plan for the Clippers to bring in a player that could be used as trade bait in a sign and trade deal with Atlanta. That way if Atlanta is going to lose Josh Smith anyway, they will at least get something in return. If my conspiracy theory is correct, Josh Smith's next move will be a trade demand. Ooooohhhhh!

i personally like keeping camby. josh smith really isnt a power forward, hes undersized. kaman and camby together gives us a combination that can match up with the likes of shaq and amare, pau and bynum, JO and bosh...no way smith could do that with kaman, especially in a western conference overflowing with big men. cambys aging, but it hasnt affected his play. and this is better for our future anyway, seeing as hes gone in 2 years and opens up some space to go for a player better than josh smith.

I think I also like the Camby move because we will have 26 mil to throw at someone. Maybe even two players. We will still have Kaman, Davis, Gordon, and Thornton. Those are some good players to surround around another good player. Instead of waiting 29 days we may have to wait just under two years!!!!

Your right, this is all speculation. It's a conspiracy therory. But sometimes 2+2 does equal 4. And you must admit, the events of the last 7 days are pretty strange, even for the Clippers. If Josh doesn't make a trade demand then I will crush my crystal ball.

The only balls I have aren't crystal, B.
I'm obviously not good at predicting the future because I posted how sure I was we couldn't get Camby. I really thought Denver wouldn't give him up cheap. I was gladly proven wrong when we got him for a conditional second-rounder.
Will we trade him for Josh Smith? I would hope not, at least not before seeing how Kaman/Camb work together. That really sounds like a good combination for the next two years, one that should give pause to Bynum/Gasol (assuming Bynum heals properly, and Camby stays healthy of course).
Earlier I discounted how people were dissapointed about not going after Smith. I even insulted a fellow Clipper citizen (I apologize Bingo, it was uncalled for). But I am really excited about Camby on this roster, especially when we almost ended up with Zach Randolph. Except for scoring, he does all the things Brand does or does them better (rebounding, blocks, passing). He finally gets to play his natural PF position, and we get to see how well he does with a PG like Baron.
The best part is it's only two years. He is the best possible band-aid, given our current situation. We could have lots of cap in 2010.
Getting someone like Smith would hamper the financial flexibility of this team. Don't need a crystal ball on that one, it's just a fact. He would be making a starting salary of at least $10M a year and he would have to be the kind of player that lifts us into The Next Level for that kind of contract. (does Camby do this for us? Maybe; Nuggets fans certainly think losing him brings them down a level).
After seeing him in the playoffs against the Celtics, I just don't get that difference-maker vibe from Josh Smith, but maybe he just needs a fresh change (that old cliche). And does it bother anybody that he is something of a malcontent, giving an ultimatum to management to get either himself or the newley extended Woodsen out of ATL? Do we really want to bring in Smith in the same manner that Brand left (planning behind management's back?) If so, then good move. It shows the team can and will do what it takes to put together a winner. I just happen to think we have a winner right now. |

Point well taken and noted JM. I agree with you. I prefer the flexibility, and we can really makes things happen with this team the way it is. We have to finish putting the roster together. Some final touches. The major pieces are there. We NEED to stay healthy and play as a team. No selfish play. If all those things happen we will make the playoffs. As a side note, if we can get back in the playoffs, hopefully we see the Lakers. It would be a great series.

Camby is definitely the safer bet. Still, Baron Davis isn't getting any younger, two years from now, who knows what condition he'll be in

It's all good Journeymen. No hard feelings. The important thing is that the Clippers get the right guy at the right price and to preserve the possibilities for the future. My rationale behind the Smith aqcuisition was that I wanted to see a young guy grow with Baron and the CLippers' other young talent...But after really thinking about it I see that it makes sense to bring in a veteran like Camby even if he is only going to be a rent a vet for 2 years. I don't want to enter into this speculation of a sign and trade (as tempting as it is) because that will make this Summer drag on and on and on....I'm happy that we've replaced Felton with another solid veteran although maybe a little disappointed that it's unlikely we'll be able to bring in a guy like SMith Okafor or Iguodala. My only fear is that with Baron's PRIMETIME years right in front of us, two years from now might be the beginning of BAron's decline in production. I hope I'm wrong about that though. If something indeed does happen, I just hope that we get a guy that WANTS to be a Clipper!!!

Someone on another thread had a great point that we could get Vince Carter with Cat and TT's contracts. It makes sense for both teams, the Nets want nothing but cap space in 2010

We have enough experience in the starting lineup. We need a guy to come off the bench. Vince wont be that guy. Vince's best years are way behind him. He's not the high flier he used to be. There has to be another SG out there that can be a contributor off the bench. If we could get rid of Mobley for Ben Gordon in a sign and trade, that would be a good deal. No mo Vince!!! Or bring back Matt Barnes. He was here once. There has to be a guy that can help spark the bench. We need a spark plug.

still being able to get josh smith
not sure if this is true but i got it off dime mag but if it is this would be great
...................................................................... ...................................................................... ....................The Hawks faithful are cheering this morning as Marcus Camby heads to the Clippers, possibly filling the void that was slated for Josh Smith. But they shouldn’t get ahead of themselves. First of all, even with Camby’s $8 million and Baron Davis‘ $11 million (about) next season, the Clippers still have enough room to get J-Smoove on board for slightly more than the five-year, $45 million offer he turned down from Atlanta last summer.
Now that we’ve burst that bubble, get ready for a bombshell. Even if the Hawks can bring a bit more cake to the party than some other suitors, (Clippers, Grizzlies) Smith is reportedly refusing to play for Mike Woodson.
League sources say Smith is not interested in returning to the Hawks if Mike Woodson, who just signed a new two-year contract to remain with Atlanta, is the head coach. The two have butted heads frequently in Smith’s four seasons with the Hawks, and sources say the relationship is beyond repair. With a dearth of offers, Smith may change his tune but having a volatile relationship on such a young team may not be in the Hawks’ best interests.
Maybe the Camby trade was a way for Mike Dunleavy & Co. to fortify their sales pitch to Smith. Even if he’s going to chew up a serious portion of Smith’s “megadeal,” he’ll help to make the Clippers serious contenders.
On their call this morning, maybe Mike Dunleavy can start by asking, “So Josh, what do you think about being part of one of the greatest shotblocking tandems of all time?” |
