Josh Childress just got 20 Mil in Greece to play for 3 years. That's a better offer than anybody would have given him in the NBA, especially for a bench warmer who one scout said is a good 6th man who is not particularly special at anything. Trust me, agents and players are paying attention to this more than fans. I don't know if it's because the economy in Europe is just better than it is over here, or because the American dollar is worthless, or if it's because the of the salary cap. But commisioner Stern is getting critizism for putting the teams and the players in a situation where some of our best players could be raided by European teams. Kings James to Russia. Amare Stoudamire to Italy. Dewayne Wade to France. I guess it could happen.

I doubt if Childress can fit well in the Europe style...It's too much money for one player in Europe and he will be suposed to dominate the competition. He'll have a lot of pressure and I doubt if he can be succesful overseas because he isn't enough mature as a player.

Sincerelly I'm very surprised that a young player with his potential could leave from the NBA...But there are many players overpayed playing in NBA and many teams that don't want to pay more money because of the luxury tax.

I'm a little surprised with all the money some teams are investing in basketball in Europe when the most popular sport by far is the soccer...

Wasn't Chris Webber offered something like this as well a few years ago, I'm starting to understand this, just based on how we get international players, they too should at least be allowed to offer someone from the NBA a contract.

I think it's a great development. The NBA has to compete for players! The only downside is it may cause Stern to relent on the hard-nosed rookie contract structures. This whole RFA constraint is finally beginning to have a strong impact. The union may want to renegotiate the CBA and Stern may give in to protect the NBA's dominance.

I like it the way it is now. Just look how a team like the Clippers held so much power in their hands in this process! It's good for parity.

Hey Miquel ... this IS becoming like soccer (apologies, I should call it football, right?). Anyway, Brazilian football players play in Portugal, Portuguese in England, English in America. Basketball is becoming an international sport in every aspect now too. Love it!

20M for 3 years for Childress? If he is expected to dominate in that league, I question how competitive it is.

I am wondering about the comp level over there. Usually when our guys go over there they are not guaranteed a spot on a roster here. Now its a little different when you have to over and show that you worth more than players who already established making less. Do you think the teams there are hoping to get a wider fan base by luring our players over there.

Do not panic!!The German basketball teams are really bad. This is one of the countries where the basketball neither is the second nation sport behind the soccer (what we call in Europe: football)...I mean in Germany there's no any strong team with money.

Crazy moves like the Childress one can only be made in Greece (Olympiakos, Panathinaikos) or Russia (Khimki, CSKA,Dynamo Moscow).

Anyways if you have many money but you don't know how to invest it then it can become into a disaster as I think will happen with some of these teams...

Look at the ex-clipper players. Like Željko Rebrača hes playing for Pamesa Valencia. And James Singleton hes playing for TAU Cerámica. And Daniel Ewing he signed with Russian Khimki BC.

the bigger concern is the whole college game, with the one-n-done, more kids may want to forego college season and make money overseas....I know that's what I would do, if I had the talent

Yeah. Rebraca came to Spain but his heart problems forced him to retire...Singleton dissapointed me a little bit because he was just a bench player playing for Tau and about Daniel Ewing I don't know if he has been fired from Khimki with all the new players they have signed (Delfino).

The most succesful former Clipper player in Spain has been Boniface N'Dong who plays for Unicaja and has had some really nice games. You would be surprised about his improvements

    ^^Is Boniface still in Europe?

Apparently Brandon Jennings, whom some say is the top high school player, has signed with a team in Italy instead of going to Arizona. The NBA has been put on notice!

Yeah thats insane. I guess the deciding factor for him was he did not get the required test scores, so he bolted.

I'm glad Childress got his contract. He desrves Mike Miller money, which is what he is getting (but for less years) in Greece. There were no teams with cap room this off-season that was looking to spend, and Atlanta would not negotiate or even discuss a S&T. This looks to be like bad management on Atlanta's part because now they get nothing for him. There will probably be some Free-Agency rule changes that give an edge back to NBA teams against international teams. But either way I can't picture an NBA exodus of stars anytime soon.

Just a note, Childress can opt out after any season and come back to the NBA...

I've always thought that high schoolers that are forced to spend 1 year in college should just take a 1 year deal in Europe and get paid. It's only a matter of time for this to happen and the NBA will have to re-think it's eligibility rules. If they make it such that players need to spend 2 years in college, look for many to move to Europe.

GOOD JOB JOSH! Ok... i would rather play for Europe ANY DAY over the NBA. The NBA has very little loyalty to it's players and is all about the money and the me first bull**** style players. In Europe the people are nicer to players, the game is more of a team game, and if the money (as in this deal) is as competitive Europe is the better choice. Josh was treated like crap. He deserved to be starting at times as he was a great all around player.. They didn't give a fair offer.. barely over mid level for maybe the best sixth man... is pretty weak.

Also good for Europe jacking our players. I'm an American but i will admit our athletes need to be humbled.. thank god we got our as*es spanked in 2004 olympics, maybe now we will respect other countries more?
