I recently posted that somehow the Clippers need to somehow manage to draft at 14 the player who is going to become the next Kevin Durant, who looks like he will be drafted either 1 or 2. So how do we accomplish such a feat. The answer is to have a player that should have gone much higher than 14 drop into their laps like Corey Brewer or Acie Law. Another stategy is to find a diamond in the rough who is supposed to go somewhere around 14, but is a sleeper. Thaddeus Young, who has unlimited athletic potential might be an example of such a player. The final way to find such a player is to find a guy who is flying under the radar. I think such a guy could be Rudy Fernandez. Only one mock drart has him going as high as 14 to the Clips and two mocks have him down in the second round. This is typical of Euro players. Scouts and mock drafts do not always know how to rate these guys sometimes. But the scouting reports say he is athletic with a good vertical leap, can drive the lane and split the defense, has a good handle and can really dribble the ball, and most importantly can hit the 3 with ease. He plays smart and makes good decisions. The reason I feel that he would make a good pick for the Clippers is that at 6' 5" he could play 3 positions. He has a long wingspan for his size and rebounds well for a backcourt guy. But a great shooter who can play SF, SG, or PG is great asset to have. He might not be able to play PG for the Suns, but the Clippers do not have a run and gun style. Rudy will not ever become Durant because he has a smaller frame and Durant is like 5 inches taller. So it is hard to compare them. But Rudy could just be what the doctor ordered for the Clips.

Yeah Rudy would be a great pick- the Clippers can really benefit having a guy like him. We need a guy like him who's proven, can shoot the 3 and isn't afraid to dunk in your face. Asides from being a little too skinny (which probably won't be a big issue), the biggest question is if he's going to come over when drafted. Since his buyout is $1.6 million, even if the Clippers pay $500K of that (the most they can contribute) he still needs to fork over $1.1 mil, which would eat up like 80% of his first year NBA salary. What could happen if the Clippers are able to pick him is to have him stay in Europe one more year and then come over next year. That would make a great insurance policy if Maggette leaves. Though ideally you want to come over this year and help out right away.

Would Rudy then make Guillermo Diaz superfluous?

I read somewhere that Guillermo is going to play on the Clipper summer league team, so we'll see how that works out. He's a smaller player, a combo PG/SG type, while Fernandez is a SG and can probably play a little SF and PG.

It'll be interesting- I'm sure that Clippers.com will be posting results of individual workouts in the coming weeks leading up to the draft, which will be held on June 28 I believe.

Yeah, I hear that Baby Shaq is coming for the summer league as well as Guillermo.

What I like about that is that both Guillermo and Rudy are athletic players, and NBA teams are now all becoming more athletic. Otherwise you just can't match up Even Baby Shaq is athletic for a guy his size. I was shocked during the World Championships last summer watching him play. Move over Kaman, somebody is looking over your back. Soon websites will be posting who the Clippers are working out. But they just might try to fake people out by not working out a Euro player that they are interested in. They might have already quietly, silently, scouted him, or worked him out a couple of months ago, and not tip their hand to other teams by bringinn him in over the next month.

Clipperfan, I think you meant Corey Brewer. The consensus mock draft has Brewer at 7 and Acie Law at 12, So law is more likely to be available. The Clippers need help now, so I do not think they will go for another Euro player unless getting him here is a slam dunk. On clippers.com, a Clipper employee interviewed Baylor and personel managers (he he, they are interviewing themselvers) and Baylor made the comment that if Guillermo Diaz plays in summer league like he did overseas last year he will be in a Clipper uniform next year.....

I'm gonna say you one thing...Only review BabyShaq stats this year.He has had a disspointing season after playing a good WorldChamp and he has been out of shape the whole season. More things: this summer the Euros play the European Championship so I guess that Sofo could be playing for the Greek team instead of playing training camp...I don't know if the dates are the same but there's a possibility...

Wow!I see that I've convinced you about Rudy...Let's see if Dunleavy takes note...Anyways my team for the next year is still: Casselmania,Rudy,Corey,EB and Kaman...I still believe in Kaman and I think that next year he will surprise everybody

I think I'll reserve my judgment on Baby Shaq & Diaz once they start playing summer league. Hopefully Baby Shaq can avoid any schedule conflict with his national team and show us what he's got lately.

I agree with Miquel about Kaman. There's no reason why he can't be a Tim Duncan-like player. I think he is capable of being a 80% Tim Duncan. He just needs to work hard this summer, and seems like he's determined to do so.

In fact if you look at our team they're not too different from the Spurs potentially. Kaman/Brand can be Tim Duncan, Q Ross is like a Bruce Bowen, Cat is like Michael Finley, Maggette (and potentially Rudy) is like Manu Ginobiilli, and Thomas is like be a Robert Horry. The only glaring difference is that the Clippers don't have anybody like Tony Parker, though we do have Sam.

Love reading the positive passion towards our favorite team. If Elgin wants Diaz on the team if he plays well in the summer, I think he'll be a Clipper. We could nickname him Guillermo "The Firestarter" Diaz. Hey wasnt the actor who played Scarface on Half Baked named Guillermo Diaz? I think so, hehe. I believe we NEED to give Diaz and Baby Shaq opportunities to win jobs based on their summer play.

I have a question: Do you think we could trade Ewing, our 2nd round pick this year and our 1st round pick next year for a first rounder this year? I really hope we dont draft Thaddeus Young. I'd definitely wait one more draft before taking a frontcourt guy. I think we are set there for a little while yet. It's gotta be a guard this year. With Rudy and The Firestarter launching threes and exploding to the hoop (and playing while the other isnt) imagine the damage they could do as well as make life for Elton Brand and Chris Kaman better down low. I also have come to the conclusion that if we dont draft a PG, we should sign Hart for 1 year. We'll know whether he's worth keeping after that year. And if Livi's not ready right away, we can begin without missing a beat. Diaz may be good in doses, but I doubt he's ready for a starting role.

What I am looking forward to next year is improving our bench. I think we have a competent starting five, but our bench was thin last year (many 4th quarter metldowns due to fatigue).

Assuming Q and Corey get the start, the bench that could include Mobley, Thomas, Baby Shaq, either Hart/Cassell, Diaz and whoever we draft. That's a very solid bench at every position, at least a 9-deep team. That's what it takes to stay in in all year.

Singleton, Ewing and Paul Davis represent the younger, inexperienced part of the bench, with an opportunity to step up with their production this year if Dunleavy lets them and considering they improve. I think Singleton's role on the team is perfect right now with brief spurts of playing time, unless he becomes a lot better...I just wish the coach used him every game instead of every now and then. Ewing needs to improve his offense to be productive on this team, otherwise he'll regress towards the very end of the bench. Paul Davis, we'll have to wait and see. His role could be upped if Aaron Williams goes down and we dont bring Sofo over.

Good point though Ether, we do have some solid starters. And our bench is a little weak, but nothing a little work cant improve. Bringing Mobley to the Bench and finding our goto guy at SG will really help. We could literaly turn into a hockey team with two "lines". We figure out our Guard situation and we could really bring the pain from our starting line and our first reserves line. Obviously we need to let Brand and Maggette play as much as possible without them fatiguing, but with one of our two stars out, we could definitely replace their production with some solid play by our bench.

You know, ether, you may have hit the nail on the head with your assessment there.

Thanks jlemmen. Sorry I forgot to mention Singleton. I always forget about him, but that's because DUNLEAVY ALWAYS FORGETS ABOUT HIM!!! I like James' game. The Staples crowd LOVES him. He may never be a star, but he has at least Mikki Moore-type potential. Could stick around as a contributor in the league for a long time and occasionally be "the man". Ergo, please hang on to him!

Hey do you guys think that Mike Dunleavy is a good coach?

Didn't Singleton have 10 boards in about 10 minutes or something ridiculous? Sure it won't happen all the time but this guy brings a lot of energy off the bench. "Jumpin" James got almost as many screams from the crowd as 50 or 42. When the guys start to fade maybe he can light a torch under their tushies. Baby Shaq ought to get a lot of thought. You guy's have a lot more faith in CK than I do. I have a problem with multimillion dollar underacheivers. Weren't many of CK's problems confidence? He needs A LOT of work. He has the frame to be pretty strong. One of Duncan's main weapons is that killer glass thing. CK has only his semi-sky hook. CK needs to add something else. Maybe some gym success will give him confidence and he can be more "Caimanesque" . Is Cat off the bench unanimous?

Well what do you guys think of Dunleavy as a coach?

I think the overall consensus in the NBA is that he's a good coach. He took the reigns a couple years ago and the Clippers improved every year until last season obviously. And hence there has been quite a few detractors. I do agree with his philosophy of focusing on defense, and his late season adjustment to increase ball movement was a great move.

Yeah I wish James played more too- we all know what he can do. Now it's up to him to work hard in the offseason and improve his game so we can get to see him more next season.

As for Kaman yeah he's definitely underachieved, but he has the quickness and the size to be a great inside player. It's all up to him now whether he wants to be to be the "killer Cayman"/80% Duncan Smile.

And yeah I agree that Cat would be better served playing fewer minutes overall- he said he didn't mind coming off of the bench. But it would take someone really good to convince Dunleavy to take those minutes away from him.

I still don't how many percentage of our success was part of Dunleavy's and how many was for Sam Cassell and Cat.They were who really changed the mind of the team in my opinion. We don't have players for playing a tough defense like San Antonia so maybe the coach would need to try to adapt his game plan to the players we really have...Furthermore he has had some stupid decisions that have dicreased the level of confidence toward him: I remember sitting Corey on the bench, not playing Singleton, draft an unknown player, even in Europe, like Korolev...these are some strange decisions

Yeah the consensus here about Mobley is pretty much on being our 6th man. But as David mentioned, it's gonna take someone else to step up into the starting role for Dunleavy to change it up. Dunleavy is a good coach, just with some questionable decisions. In the end its more about the Willie's and Joe's than the X's and O's anyways. I think this team has bought into Dunleavy's coaching philosophies, it's just we took a step back in order to re-align and improve the team. This year we all expect some big things, even in the off-season.
