Repped High Quality Post

It's been interesting reading the west coast blogs concerning your newest LAC, Al Thornton. I've kinda made the rounds of the Clipper blogs and there are various opinions out there, evidently a lot of them made without the benefit of ever actually seeing Thornton play. Some of you may not know exactly what you're getting. Living in Tallahassee (home of FSU) I got to see him play all four of his collegiate years. Of course no one knows exactly how a players college career will translate to the pro game. Certainly there are countless college stars that for whatever reason, just couldn't make it as pros. So, as much as I'd love to do it, I can't guarantee that Thornton will be a great pro. I can't tell you that. But, what I CAN tell you is that he is a high character guy, always an important thing, and that if he applies himself the same way in the Clippers system, and to "what it takes" in the pro game, that he did when he played here, he'll be someone that you will enjoy cheering for.

I've been in Tallahassee since '70, and I've never seen an FSU player improve so much over a career. Or work so hard doing it. Off the court Thornton actually WORKS on his game. On the court... hey on the court he is fun to watch because he's a high energy guy. He's after loose balls, and he gets tips and rebounds that will surprise you. He's got a sweet outside shot that he can get all day against single coverage. Then there's the twice or three times a game when he gives you the jaw dropping athletic move... the fast break or put back slams or the "where did he come from" blocked shots. He will be fun for you to watch.

The big knock on his game is the assist thing, which is true... ish. Yes he does need to improve his passing, especially out of the double team. But he was double teamed a lot, and triple teamed at times, things he won't see with anywhere near the same regularity in the bigs. And, truth is, FSU needed for him to score, pretty much desperately, so he probably looked to shoot in some of those situations more than he should have, again or more than he will for the Clips. So, if the coaching staff can improve that aspect of his play... all will be well.

Actually, his shooting range extended by about five feet or so each year. Last year he seemed very comfortable from the college version of three. From what I saw of the pre-draft workouts, he was already hitting pretty well from the NBA distance. He's made himself a good free throw shooter, and is absolutely fearless taking the ball to the basket. He made countless huge plays for FSU, and it wasn't always the big score. Sometimes it was a block, or the crucial rebound, or even a timely screen. He was a money player.

One final note. I will repeat that part about his being a high character guy. I can't imagine that you will ever have to worry about his work ethic, disruptive locker room talk, or brushes with the law. It seems odd to even mention that aspect of things, but unfortunately modern times have shown it to be a consideration. The bottom line is I am now a LAC fan, and the Clippers may have done better with their first round pick than even they knew.

HEY MAN!! Welcome to the boards!!!! And Thanks very much. I enjoyed reading your post!!

I wasnt sure what to think when they picked him. I didnt know much about Thornton, except that he was an animal last year in college and he was a forward. I thought "We dont need a forward, we need a guard". But after researching him a bit more and watching his oh-so-sweet jumper and his commanding presence, I think I and all the other Clippers fans will be loving this guy. This is by far the best draft I've seen since being a Clippers fan. I hope everything you say is true above. You are a very good writer and I could clearly get a picture of this guy playing well for us just from what you said.

Stick around throughout the season and we'll take you in with open arms. Us Clipper fans dont love the showy, flashy, popular parts of basketball that the Lakers represent. We love the hard-working, nose-clean, under-the-radar parts of basketball that embody the Clippers. The Franchise turned itself around a few years back and we're loving it. We got a taste of the playoffs in 05-06 and we are desperate for another taste. Welcome aboard and I hope you enjoy your experience because we'll enjoy your contributions.

Welcome to Clippers Topbuzz DWB! Wow that was a terrific scouting report on Al Thornton. It just makes us feel even better about the selection. Sounds like he is going to make those other teams regret passing on him. I can't wait to see him in action during the summer league!

Couldn't have said it better myself DWB! I absolutely LOVE Thornton and what he brings to the table both offensively and defensively. And don't forget that he was coached by Leonard Hamilton who teaches strong work ethic and positive workman like attitude and knows what it takes to win. Dunleavy was quoted as saying that the team had as many as 5 calls for Thornton once he slipped to 14.

I personally would like to see Thornton at the 3 and move Maggette back to the 2 (his natural position) and bring Mobley off the bench (assuming Dunleavy ever decides to actually use his bench). We just need a reliable 3 pt shooter (Mo Pete or Kapono) and an up-tempo PG who can push the ball and this team just became a little more athletic and very exciting to watch. I can't wait!

I finally realize the clippers have one of the many pieces they need to become a real contender now. At first I was disappointed with not picking Nick Young, but now...i see the versatility of Al Thornton and how he could emerge as a real true NBA gem. High Energy is his most favorable characteristic. We need that in able to finish through games b/c it seems we lack energy at the start of 2 halfs in games. Plus, when Livingston comes back, man imagine that??

Al Thornton is the new face of Clipper Nation...welcome! Show 'em what you got!

I saw Singleton released and questioned the decision. My impression is that Thornton is a similar player, but much better offensive skills minus TO and passing. The Clips need another offensive threat to spread the Defense. All-in-all a good move. Singleton will get a good job somewhere with more PT.

Thanks for the welcome! As you could probably tell, Thornton is a favorite of mine so sharing a little first hand insight was my pleasure. I look forward to participating in the Clippers/NBA discussions almost as much as I do watching this upcoming season, nothing like a lively debate and some shared ideas. And by the way… is it my imagination or do the addition of two transcendent types like Oden and Durrant, plus the seeming overall depth of draft, added to the trades already done, much less the Kobe/KG/JO’N/Phoenix pick’em potential moves make for one of the most exciting upcoming seasons in recent memory? Maybe it’s just me.

Ok, so I have a question… seeing as how I don’t get to view the Clippers very often, just how good is Livingston? I mean, sure I’ve known about him. The ACC connection made me aware of his being recruited by Duke, and then his passing them over for the pros. I’ve read about his potential, about how he’s supposed to have the court vision of Magic or Kidd, but I haven’t really seen it for myself. I heard that he was on quite a roll just before the tragic injury, kind of finally becoming the superstar that he seemed destined to be and all. So, is it true? Is he as good as that?

He lacks a solid jump shot & shows flashes of amazing passing and ball-handling. Has some good court vision and his b-ball IQ is high, but we havent seen it shine through much. He's had his moments where we thought for sure he'll be our starting PG in the future, but then it all fades. Maybe he just needed some more time, I dunno.

Yes this was a very interesting draft...better than in recent years.

If we haven't drafted Korolev in the first place would we been in the playoffs this past year? Korolev didn;t suprise me a bit for the past 2 years they should've put him in the NBDL

I think we passed on Granger the year we picked Korolev.

Yeah I was really hoping to get Granger or Antoine Wright...instead we get a skinny shooter who sat the bench.

I wonder if Korolev will stick around and play for the minimum?

Does anyone know when the press conference to introduce Al and Jared will be?

That's a possibility that that he's joing the Clipper Summer League team as a last minute addition.

Apparently Al had his media day today- no word on Jared being part of the introduction, however. He's signed and ready for action at the Vegas Summer League.
