Trade rumors

By Ramona Shelburne on February 16, 2009 6:25 PM | Permalink | Comments (0) | ShareThis

I don't like to trade in the rumor-mongering world that much, or that often. But expect the Clippers name to pop up frequently in those types of stories the next few days. Basically, the Clippers have a lot of guys that a lot of teams have interest in.

My read is that the only untouchable guy on the team right now is rookie Eric Gordon, followed closely by Al Thornton, Zach Randolph and Marcus Camby.

That's right, Marcus Camby. I've been repeatedly told the Clippers do not want to trade Camby. And really, why should they. Camby has a relatively inexpensive contract, has been a great team leader and is playing like an All Star.

Now, does that mean the team would never trade one of the aforementioned players? No. It means they don't want to trade them and it would take a lot to change their minds.

Notice, however, who I did not list among the untouchables and draw your own conclusions. The best way I can explain it is that the Clippers are listening and taking calls. I wouldn't say they are making a ton of them.

I was told, however, that if the Clippers were trying to dump Kaman's salary, they could've done it in two seconds. In other words, that's not the objective.

Their front office believes that if everyone is healthy, the team can contend for a playoff spot. Coach Dunleavy has spoken repeatedly about wanting to see how Camby, Randolph and Chris Kaman play together, which still hasn't happened.

But this time of year, you always answer your phone.

I don't know if the kaman/davis for jkidd was really ever confirmed but if that would have gone down I REALLY would have lost interest in this team. I can't understand if Mdun is really shopping these guys or trying to scare them straight. If he is, with intentions of doing it, he should be fired unless lebron/wade for those 2 was on the table. We really need to find out what this team is made of before blowing it up, I believe we are 9-7 with camby/zach/al/gordon/bd as our starters(.5625). That is pretty much flirting with the playoffs. All that with out kaman in the line up. I just can't wait to see how good we really are.

^^ If Dun is trying to scare them straight, good for him and the fans. If that is the case, that happens all the time in the working world. It is no different than telling an employee that if he doesn't shape-up, he will be replaced by a younger and less expensive replacement.

If you haven't noticed, Baron's demeanor in the last game was a complete 360 degrees from most of the season. If it wasn't the rumors that changed his attitude than he must have been enlightened by some magical force cause people don't change that quickly. JMHO

Winning cures everything you guys. We've won 3 out of 4 and we're finally starting to look like a basketball team. Everyone on the team should be in a better mood right now.

Im glad B.Diddy is playing better. Wether this was to scare the players straight or not, it worked. Love the energy and intensity Baron was giving off in the last game against NY. Thats the same electricity we saw in GS. And thats what we needed all season and we definately need to push at a good end of the season run. With Kaman and Taylor hopefully bakc in the lineup in the next few weeks, we should look more and more promising.

I jsut cant wait.

In all honesty Kaman needs to go. Either we add a piece which compliments the team now or a future prospect or picks which would benefit us in the near future. We could also go for a nice expiring contract that could land us a superstar in 09 or 2010

I'll probably get chastized for this but I'd be interested in moving Al Thorton for a 1st rounder if possible (not sure if he'd get that value though). As much as I understand that Throton is an incredible scorer, I don't believe he does enough defensively, and he has always been a guy who needs to "get his". We've got too many guys on the team who are shoot first players, and in all honesty, I'd rather have Z-Bo or Gordon take the look than Throton. With that said, IF we could move Thorton for a 1st rounder, we'd still go into the draft with a very formidable starting five with the change of grabing and developing two young stars behind very quality players.

MDun's strategy seems to include Kaman, Camby and Z-Bo on the floor together, and with the contract BD has, either Thorton or Gordon will lose time. I'm sold on Gordon being a perennial All Star in his prime, I can't say the same for Thorton, and that's why I consider him expendable. I'd much rather bring in another draft pick, then grab best available with our lottery pick and a solid PG with the second first rounder. We'll have a core that can grow with the likes of Gordon & DJordan.

i am not saying that i want to trade thornton, but i read that the wizards might be open to trading their first round pick this year, which could very likely be a top 3 pick.

^^ No chastising from me BUT why would you trade a VERY GOOD complimentary player for a 1st round draft pick or less? Thornton isn't one that would have a "fit" if he was asked to do less. Why trade for a draft pick that could result in an even more "shoot first" mentality player? If you consider Gordon an "All-star" and not Thornton, wouldn't it be ideal to keep Thornton just for that fact you mentioned?

Just saying...

yeah i agree clipper joe. we need non scoring role players to fill out this roster we have. role players are not really picked in the top 5.

I hear what you are saying Joe, but I don't believe that Thornton would be "okay" with less playing time, and I do not believe he's going to get ANY better than what he is now. And if you trade for a draft pick you have some control over the guy you are getting, in the sense that you can avoid guys who have to get theirs. I still think there is a chance you can get another me first guy, but personally I think you knew what you were getting with Thornton out of college, a very good scorer who became the ONLY offense on that Florida State team. I don't fault Thornton for wanting to score the rock, I just think, based on the moves we have made since we brought him in, that he's no longer a top 4 option to shoot, and I'd rather have a guy who fills another need other than scoring (if Thornton could improve on defense, it'd be a different story, but I haven't see ANY improvment from him over the 1 1/2 years).

^^I agree. i like Al. he is explosive when he can be. But to add to his offensive flaws, he is very inconsistant. E.G. on the other hand can give you 20+ EVERY night. Al can give you 20+ every two, three games. Then he'll come back with an explosive game. Then return to single digit games for the next couple. That long with his defense and his shot selection are things i feel he needs to improve. Also, he's to indecisive with when he has the ball in his hands. Meaning his feet and legs all fly differet directions and seems like he cant make up his mind when he has the ball in hand.

Other trade news OKC just acquired Tyson Chandler for Joe Smith and Wilcox. OKC just hit the jackpot all they need now is figure out whether Green plays the 2 or 4 role and draft to fill the hole. The West looks like the lower teams are having a bright future going ahead. Hopefully the Clipps can lead he pack.

You make great points about Al but you also embellish what Gordon can do too.

In the last 6 games, Gordon has had 2- 20 point games ( 1 being over 30 points). Al has had 3-20 point games ( 1 being over 30 points).

Considering that both are at 43-44% in field goal %, I say that they are not that far apart as you might think. The only difference that I see is that it is more obvious when Al has an off night than when Gordon does.

On the surface, I agree with you but there isn't much of a difference other than Al's scoring fluctuates more than Gordon's does. Oh, and the fact that Gordon plays much better one on one defense. His team defense is still suspect though...

Marion on the Heat's style of play.

"The game is supposed to be exciting," Marion said Tuesday as he and Marcus Banks were introduced to the Toronto media. "I'm tired of playing that boring style in the half court, watching everybody just go up and run plays, call this play. That's boring. The fans don't enjoy it either. People like to see you get up and down, have high-scoring games and dunks and all that stuff. That's what it's about."

Yeah Marion would of fit real well with us roll

Wonder why Marcus is out? Could we be stashing him so he doesn't get injured?

I was kinda thinking that too. There are a couple of teams that seem desperate for him, might be a good move

i would hate seeing camby go so soon, but i don't even know what i want from this team right now. maybe getting something for him while his value is high is the best thing for us to do. this team needs to form an identity and build a roster to fit that identity.

I totally agree with you. Priority number one in the offseason should be to fire Dunleavy and bring in a new coach. I love the roster we have. No big changes need to be made in the roster. Just get rid of Hart, Ricky Davis, and trade Kaman if there is an offer we can't pass up. We likely will have the MLE to use and a top 5 pick. We have all the pieces to be a dangerous team, but unfortunately our coach has a brain the size of a peanut. We can be scary good if we get rid of Dunleavy.
