It is being reported that Jason Quick of the Oregonian, who is probably close to the situation with the Portland Trailblazers, and the reported buy out of the contract of Steve Francis, is reporting that Francis has agreed to a two year deal with the Clippers for 1 Mil this year and 5 Mil in second year. One could think that maybe he is circulating a rumor, except that this report has contract specifics that on the surface are not adhere to your usual contract structure, and imply that maybe he actaully knows something. There apparently was discussion between Francis and Portland on what kind of contract he would sign so they would know how to structure his contract buyout. Is there any other reports out there that confirm this report?

Funny they would go through so much trouble to buy out Francis, only to sign Steve Blake, who as yet has not become a world beater in the NBA. Most consider him second string material.

I think it's still a rumor re: Francis signing with us Jamfan, though it's more likely to happen than not. We should find out soon though!

Yeah, the title of the thread is a bit misleading. Lets wait until there's an actual source indicating the deal or not.

Hey Jam, I actually posted that same link about two days ago thinking it was pretty much a done deal as well. I still think it probably is and that the club is just waiting for the right time to announce it. The Clips aren't really even talking to anyone else (or at least it seems that way) so I think it's a matter of time. Since then a lot of rumors have come out about other possible destinations for Francis such as Houston, Dallas, and even the Lakers. But I think it's just talk because Houston already has about 8 PG's, and the Lakers are signing Fish. I think Miami could be a player if they don't get MO. Other than that....I think it's pretty certain.

Guess what, Miami didn't land Mo. If Gary Payton is going to retire and Riley ever figures out that Jason Williams has too much wear on his wheels to play extended minutes, then watch out, Francis could make a jump to the Heat. Remember, Riley has a knack for picking up "used" players like Shaq, Odom, Walker, Williams, Payton, ect.

The good news is that we have Mobley, but on the flip side, the Heat (when healthy) are championship contenders in the East.

good point TG.. and i know how close Francis is with Mobley but he is also close with Shaq and one of the coaching staffs in Miami.. so it's possible he might go to the Heats who has a better chance to get another ring. either way i dont care.. we still have an awesome squad with or without him

Another clue to this puzzle of whether or not the Clips already have a committment or not from Francis, would be how they have not negotiated with any of the other top free agent PG's. One by one all the top PG's Blake, Mo, Fish, Hart, Billups, are all gone and the Clips made no attempt to sign any of them. The only other top prospect was Theo Papa who has been offered a contract to stay in Europe and I am not sure he has signed it. But there are no rumors that the Clips have gone after him either. So.....what does that tell you. As bad as they need a starting PG, if they do not get Francis, the only guys left are second tier players who are not good enough to start or carry the team, at least not very far in the playoffs. Imagine if Sam gets hurt. Who is going to run this team? You have to think that they have a committment from Francis. If they don't, this will again be another horrible mistake by our front office and probably Dumleavy. He will be stuck using rookies Diaz and Jordan. Guess Smush is still available.

Boykins would be nice actually- I remember his days with the Clippers- he was dynamite off the bench but he missed a lot of shots. Obviously he's much better nowadays. I think he's looking for the full MLE since he opted out of his old contract which was paying him like $3 million/yr. I'm not sure if it'd be a good idea to get him for that much, but if it has to come down to that a 3 year deal at the MLE probably wouldn't be too risky. His stats are pretty darn good:

I like Boykins, but I noticed that so far he is the only name left that is being mentioned by anybody. Do we have any reason to believe that the Clips are even talking to him? If not, who? Is it Francis or.......? We are running out of options here. I think Boykins would be fun to watch and he does score pretty good. Atkins signed today. If Boykins sign elsewhere and Francis goes to Miami. Then we are down to who? Help me out here but I think the Clippers should be getting a deal done.

Rmor has it that Dallas is also in the running for Francis. Francis has made it clear that he wants to play for a contender.

Last I checked, Dallas and Miami have one up on us. If the deal falls through, who is left?

Brevin Knight hopefully

Knight was offered a contract by Miami. Miami probably won't take Knight and Francis both. So one of them should still be available.

According to this Sun Sentinels article, the Heat hasn't made an offer yet to Brevin Knight, and that they have had discussions with Francis' agent:

What player do u think we can get? Our PG Spot is a definite need if we want to get back to the playoff picture.

Hey, I think that Francis can be a big help to us, especially under the circumstances. But if not him, the I vote for Boykins. Boykins averaged over 14 PPG last season off the bench in limited minutes with a good shooting percentage. Not to mention he is very fun to watch. Our options are slowly being narrowed down for us. But for me, if not Francis, I want the little guy that nobody can catch.
