Steve Francis to return to Rockets

Three-time All-Star picks former team over Heat, Mavs and Clippers

Three seasons and three teams removed from the Rockets, Steve Francis will return to the team for which three times he was an All-Star.

Once known as "Franchise" as the cornerstone of the Rockets' planned post Hakeem Olajuwon rebuilding, Francis chose to return the Rockets on Thursday, passing on more lucrative offers from the Heat, Mavericks and Clippers.

"I think he sees this as a rebirth, as a restart of his career," Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said.

"Steve has a sense we're real close. We think he can be a big part of getting us there. I always thought it was a long shot. Credit to Steve, he chose what he thought was the best chance to win over options that were better financially.

"There was always a chance that Steve would choose Houston, until Steve told me today himself he was coming it felt like a long shot. Jeff Fried was doing a great job as an agent creating options. It came down to Steve focusing on what was the most important to him and that was winning."

The Rockets were limited to the portion of the mid-level exception remaining after acquiring forward Luis Scola last weeks, worth $2.4 million the first year. He will sign a two-year contract with the option to opt out after one season.

Francis played five seasons for the Rockets, averaging 19.3 points, 6.4 assists and 6.1 rebounds. He was traded in June, 2004 to the Orlando Magic along with Cuttino Mobley and Kelvin Cato in the deal to acquire Tracy McGrady. After one strong season with the Magic, he was dealt to the Knicks the next season and generally struggled to regain the form of his first years in the league, usually coming off the bench in the Knicks' crowded backcourt and battling knee troubles last season.

Francis is scheduled for a physical this afternoon, but has reported no problems with the knee since last season.

"It's a combination of a variety of factors including the fit with the team, a comfortableness with the organization and a familiarity with the surroundings," Fried said. "He has a home in Houston. In so many ways, it has remained his home, despite some interim stops, Orlando and New York.

"For Steve, it's coming home."

Dealt the Portland Trail Blazers after the season, he accepted a buyout of the last two seasons of his contract, worth roughly $30 million.

He had considered offers to reunite with Mobley, a friend and former teammate, and Sam Cassell, a friend and business partner, with the Clippers, and to play with each of the 2006 NBA Finals teams, the Mavericks and Heat.

"It's a chance to win," Morey said. "Both Yao (Ming) and Tracy really helped with the recruiting process and are excited about our chance to win with the additions in the off-season," Morey said. "We're feeling good we've addressed a lot of our goals."

The addition of Francis will likely trigger more changes. He would give the Rockets five point guards. Morey has said he is seeking to move John Lucas III. Several teams, the New Orleans Hornets in particular, have indicated interest, but Morey said nothing is imminent. With Francis on the roster, he could also seek to deal last season's starter, Rafer Alston.

"When you have a chance to add a talent like Steve who really fits what coach (Rick Adelman) is trying to do, you do it," Morey said. "Now we have a lot of talent on the roster. Coach and I have to figure out the best way to make it work. What our plans are is still to be determined. Because this was a bit of a long shot, we haven't spent a lot of time on what was the right next step in the coming weeks."

Whew- that's too bad- but perhaps it's for the best. There was always the risk of playing time bickering and other locker room issues, but I thought it was worth it. But now we'll never find out! Let's see what happens now- we are still competing with Miami for a PG. Thanks Clips84 for the news!

b. knight wouldnt be a bad option tho, he is a pass first PG and we have plenty of scorers...

if we do not get one of those two, unless we trade we could bring back old clippers like McGinnis or House, HA!

McGinnis?? House??

Heckkk No!!!

McGinnis has the ugliest floater shot in the NBA! House has a 3pt. mentality and will never pass!

Bring Boykins! Dood can both score & pass! he is efficient...& thats the key to a successful season...EFFICIENCY!

yea i know about the HA!

But I agree...let Elgin Go!!!

Sign someone else pleease!

What if we trade Elgin Baylor for Jerry West??? Wouldnt West want to improve a Playoff Caliber team who has proven to all that when healthy...the team would be dangerous to face in the post-season!

Boykins, Boykins, Boykins, er...uh....Somebody, Somebody, Somebody.....er...uh.....Peyton, Peyton, Peyton! Our choices are getting smaller and smaller. So we might as well go smallest. It's Boykins.

clippers always make this same mistake...focus on one free agent the entire summer while other free agents sign with other teams, and in the end that free agent that they focused on goes to another team, and theyre left with whats left. Examples: Kobe, Arenas, Ray Allen. I love boykins, but he's not a pg. He may have the body of a pg, but in reality he's a sg, just a pure scorer, and we need someone that is pass first. As far as brevin knight goes, he's alright, I just don't want us to overpay him, which tends to happen when u have no other choice. The best thing to do is make a trade, tim thomas has become expendable, we need to get someone for him. It's too bad jason hart's gone, i really liked him and thought he played well for us.

Yeah, monday morning quarterbacking now seems to say that we should have not let Hart get away. Actually the Clippers run a slow down offense, so a shooting PG is OK. Hell, we don't even fast break very often. Boykins averaged 14 PPG last season and 4-5 assists in limited minutes off the bench. Not bad.

Does anyone have Brevin Knight's phone number?

He'd be my preference. Boykins is a close second. Anybody else would be a decent 2nd PG, but LAC needs someone who's a legitimate starter. Otherwise that would leave to much on Sam's shoulders.

I wouldn't mind seeing them pay the full MLE ($5.3 mil) if they only had to commit to one or two years. LAC has to make a big financial decision on Shaun next summer, when they'll know more about his future. So to commit long term dollars now would reduce their options next summer.

Then when they have a clearer picture of Shaun's propsects, they can then re-enter the free-agent or draft market for a PG. But no long term decisions this summer.

You gotta bring in Brevin Knight. He can run the court like a true PG...we have enough scorers with Sam, Mobley, Maggette, Thornton, Brand and Thomas...I like Boykins...but he is a SG trapped in a PG's body. Gotta go with Brevin here I think.

At this point, sign one of them. Maybe we shouldn't be so choosy. If these two guys get signed by other teams, out options are not going to be as much fun. Boykins or Knight, get one of them and I'll be happy. Lose them both, and we will be wondering what Clippers management is doing. They have enough money to land one of them, actually both of them. Let's go.

As much as I love Boyknis, he can't start and he's too small to play D. It would be great to have him as backuo BUT. We got problems.

Wow, it looks like all the better teams as well as lottery teams are getting better in the Western Conference.

With the exception of us, Sacramento, Golden State, Minesota, New Orleans, & Memphis.

Seattle, Portland, Utah, Denver, Lakers, Phoenix, Houston, are all a step on us, and San Antonio, and Dallas are a given contender.

So what now?? I feel that we are once again settling for whatever is out there, instead of bettering ourselves. I feel that with another average point guard, we are looking at a .500 team.

To many inconsistencies with the Clippers except for Elton & Corey.

Mobley a year older, not the shooter that he once was.

Thomas, Kaman, has to step up

Cassell is to old.

We have a above average inside game, but to compliment the inside, you need the outside. With Dumbleavy not having a running style offense, and a lack of outside shooters, looks like we may get double teamed on the inside again. But hopefully he has the brains to start Maggette.

At this point, I would like to bring back Piatkowski !!!!

Yep...I'm a bit upset and disappointed. The Clippers held out for Francis and let all the other top point guards sign with other teams. The only consolation is that the "top" point guards out there were not really that great, with the possible exception of that Steve Francis returns to form this season. But that's no longer an option so now what? I like the Navarro situation; however, Washington wants to package him with a big contract guy (Etan Thomas, Brandan Haywood, Antonio Daniels) in order to make a trade happen.

I want to bring up another option...give Portland a call. Steve Blake just signed with them, giving them a ton of point guards on their roster. They have Blake, Jarret Jack, Sergio Rodriguez, and draft pick Taurean Green. What would it take to get Jarret Jack? I know he's a bit young but he had a pretty good season last year. He averaged 12 points and 5.3 assists, while playing 79 games. Not too bad. I just can't see Portland keeping all those point guards and Jack's contract is only about a million a year. I don't know if they could make a trade match salary wise (maybe sign and trade with Korolev along with a draft pick to entice Portland???) but it's a thought.

Brandan Haywood is a decent center. Probably could be a backup for Kaman. I like Jarret Jack...I dont know how much it would take to get him though. At this moment, i dont see a trade working...cause who really wants Mobley?? Ross is not a high demand player. Maggette and Brand are the only ones that teams would trade for. Maybe throwing in a 1st round pick would help, I dunno...I'd probably take this trade: Navarro & Haywood for Thomas and 2008 1st round pick. Paul Davis could play backup PF. The only way Washington would go for it is to reduce their cap room.

I do not think that trade will go down, plus i met jarret jack when he was in college and he was a ****.

Orlando is apprently looking to trade arroyo for a big, this may be an option?

Yeah Portland has a crazy surplus of point guards. I don't know what their plan is to do with all of them up there. Jarret Jack would be a solid player for us- we might be able to get him for a first round pick (we know how much they like those).

As for Washington wanting to reduce their cap room- I suppose they'd want some expiring contracts. Maybe Aaron Williams + Paul Davis + Will Conroy + Pick for Navarro & Haywood or Etan Thomas?

I'm not too excited about Jarrett Jack. I saw Portland twice at Staples last year and Jack was invisible.

In my opinion the only PGs which were good players were Mo williams and Francis...Once we haven't signed either of them we only can sign a nonfactor player...Brevin Knight is a good passer although I think he's too short...Jarrett Jack doesn't convince me either...Jack is the typical player that some coaches love to coach: serious, arranged, good defense...but without talent enough to take his own decisions and make things happen...Better take Knight
