The Detroit Pistons have reached agreement with free-agent guard Ben Gordon(notes) and forward Charlie Villanueva(notes), a source with knowledge of the talks told Yahoo! Sports Wednesday evening.
Gordon will receive a five-year contract worth around $55 million while Villanueva’s five-year deal is expected to be worth about $35 million.
Gordon and Villanueva, who played together for a year at UConn, traveled to Detroit on Wednesday morning to meet with Detroit president Joe Dumars and other Pistons front-office officials. They took a tour of the practice facility in Auburn Hills, had lunch with management and both ultimately came to terms on an agreement. Gordon agreed first and Villanueva followed soon after.
The loss of Gordon is a blow to the Bulls, who tried to re-sign the shooting guard. Gordon turned down contract extensions for $54 million and $50 million in the past two offseasons as a restricted free agent. It is believed the Bulls were willing to go to $10 million a season for him, but were outbid by the Pistons.
No free agents can sign until the league-mandated moratorium ends on July 8.
The Pistons also continue to negotiate with one of their own free agents, forward Antonio McDyess.
The signing of Gordon, 26, could make another former UConn player, Richard Hamilton, expendable in a trade. Hamilton, 31, could be used to bring back another low-post presence: perhaps Utah Jazz forward Carlos Boozer, Los Angeles Clippers’ center Chris Kaman or New Orleans Hornets center Tyson Chandler. Gordon averaged 20.7 points a game last season for the Bulls and 18.5 in his five seasons in Chicago. He was the third pick in the 2004 NBA draft.
Dumars is remaking the Pistons, who are expected to lose Rasheed Wallace to free agency. Dumars fired coach Michael Curry on Wednesday, and ex-Pistons coach Doug Collins is considered the frontrunner for the job. Sources say Collins still has to sell his staying power and stability to Detroit management. Former Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson will be considered, too. |

| No way. His contract is awful at 4 years and 12.65 million a year. He plays the same position as Gordon. This would also cut into our 2010 money. |

I say nay, I like Rip but right now we do not need to tamper with our starters (unless for some miracle we went baron for nash lol) I think we should bulk our bench and maybe persue a good or average sf/sg who can guard great example shane battier |

| Absolutely not. Since we just unloaded Z-BO, we should not be looking to unload another big. We have to remember that our bigs are injury prone |

| Not now, but I would've wanted Rip over Q no offense to Q he's a good player but Rips mid range game is a monster and he's a better defender. Aldridge said Kamans kicker made him harder to trade, but waited a day later we probably could've landed RIP. |

| the only way we get Rip is by sending them EG and thats not gonna happen. Sail on Z-boat, sail on. Kaman is our center to stay. |

| How about a three way trade with Kaman going to Detroit Hamilton going to Chicago and Hinrich coming here? the salaries work and Hinrich would be willing to come off the bench something Hamilton wasn't willing to do last season behind AI. |

| Camby isn't going to be around past this year most likely and DJ isn't ready, I'd only trade Kaman for a mobile big, Andris Biedrins maybe? Doesn't matter, Golden State wouldn't do that |

nooo.. no more trading our bigs.. Camby comes off the books next year and most likely wont come back unless were a serious contender and DJ is still very raw...We shouldn't trade Kaman at all..I like his contract.. For a Big its not that bad... |

Q Rich and Thornton for Prince and a future 2nd round pick.
You might think to yourself, why give up a young prospect like Thornton, well he's going to turn 26 this year and Prince is only 3 years older at 29, with only 2 years left on his deal. He's the ideal fit because he's that glue guy that we've all been talking about that we need, and it makes sense for Detroit who's now going in a younger direction with their new signings. |

Yeah, but I disagree right now we are in the works of having a solid team, with a little more bench strengthening I'd say were geared up and ready to go |

i dont understand how we lost scoring? Q averages 10pts and Griffin should at least average 10pts or more, so there are our 20 pts |

i know, but people cant just assume we are going to be scoring less because we lost a 20 and 10 guy. Zach is good but we will not be lacking scoring just cause he is gone |

3 years is a lot in NBA years.
I say no way we trade Kaman for Hamilton. We cant rely on Camby past this season and that would just leave a big hole at Center. Deandre looks promising but no consistency yet. |
