Is there a single reason why the Clippers front-office have not made a single move this off-season? Are we in for another uneventful and disappointing season? Are they just waiting for next year, when we finally lose Elton Brand to free-agency? Do you really think that we'd get to sign a big time player next year?

I believe the reason they haven't announced a move yet is that they are working something that involves trading a recently signed player. You can't move someone in mutliplayer deal within 30 days of signing them. So they could be involved in a trade involving Thornton or Mo Williams or someone recently signed ... they cannot announce this until late August.

I think you might be right ether, esp. now that Brevin Knight is gone. There are lots of decent free agents left, however, and here's a list:

Anderson Varejao (he's a really good player, we could get him maybe in a sign-n-trade)

P.J. Brown

Chris Webber

Earl Boykins (the Clipper's next target?)

James Posey

Eddie Jones

Mickael Pietrus

Sasha Pavlovic

Jarvis Hayes

Ruben Patterson

Matt Barnes

Jannero Pargo (a possibility)

Corliss Williamson

Jake Tsakalidis

Charlie Bell (restricted FA, but a possibility)

That might be a possibility, Ether....but I really don't think the Clips are interested in trading Thornton. He provides some insurance for us if Maggette walks plus he provides youth and athleticism which the Clippers clearly need. I am starting to think the delay for the Clippers is because they 'may' be working on a deal for Navarro. The Wizards have a deadline to trade him that expires this week and the Clips may have an offer out or are at least talking to Washington.

True G-Man - But he could be moved in a deal involving Yi, which might put the Clips in a better situation. Might expalin why Al has no jersey # in the photos that SmyLee posted! wink

Ether- after seeing Yi play more I'm not so sure about him anymore in terms of the immediate impact he could bring. He still looks like a project. I do like how he is very unselfish, however, and his length & athleticism are undeniable. I'm sure he would love to come to LA.

I hope G-Man's hunch is right about the front office trying to get a deal done to bring Navarro. Now it sounds like the Lakers are trying to get him too- definitely don't want that....

I agree that Thorton will not be traded but not because he is insurance for Maggette but rather insurance for Mobley. Maggette plays the 2 guard and Thorton will play the small forward or maybe back up for Brand. Ross will play back up for Maggette.

Repped High Quality Post

Here is a quote from an interesting article in the Indianapolis Star (Indystar.com) for those of you who seem to need the Cliipers to "make a move" just for the sake of making a move:

"Mid-level exceptions are the greatest threat to fiscal sanity for teams, and tend to lead to the most mistakes. They’re available to every team that’s over the salary cap, which is nearly every team, but there aren’t enough worthy free agents available to justify them. Some teams, eager to pacify their eager fans, inevitably reach out and touch the wrong someone.

An exceptionally well-connected league insider once told me the story of how Brian Cardinal got his mid-level. Seems Memphis owner Michael Heisley, frustrated by general manager Jerry West’s lack of activity, walked into West’s office one day and asked why he hadn’t signed anyone yet. So an exasperated West picked up his phone, called Cardinal’s agent and offered the mid-level on the spot. Then he turned to Heisley and said something along the lines of “There, you happy now?”

Now nobody in Memphis is happy about Cardinal’s contract _ other than Cardinal, of course.

This year, the real bargain-hunting will come at the end of this month, and into August. There are more capable free agents than there are teams with money to spend, so some capable players are going to be available for pennies on the dollar in the surplus bin.

The best GMs know how to play this game. They have to strike when the time is right, but they also have to be savvy shoppers who know they don’t always get what they pay for in free agency. A little patience and a sharp eye can go a long way toward building a team."

I think Baylor and Dunleavy have been prudent and have done a pretty good job in determining who can help this team and who is a "bad contract" waiting to happen. The only difference maker at PG that we could afford was Francis and they went after him pretty hard. There are still some good players available - some better than others. I just hope that we get a good player that is a good teammate as well with an ability to be a leader on the floor more than someone who can just make a pass or hit a shot. Be patient folks......

Great article & post GMan- repped! I completely agree- you have to be prudent and not give in to some of these free agents' quest for the full MLE, or else you might be stuck with a bad contract for many years that no one would take from your hands.

Brevin Knight and Earl Boykins are still pretty safe MLE's at the PG position. I can understand why some people are mad that the Clips havent signed anyone, when there's definitely a few holes to fill...but at the same time, the management knows what they're doing and sometimes letting the dust settle and using the excess time of the off-season to get the right player for the right deal is the best thing to do. Most of the good talent went back to their same teams this year and this FA class was very weak. So I'm not mad they havent done anything yet.

Great post G-MAN04! That's what I've been saying all along. The front office has always been quite about everything and I know Baylor is capable of filling the last piece of the puzzle. I have no worries since the vital pieces are in place. Great job on the article once again!

I've said this a few times, but Navarro would be an upgrade at SG. I think we could shop Mobley for Navarro. He seems like a much better shooter. He could also float to PG in a pinch.

G-man are you from Naptown? I used to play in the alley behind Oscar's house but obviously it's not contageous.
