This morning in the Washington Post, Ivan Carter wrote:

According to a league source, the Memphis Grizzlies are considering offering a first-round pick in next year's draft in exchange for Navarro's rights.

I don't know the particulars of the deal, but the Spanish-language website of his old team, FC Barcelona, reports what a league source confirms to me: that there is now an agreement in principle whereby Washington will ship Navarro's rights to Memphis.

It's on several Spanish sites, in fact.

Navarro would be reunited with one of his closest friends, and former teammate, Pau Gasol.

Doh- according to the article below JC Navarro has signed with Memphis. Sigh- there goes a player who probably would've been a great fit. Interestingly though the article didn't mention what the Grizz had to give up to get him- probably a first round pick.

Navarro joins the Grizzlies The Spaniard player reached an agreement with the Memphis team, where fellow Pau Gasol shines.

03-08 | 17:30 hs. The deadline imposed by Axa Barcelona on Juan Carlos Navarro to join an NBA team (Washington Wizards kept their rights over the player even though they were no interested in him) came to an end, and they announced that the Catalan center signed for Memphis.

Navarro and Barcelona will negotiate the release of the player; Navarro played only at Barcelona, but he must pay a 3.5 million-dollar clause.

Navarro wanted to move to the NBA so badly (he is the fifth Spaniard arriving at the NBA after Gasol, Garbajosa, Calderon and Sergio Rodriguez) that Barcelona decided to lower the termination clause from 10 million to 3.5 million dollars.

Previously, Barcelona scheduled July 25 as deadline for Navarro to join some NBA team; Washington Wizards kept their rights over the player since their pick in the 2002 draft (40th in second-round), so they increased the value of his player, making an eventual hiring hard to achieve.

Memphis, Boston, Lakers and Miami were intersted in Navarro, but Washington refused to release him to the point of feeling "kidnapped" by the Wizards for they didn't intend to give their players to a direct rival.

So, Barcelona extended the deadline to August 3; finally, after though negotiations, the Catalan guard joined the Pau Gasol team.

Navarro must pay Barcelona 3.5 million dollars to have the agreement terminated; he may pay it during the following three years thanks to a deal reached with president Joan Laporta.

Navarro, world champion with Spain in 2006, winner of Copa del Rey, ACB Liga and Euroliga with Barcelona, delayed his arrival at the NBA in the 2005-06 season, when he got a four-year extension agreement.

Navarro was chose MVP at the 2005-06 Liga, ended the season as the highest scorer in the league.

Wizard guard Juan Carlos Navarro is now reportedly going to Memphis. Reports state the pick will be most like a 2008 first round pick, but it will be lottery protected. If so, the pick will most likely shift to the 2009 pick and only be top 3 protected. Washington had to deal Navarro today, otherwise it would break the buyout agreement set by his old club FC Barcelona which stated that in order for the buyout to be $2 million and not $14 million, a decision had to be made by 11:59 PM today.

The Grizzlies will be able to pay up to $500,000 of the buyout, but Navarro must pay the other $1.5 million himself.

The Wizards had draft rights to Navarro after selecting him 40th in the 2002 NBA draft. Navarro played with Pau Gasol on the Spanish National team who won the gold medal at the 2006 FIBA World Championships.

Navarro probably won't pay dime per say, His agent will negotiate a signing bonus or incentives that will hide the balance.
