August 16, 2007

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Los Angeles Clippers signed guard Guillermo Diaz on Thursday.

Diaz, the Clippers' second-round pick in 2006, played in the Czech Republic and Greece last season. The 6-foot-2 guard averaged 10.2 points and 3.2 rebounds in five games for the Clippers' Las Vegas Summer League team.

Diaz averaged 20.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 15 games for CEZ Basketball Nymburk in the Czech Republic. He also played five games in the Greek League, averaging 13 points. He played three college seasons at Miami.

not sure what to think of this? im uncertain? r we changing our style of play? Doesn't that tie up all our contracts up. I guess Korlev is the odd man out. Imean i like guillermo but he did not show me much in summer league. What do u guys think?

From what I've read, Guillermo Diaz wasn't anything to write home about. But since we just signed Powell, I guess Korolev's walking papers were on the same desk ready for delivery. I guess Dunleavy thought another guard wouldn't hurt. Well it looks like the team is set.

Diaz: That's 14 players signed. So they have one slot left: JJ, Korolev, Conroy or leave open for flexibility. I'm thinking it'll be JJ. Since 2 of the 14 are injured, it means Diaz currently wll be dressed and available all the time. Interesting. He'll be a crowd pleaser though. Looking forward to seeing him play during preseason. wink

Jaric: I completely agree with you SmyLee. He would have been awesome if they never had to start him. Great combo guard OFF THE BENCH.

Agree with both of you but we got someone that help us get to the second round of the play-offs...Cassell.

I think Diaz, by the end of this year, will surprise us all. He is a shooting guard in a point guard body, with the leaps of a high fly act. If he finds his way and his confidence, he has the athleticism to do anything. He is quick, he can jump, he can drive to the hoop, he can dish it off, and he can hit the 3. He is just short at 6"2" for a SG, but not to short to be a PG. That is the only reason that while slated to go in the late 1st round, he slipped into the second round and became a steal for the Clippers. He is young and has time to find it. He led his team in scoring in the Euro league and played well in Greece. At a tryout with the Suns before the draft, he measured a 48" lateral vertical leap. At some point early in the season, he is going to jump over a center for a slam dunk and we are all going to say............are you kidding me. Get ready for the show. It is just a matter of time before the show begins.

I think he's too talented to just let go somewhere else. Gotta remember that he is still learning the game of basketball and he has potential to be a solid bench player in this league. Now that he's officially signed, I'll officially give him the nickname of "Firestarter". I'm looking forward to seeing how he can help this team.

In my opinion, by signing Guillermo Diaz, we got ourselves a Kevin Martin/Fred Jones type player. Diaz can definitely shoot and can jump with the best of 'em. He'll contribute real well, not immediate, but later in the season he'll do his job.

What happens now to Jared Jordan? Is he being sent off to Euro-League?

That's what I was wondering. I don't think they have any money left for either JJ or Korolev. I hope this doesn't end up hurting the team. I liked both players.

So does the line up end up being:

PG:Cassell/Knight/Diaz?

SG:Cuttino/Maggette/Thornton/Ross/Diaz?

SF:Maggette/Thornton/Thomas/Ross

PF:Thomas/Thornton/Powell/Williams

C:Kaman/Powell/Williams

I think we need to sign Jordan...he'll be a wildcard player!

Wow that's really odd if they opted to sign Diaz over Jordan- Diaz is definitely no point guard. I suppose that they think that Diaz is better than Daniel Ewing??? I would have to beg to differ there. Maybe the signing is non-guaranteed- kind of like an invite for training camp where you would have to make the team.

In college, Diaz was the starting SG and played back up PG. JJ is a good assist style PG. Problem is, he is to slow to guard anybody. NBA PG's will eat him alive. We can teach him the NBA game, but you can not make a slow horse run faster. He will be a defensive liability. And you know how Coach Dunleavy feels about that. Diaz will be the 3rd PG with Livingston out. When Livingston comes back, he can swing to SG. JJ can not do that. That is the reason Diaz was signed and JJ was not.

Clips 84: Your line-up sounds right, but don't forgot to add Paul Davis to the picture.

You also asked if they still do have enough money to sign Jordan. I believe the scale for 2nd round draft picks is less than $1 mil. And also, it does not count against the cap. So there's no financial issue if that's what they want to do.

I'm not sure if the same is true for Korolev, since he's a free agent. But I can't see that being much more than $1 mil either.

This makes sense considering we have both Cassell & Knight @ PG. This can also keep Maggette playing longer at SF & SG on the second unit (either or). But like David also said; "Maybe the signing is non-guaranteed- kind of like an invite for training camp where you would have to make the team".

Both analysis are good. Since the front office never elaborates on new contracts, one can only wonder.

I don't understand this move...He didn't show anything playing in the summerleague. korolev without playing neither in our summerleague team...without giving him an oppotunity for a 13th pick...wow! too much disorder in clipperland... I'm sorry but I'm feeling very pesimistic for this next season...without brand and without any interesting move in summer...

Yeah well they better sign Jared Jordan- if they think that both Cassell and Knight are going to go the entire season injury-free it'd be a huge mistake. I'm sure that's not the case. Maybe Jordan's camp is asking for too much $, and the Clippers are going to wait it out with him. Unless there's some amazing progress going on with Shaun's knee and that he can be read by training camp, the Clippers really need one more point guard. Will Conroy is a possibility but Jordan was clearly the best Clipper PG at the Summer League.

I didnt think it would happen, purely because Diaz didnt have much of a summer league. But this guy has big time athleticism, and I think they see an opportunity to see if they can use him. If they decided to sign him over Jared Jordan, I think it's a mistake, but if they signed him just for his potential, I dont think its a big deal. He could come in handy to add energy off the bench. If he improves his shooting, he may be something. But Jared Jordan, is a unique talent and I believe he should be signed as well. One of the two should definitely be sent to the NBDL though.

i'd be surprised if Diaz' deal was guaranteed. with corey and eb entering their prime (hopefully elton will be back soon enough to make a difference) not to mention their contract status, and sam making his last stand, if the clippers were to offer a combo guard a guaranteed deal i'd like them to bring in someone who is a proven nba contributor. flip murray is going to be cut by the pistons, he could be everything hollywood robinson wasn't for the clippers. speaking of players named murray, i knew the clippers were cursed last year when they brought in lemon murray for a look in the preseason. the final nail in the proverbial coffin for last season was the doug christie debacle (see-exlaker). that is, from strictly a bad kharma viewpoint if you know what i mean.

No he hasn't. I was kind of curious to see myself so I searched and found this article on Clippers.com

Here it is;

Clippers Sign Will Conroy; Waive Zeljko Rebraca

April 6, 2007

The Los Angeles Clippers today signed guard Will Conroy of the Tulsa 66ers of the NBA Development League, it was announced by Vice President of Basketball Operations Elgin Baylor. In a related move, the Clippers waived center Zeljko Rebraca.

Conroy joins the Clippers for the second time this season, as he played two games for Los Angeles this season from Feb. 28 " March 5, 2007. A member of the NBA Development League Second Team, Conroy appeared in 42 games for the Tulsa 66ers, averaging 15.0 points, 10.6 assists and 5.1 rebounds.

Recognized as a 2007 D-League All-Star, Conroy also signed a 10-day contract with the Memphis Grizzlies on Jan. 30, 2007 and played in three games. Conroy averaged 4.0 assists, 2.0 rebounds in 15.5 minutes in his two games with the Clippers this season.

The 6-2, 195 pound point guard was a standout at the University of Washington, leaving the school as the Huskies all-time leader in assists in a career and a season. Originally a walk-on at Washington, Conroy was the first Husky player to ever top 200 assists in a season. The Seattle native also finished his outstanding four-year college career 21st on the Huskies all-time scoring list and led Washington to its first-ever Pac-10 Tournament Championship as a senior in 2004-05 while earning Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 honors.

Conroy played in the NBA Development League last season as well, earning All-NBA Development League Honorable Mention honors in 2005-06.

Rebraca did not play a game for the Clippers in 2006-07, as he was sidelined the entire season due to disc-related lower back discomfort since a training camp physical discovered the injury on Sept. 25, 2006. Rebraca underwent surgery on his lower back to remove herniated disc fragments on Jan. 30, 2007. A five-year NBA veteran who also played with Detroit and Atlanta, Rebraca leaves the Clippers after two seasons that saw him average 5.6 points and 2.9 rebounds in a total of 87 appearances. Rebraca signed with Los Angeles as a free agent in 2004.

I don't wanna start an info war but you are talking about a new from the 6 April...Today it's 19th august. Conroy has not signed yet for any european team but there are options about he could be signed for an italian team...

On the other hand rebraca has signed for an ACB team: Pamesa Valencia...and Singleton for Tau Ceramica...wow!so many former clippers playing in spain next year

Big Z's old..dont need him.

James Singleton wont play for the Clippers anymore b/c of Dunleavy.

Will Conroy wont play for the Clippers b/c he doesnt fit the kind of offense/defense we have; besides....he wont get any playing time like Singleton.

I never meant it to be an"info war", I was curious myself. I found the last article written about him and I thought it would be helpful ....thats it!

If you have any new articles that have him weighing his options (italy) , let me know. Please don't take offense at what I posted. I just wanted to keep the fans informed.

Conroy originally signed a 10 day contract on Feb 28th, 2007. He was released on May 5th, 2007. When Livingston was injured, the front office released Rebraca in order to sign Conroy again on April 6th, 2007. This wasn't a 10 day contract so my best GUESS is he got a 1 year contract which means he is a Clipper till next year. The reason there are no "other" articles is because there is nothing happening with him...he is a Clipper. I could be wrong but I doubt it. I searched everywhere for something on him but to no avail.

I just want to let you know that I had no idea about Conroy until you brought him up. I completely forgot about him with everything else thats been going on with the team. You mentioned that "you think" he signed elsewhere which means you were not sure so I did the research for both of us. I didn't know the answer before I looked so don't think I was trying to be a "smart ass" or claim I know everything. I don't want any friction since we are on the same team.

It's all good guys! Miquel usually hears of European signings before it's news here so Conroy is most likely gone. Thought it's not like we would really need him with Jared Jordan around.

I not sure that is entirely true David. I looked into this after my last post. He is still UNDER CONTRACT with the Clippers. According to NBA.COM, he is under contract. I never said anything wrong except look into something he wasn't sure about. I was curious myself so I looked into it. Since I'm sure the fans like myself want to know these things I thought it was appropriate to post it. I meant no disrespect to anyone. C'mon David, give me a little bit of credit on this. I will post all the current transactions....

http://www.eurobasket.com/ITA/ita.asp

this is an extract:

Otherwise than previously posted, Melvin Booker (185-G-72, college: Missouri) decided not to join Virtus Bologna. The team is now pointing on Scoonie Penn or Will Conroy. Premiata Montegranaro completed the roster signing Sharrod Ford (206-F-82, agency: David Lee services, college: Clemson).

Take it easy fellas....lol! Actually you're both right. Conroy is technically still under contract but according to a couple of sources he is very close to signing with VidiVici Bologna of the Italian Euroleague and it could happen very soon. Here is an excerpt from DraftExpress.com:

"#45 pick Jared Jordan is still yet to sign, but he will probably get a $50,000 partial soon enough and go fight it out in training camp with Guillermo Diaz for the Clippers last roster spot. Diaz signed a partially guaranteed contract for a portion of the MLE, which allows the Clippers to keep him for three years on a near-minimum contract. Yaroslav Koralez is likely to sign even if it's not official yet, and Paul Davis' contract became fully guaranteed last month. WILL CONROY is still officially on the roster, but he's reportedly seen the writing on the wall and is very close to signing with Italian Euroleague squad VidiVici Bologna. The Clippers only started the season with 14 players on their roster last year."

Good info everyone! LAC likes to keep us guessing with their quiet front office.

The article states LAC only started with 14 players last season. But 07-08 is a WAY different story. 2 of the 14 will be injured until at least January, so they'll really only have 12 available in November. Somewhat risky. Also, with so few available players, they couldn't utilize the NBDL (I know, they never have before!).

On the other hand, leaving the 15th spot allows them to quickly fill in case of emergency needs.

By the way Miquel, I'll be in Barcelona next month. Any good restaurant recommendations?

No prob CJ- nothing to be sorry about!

Personally I still don't understand why they opted to keep Diaz over Ewing. Obviously Diaz is more athletic but Ewing is way more experienced and skilled. Hopefully Diaz will show some things that will make me stop scratching my head about that decision....
