Dear Clipper Nation, it is April 24th today. This day marks a tragic day in history because nearly 93 years ago over 1.5 million Armenians were slaughtered, brutally killed and erased from history. Their legend lives on? On April 24th, 1915, the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) planned out to systematically wipe out all the Armenians of Turkey (many Armenians lived and still do live in Turkey as a result of Turkey forcefully taking Armenian lands). As World War 1 was underway, Turkey could hide behind the commotion and carry out their evil plans with the world not looking. All Armenians were disarmed, and then over 1.5 million Armenians were killed - the working men and intellectuals and leaders were shot or hanged in the city squares. Then the women, children and elderly were forced out of their homes and sent to walk through the Syrian desert to their deaths. I can sit here and type of such inhumane atrocities and vulgar methods of the cruelties the Turks used towards the Armenians, but I do not need to put you through such discomfort. What reason did they have? Why were the Armenians targeted and set to be eliminated? So a Turkey (in a bit of a slump, they were known as the "Sick Man of Europe") could be ethnically cleansed, and have a more glorious and pure Turkish state. Our main differences was that we lived in Turkey and kept our tongue (language, distinct Armenian language) and, more importantly, we kept our Christian religion. I just ask for the Clipper Nation to know about this event, maybe read more about it because it has been 93 years and Turkey has not yet recognized the Armenian Genocide. Whats worst? America, as a whole, has not deemed the 1915 killings as Genocide. I am an American, and I will not stand for anything less than the USA to acknowledge the murders as Genocide, massacres is not even a proper term for it. Being born a certain race and being Christian is not a reason to be wiped out. Referring to the earlier question, does their legend live on? Armenian blood lives, as well as the tongue throughout the Armenians spread out across the world (Armenian Diaspora). We are still a Christian people, as we have been since 301 AD (Armenians were the first nation to have adopted Christianity and have followed Christ throughout). But Armenians cannot help but to live in the past until the Genocide is recognized. The souls of 1.5 million Armenians would not rest in peace, and neither will the minds of all Armenians in the present day and the future. It is most important that the Clipper Nation know about this since LA is the home of the largest group of Armenians of the Diaspora. There are more Armenians living outside Armenia than inside, and LA has the largest population. God bless us all, if anyone has any questions I am very eager to answer them email me at LaLoveSREPPILC@yahoo.com

| Thank you for the background. It is a good thing to know that awareness is everywhere. it is a shame that Turkey wont' admit what happened. It is a horrible genocide. |

| it is. it was the first genocide of the 20th century and set up the start of the Holocaust and future genocides. this is why it is a big deal to recognize it. Before carrying out the Holocaust, Hitler remarked "Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?". Many of the heinous styles of murder and torture that was used on the Armenians was also used by Hitler against the Jews. If we do not stop to recognize genocide and condemn genocide, it will continue. Darfur and the Holocaust are two examples of genocides that ocurred after the Armenian Genocide. The Genocide in Darfur is yet to be resolved. |

| System Of A Down introduced me to the horrors of the Armenian Genocide. I actually had a social studies class in high school and we had to pick a country/region. I chose Armenia because that's where System Of A Down's members descended from. I then learnt about this atrocity and how it was ignored for so long. Thank you LAC_12 for bringing this historical piece to us and showing us why we should care. |

| Yes and thank you for caring, System of a Down (besides being a great band, one of my favorite) are Armenian. They are apart of the Armenian Diaspora and they are kids that went to high school with my cousins in high school. Which brings me to a point that maybe people would like to listen to "P.L.U.C.K." by System of a Down from their self titled album (the cover is just a hand). Many of their songs are connected to the Genocide, but they say that art is for the audience to interpret for their own, so they don't like telling you what exactly their songs are about - but I can assure you, they have come out and dedicated P.L.U.C.K. to the victims of the Armenian Genocide. |

| It was an atrocity indeed and more awareness should be given to it. |

| Bush has upset me with his determination not to pass Resolution 106 (Armenian Genocide Bill) before and after the war. |

If you have the stomach for the brutality, there is a film called "Mt Ararat" which isn't about Noah. All the atrocities are documenetd to be true. One thing that makes the Armenian Genocide worse is this little known fact. It was cheaper for the Nazis to dig a big hole, machine gun everyone and bulldoze them over. Hitler's elite troops were to do it but they all became mentally unballanced or alcoholics so they invented the gas chambers. The Turks often killed with swords close up and personal. They had no problem. This is not a rant against today's Turkish people anymore than a rant against Hitler is a rant against Dirk.
A final bit of trivia. The term "holocaust" was coined by Richard the Lionheart after seeing what was happening to the Jews in England
ps. The Japanese have never apologised for their actions in WWII including but not limited to Bataan and Dr Shiro Ishii who made Mengale look like humane. Having African American/American Indian heratage makes me aware the the US has only recently apologised for SOME of the atrocities committed here.
End of rant |

so you should feel the same bit of anger I have towards Bush and more so to C. Rice. American Foreign affairs is not so pure, it is all economic based (using the term economic does include, but is surely not limited to cash).
"Ararat" by Atom Egoyan is a very brutal and violent movie, but when some Armenian Genocide survivors viewed the movie, they said it was watered down compared to the atrocities they witnessed.
America needs to wake up, the Armenian Genocide is unheard of by some people in America. I live in California, and there are many Armenians here. When California made it a standard to learn about the Armenian Genocide (very recently) some students were stunned that such a thing had happened. America needs to be informed, when they are not they make ignorant civilians, politicians, leaders, etc.
If I am in Ca. and my friends, with which I have been going to school for nearly 6 years, do not know about the Armenian Genocide, then I do not even want to know how things are in Wisconsin or Virginia or Alabama or Minnesota. |
