Because they finished tied with the Knicks for the fifth-worst record, a drawing will be held today to decide which team has the higher percentage chance of landing the top pick.

By Jonathan Abrams, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

It's somewhat of a tradition. But this year, the bounce of the ping-pong balls and all the hope and anxiety that bob with them will be felt twice by the Clippers.

Because the Clippers ended the season 23-59, tied with the New York Knicks for the league's fifth-worst record, today NBA executive Stu Jackson is scheduled to pull a ping-pong ball that will determine which club has a higher percentage chance of landing the top draft pick.

If he pulls a ball with a Clippers logo, the Clippers will receive an 8.8% chance of landing the top pick. If it is a Knicks logo, the Clippers will have 6.3% odds for the first pick.

The draft's lottery is May 20, and the NBA draft is on June 26.

    ------

Elgin Baylor, vice president of basketball operations, stated what was clear cut after the Clippers struggled throughout their season.

"There's a lot of work ahead of us," he said, adding, "but we're encouraged about next season -- about the future of this franchise. Because Corey [Maggette] and [Elton] Brand have stated that they want to be here."

He also pointed to the seasons of Al Thornton and Chris Kaman as strong points.

Both Maggette and Brand can opt out of their contracts and become unrestricted free agents.

Coach Mike Dunleavy said that in his exit interview with Maggette that he again reiterated that the franchise wants the forward to return, but ultimately the decision is Maggette's. Brand's exit interview has not been conducted.

    ------

Forward Paul Davis is running for the first time since sustaining a season-ending torn knee ligament in December. He is on track to play in the Las Vegas Summer League. . . . Dunleavy is joining TNT as an analyst during the playoffs. He will call Sunday's game between the Orlando Magic and Toronto Raptors.

I believe TNT hired him to compete with Craig Sager for most ridiculous suits. I am pretty confident some of Dumbleavy's suits are hand me downs from his grandpa.

Actually his commentating is better than his coaching. Please, Dun, it's time to change careers, for our sake!

Watching a couple games with Dunleavy commentating has been brutal. He always points out the most obvious no brainer stuff, and never adds anything insightful.

Haha ok Kyle, I am actually a huge clipper fan. And alot of clipper fans do not like Dunleavy, notice all the times he is called "Dumbleavy" on this site. I watch a lot of basketball, and much prefer other commentators, who commentate for a living. Coach D gets on TV a few times a year, if that, therefore probably will not be as polished. Personally, i think the Van Gundy Marc Jackson combo is good stuff.

I don't know how good a coach Dunleavy is, I really don't. He's obviously had success with certain of the teams he's been with, but he's had some fairly long stretches of ineffectiveness as well. One thing does seem clear... I know that NOBODY wins in the league without on the floor talent. The best coaches seem to somehow manage to get the players to buy into their particular systems, but there's always some superstar, or stars leading the way. List the best coaches of the last decade or so and you come up with a list that includes Jackson, Pop, Sloan, Wilkens, Larry Brown... maybe Riley, and now you've got Byron Scott getting a lot of attention. What do they all have in common? Great players. At least one or two great players, and then a good supporting cast. The true coaching was in getting them to play as a team, especially on defense. Ask Doc Rivers and I'm sure he'd say that he's pretty much the same coach he was last year, he's just benefitting from a slight upgrade in personnel. Oh sure, Jackson's triangle offense, or Sloan's pick and roll stuff... each coach had his favorite version of what should be done offensively, and how effective it was usually was in large part dependent on how much the team "stars" fit, and then bought into that style. But the bulk of the coaching seems to come on the defensive side, and then the details, the end game stuff, the plays after the timeouts etc. Dunleavy really hasn't had the luxury of too many seasons with healthy stars with the Clippers, so possibly the jury is still out on him. Possibly. He hasn't exactly distinguished himself so far, he's had a middling career record really, but let's see how he does with a healthy team next year before we pass final judgement. Certainly this year would've driven ANY Clipper coach to distraction. As far as commentators... I like Van Gundy, who's a lot funnier than one might expect if looks counted for anything, and Doug Collins, who seems to do more of the "I mention this and then it happens on the court" stuff than anyone else.

I was not talking about Dunleavy as a coach, just as a commentator. The big beef on Dunleavy as a coach is he cannot win the big game. We have only really had one big game in my opinion (vs Suns in 05 when we were up in the series and up by 3 in Phoenix, giving us a chance to go home to LA to close out) and Coach D made a questionable sub by putting in a cold, small Daniel Ewing who got a 3 hit over him. Who knows what would have happened if we won that game, cahce to go to the Western finals and really changing the public view on the franchise.

Either way, I agree, Dunleavy needs one more shot with a solid (injury free) team. We will see what the squad looks like in 3 months, and what he can do with them.

Yup, was a bad call but didn't Cassell start that process by getting that 8 second count right before that? That was a player error not a coaching error.

    * was that 8 second count during the same game? I am not 100% sure so can anyone confirm that?

I think it was. It was a game we should have won about 3 times, and kept giving the suns chances.

I think it is easy to blame the coach, sometime merited sometimes not. There are times where Dunleavy will call a timeout, and the team would come out and not run any semblance of a decent play. looking at the team we had out there, it may have been the players fault, and the fact it was a different lineup every other day, but who knows.

Yes i belive it was the same game. But still a questionable call by dunleavy. The only reason Im giving him another shot is because Kaman and Brand both benifit from him being the coach. And unless Avery Johnson gets fired there are no other d first coaches who have worked with good big men.

I read that D'Antoni could be available...It could be an interesting option although it would be a radical change.

No defense. We need someone who preaches defense first. D'Antoni is better suited for the run and gun.

I agree with clipshow, he makes a good coach for a fun up-tempo style, but the lack of D is killer. Does anyone know where D'Antonio came from, I know he was some sort of legend in Italy, but where was he before he got the Suns gig?

I think AJ could be a possibility, he seems to preach D to an extent, and could light a fire under some of the Clips unlike Dunleavy does.
