The Los Angeles Clippers today signed free agent forward Ruben Patterson. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not released. A nine-year NBA veteran, Patterson is coming off a successful 2006-07 season in Milwaukee, where he established new career-highs by averaging 14.7 points, 2.9 assists and 31.4 minutes per game. Patterson appeared in 81 games for the Bucks, equaling a career-high while also tying his career-high with 5.4 rebounds per game. Patterson shot 55 percent from the field last season, his highest field goal percentage as a pro. “We are thrilled to add Ruben to our team,” Clippers Vice President of....

Thanks for the news optimistic7292- and welcome to Clippers TopBuzz!

I'm a little cautious about this signing because of his issues off the court in the past. The Clipper front office has worked hard in recent years to sign high character guys. There's no doubt about Patterson's skills and hustle- I just hope that he's mature enough now to not cause any distractions. There's no doubt that he will help the team, however.

Hmm...this brings a lot of curiousity to my head. I'm wondering why this move was made and if someone will get traded or released or not signed (Jordan) because of roster limitations. Ruben does play hard and his numbers were pretty good last year. I wish he was a bit taller though to play PF effectively.

This is how I see it...

Ruben Patterson the self-proclaimed "KOBE STOPPER" with his stint with the Blazers was added by the Clippers b/c they needed someone to come off the bench for either Mobley or Maggette. I know we signed Diaz, but I believe he'll only play during the last few minutes of each game this season (trash time) Diaz might play the 2 but not often.

Heres the ideal line-up i came up with:

Sam Cassell=Brevin Knight/Diaz

Cuttino Mobley=Ruben Patterson/Quinton Ross/Diaz

Corey Maggette=Al Thornton/Quinton Ross/Ruben Patterson

Tim Thomas=Aaron Williams/Al Thornton/Paul Davis

Chris Kaman=Aaron Williams/Paul Davis/Josh Powell

I think he is insurance in case Maggette goes down and Thornton doesn't perform. It looks more and more like this year's Clipper squad will be based on hustle and defense. I like it....

So how many guys are under contract now? This might bode badly for Yaroslav Korolev's chances of re-signing with the Clippers.

Also it's kind of interesting that Ruben signed today- the same day that Yi Jianlian signed with the Bucks. Maybe the Bucks had a contingent offer for Patterson in case they couldn't sign Yi.

I kinda like this move. Since Eb will be out, the most important position is the PF and god knows we need help. I'm sure Dunleavy wanted another foward for defensive purposes to keep the back court solid. Although he isn't a PF, he can sure play defense and hustle. Guillermo Diaz will likely be the odd man out. I think his contract is not bond. If I'm not mistaken, he was picked up for training camp at a chance to complete for a spot on the roster. I'm sure I read this somewhere but don't hold me to that.

Patterson might change the scheme of things. It looks like we will be able to run more this season. Dunleavy probably realizes that without EB, we can't run the half court offense as our bread and butter. With Maggette becoming the focus of the offense, maybe Dunleavy realizes that speed might benefit us more. With the signing of Knight, Thorton, Patterson, and maybe JJ, we have become smaller and faster. Since we don't know which Kaman will show up this season maybe Dunleavy has a "plan B"...Just in case.

This signing will also add another element to the cross town rivalry. I know Patterson (Kobe stopper)will probably lose every time but it will still be fun talking about it before the games. As for Korolev, If he hasn't been signed yet, he is good as gone. I am sure Diaz won't make the team but I have high hopes for Jared Jordan. He can add what the Clippers have been lacking... a bona fide passer and play maker that can see the court. I hold nothing against Cassell but sometimes he tends to shoot the ball too much in a short period of time. JJ ain't as skilled as Cassell in shooting but he can improve with time. I hope he gets signed.

The way I see it, we will need another PG after this upcoming season. I'm sure that Livingston will take the reign once Cassell is gone and he's cleared to play. I really don't see Livingston coming back this season so I am predicting the start of 2008. I can see JJ coming off the bench and sharing time with Knight. Keep in mind that we have 2 old guys at the helm right now and I'm sure we don't want to keep bringing in players at the end of their careers. It would become a vicious cycle. I would prefer grooming young players for the long haul. I think that we have them now... just my opinion.

I know I will get crap for saying Livingston will not be back this upcoming season but that is what I believe. Shaun has been plagued with injury most of his career and considering his body type, I don't see him healing in time for this season. Plus, I would rather see him sit out the year to overkill his healing and work on building muscle. I just don't think his frame can take too much punishment in spite of his age. If he built muscle around his injuries and body, he could withstand more compared to the way he is now. I would hate to see his career end at such a young age with all the talent he's got. I know I kinda went off on another tangent but I think we can do without him this year for the sake of Shaun.

I re-read a times article about Shaun's injury a few weeks ago which led me to think he won't make it this year. I know I'm not a doctor but these were Shaun's actual words;

"Yeah, there's uncertainty," he said the other day. Dressed in a gray T-shirt and white shorts, he sat on a table at a West L.A. physical therapy center. He thumbed through Forbes magazine and poked at a pack of ice cooling his knee. "I have to remind myself that I've been blessed," he said. "I mean, my life could be a whole lot worse." The injury, he added, could have been a whole lot worse.

"This was a big wake-up call," he said. It "shines a brighter light on my life, the decisions I've made, how I live. I plan on playing again. The goal is next season, even though I know maybe I have to sit out all year.... Not playing again is a scenario that I guess could happen. Instead of thinking that way, though, I'm thinking more about taking my game to new heights."

Just when we thought our front office was in a coma, they go out and get one of the best forwards available. Jordan and Korolev had better start looking for jobs because there is no room for them here, unless they trade away William's expiring contract or buy him out. Looks like we are heading towards small ball. Other than Kaman, our offense is getting shorter. Thomas and Thorton are both taller than Patterson. It will be most interesting to see who we actually play at PF, and what combinations that Coach decides to use.

Would we still have the rights to Jared Jordan after this season?? we would right? That's probably what will happen. After decisions on Cassell and Livingston have been made, then Jordan may able to crack the lineup. Or, he will get signed and Diaz will be let go. Who knows...the season is still a ways away.

Here's an idea that just popped up....What if the offensive style the Clippers use this season is the type of offense the Warrior used. They didnt really have a real established PF on the team. All of 'em were undersized, but fast and took many shots. They provided high amounts of defensive pressure by steals and altered shots. What if we use the same game style the Warriors have?? Would we succeed?

I'm satisfied with this move...He's another player who can fit in our rotation. We are talking about a defender and an experienced player who is always welcomed in every team...

About playing the same style the Warriors have I think is impossible.Mainly because we don't have the athleticism they have and we don't have a player called B-Davis...Anyways I'm sorry for the Warriors because everybody knows that Davis can't play the whole season without getting injured.I hope I'm wrong about Baron but his career has been full of injuries...

Yes, they still have rights even if they don't sign him immediately. That's what they did with Diaz last year. So they may ask Jordan to play in Europe this season. The like you said they'll have better information on Sam and Shaun next summer and can make decisions then.

Patterson had his best season last year by far. Most of his stats were his personal best. I hope he can produce with our style of offense. I still believe Dunleavy will alter his style of offense while EB is out. I sure he'll mix the old style while Kaman is in the game. This will keep us from being too predictable just like last season. I agree with Miguel. Patterson is surely welcomed. I also agree that Dunleavy will not implement the warriors offense since he has always been a "controlled offense" kind of guy. But I would say he will up the tempo when we go small.

I am a little miffed by this signing: There'll be issues with guys' minutes.

But ... LAC now has a pretty potent bench again. I didn't think that could ever happen with EB and Shaun out. So I'm in.

It's all about Dunleavy...Be sure that if Patterson doesn't play minutes he's not gonna be with his mouth closed...Patterson isn't Singleton. We saw last year Dunleavy didn't give many opportunities for the bench players so...maybe this year this mentality can change and we could discover new improvements in people like Davis, Williams...

I think Patterson would thrive in an offense where there is a lot of ball movement. He's not going to stand there and shoot 3's for you, but he'll cut and get into good positions to score the ball. I'm not sure how much he signed for but it was probably for the remainder of the MLE (~ $3 Mil/yr?), which is a pretty good deal I think.

As for minutes it'll probably come down to match ups- e.g. against a strong small forward like Carmelo Anthony Ruben will see a lot of minutes, but he probably won't get matched up against a good post-up power forward.

Here's a guess at a rotation with this new look & predicted moves:

Standard Rotation (C, PF, SF, SG, PG)

Name (Minutes)

Kamen (30) / Thomas (12) / P. Davis (6)

Thomas (18) / Thorton (30) / Powell

Maggette (30) / Ross (18) /

Patterson (24) / Mobley (24)

Cassell (24) / Knight (20) / Jordan (4)

IR Brand, Livvy, Diaz

Cut Williams

Small Ball (C, SF, GF, SG, PG)

Name (Minutes)

Kamen (30) / Thomas (18) / P. Davis

Maggette (30) / Thorton (18) / Powell

Patterson (30) / Ross (18) /

Mobley (30) / Cassell (18)

Cassell (12) / Knight (30) / Jordan (6)

IR Brand, Livvy, Diaz

Cut Williams

This team can win if everyone is fresh. There are alot of good defenders on this team with little dropoff going to 2nd unit. I think they will be best with 9 - 10 man rotation. Sould be fun. I'm concerned this mix will play as a team. They now have at least 3 personalities that could be trouble under stress (Cassell, Mobley, Patterson).
