The Los Angeles Lakers have had to replace two coaching legends in the last 20 years: Phil Jackson and Pat Riley. The only time it's worked out well, the team turned to Mike Dunleavy. They're thinking of doing the same again this time. Dunleavy was contacted by the team this week and is said to be on the team's current "short list" to succeed Jackson, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. That list also includes former Houston Rockets coach Rick Adelman, who ESPN.com Marc Stein and ESPNLosAngeles.com's Dave McMenamin reported Thursday also would be a candidate for the position. Lakers....

Already said this as a joke about a week ago in a post, apparently there's some truth. Round 2 for Dunleavy in Laker Land?

Kobe would love Dunleavy. Imagine all the iso plays he would get to have.

I started laughing when I read this. After thinking about it the type of system Dunleavy runs could work well for the Lakers. He could run the old Cassell and Brand plays with Kobe and Gasol.

Shame that we didn't have the talent when Dunleavy was here, and he lost the passion after the Livingston injury. He is a pretty good coach, even if it is a bit of an old school type approach. Just he didnt care much and we didnt really have a good enough group to get to the playoffs to help motivate the coach into taking action.

I can't believe the Lakers are debating between Adelman and Dunleavy, that's like debating whether to date Jessica Alba or Star Jones. If they end up choosing Dunleavy, I'm laughing all summer long at Laker fans, more so because their team hired someone who coached the dreaded Clippers that they hate to be associated with so much.

He was a Laker coach first back in the early 90s, so technically it's the Clippers who had sloppy seconds.

How much more will you hate him if the Lakers make the playoffs and the Clippers don't?

Adelman W/L % .605, Playoff W/L % .503....Dunleavy W/L % ..461, Playoff W/L % .535....Van Gundy W/L % .575, Playoff W/L % ..500......hmmm, lets see now....who should the Lakers really be looking at.

dunleavy's an excellent coach but his system cant work with a team full of youngsters, prima donnas, and individualists. that's why we sucked post brand/cassell. baron's ego forced dun out.

"why are we watching tape and practicing plays? i wanna run! ive got a rep of leading teams to glory*. let me do my thing" - baron davis

*glory= 1 first round series win over dallas, absolutely nothing else.

With the system that they have now, they don't need a PG. If dunleavy joins the team, then they still wouldn't need a pg. Kobe will get iso plays for himself maybe 50% of the time, gasol 30%, and bynum 20%.. They really will NOT be using any other players

the Tri-angle offense will go bye-bye with Jackson and if the want to advance they'll need a pg IMO.....or Howard..lol

Regardless of who the coach of the Lakers is, if they keep the current squad they have they'll be able to make the playoffs and more than likely make it to round 2 of the playoffs. Lakers have a great team assembled and crapped out in the playoffs, so did the Celtics, granted the Celtics had more injuries but its the same story. Orlando had a great team too, and I figured San Antonio would be playing in the Western Conference Finals despite the age factor, they have easily one of the best coaches in the game, if not thee best, and a massively talented roster. Nobody is freaking out about San Antonio are they? Mavericks are a lot better a team than the Grizzlies and the Grizzlies smashed the BEST TEAM IN THE WEST in 5 games, WITHOUT THEIR BEST PLAYER IN RUDY GAY

small sample size compared to the other 3.....but in case you weren't being sarcastic: W/L% .463, Playoff W/L .333 wink

MD is not a great caoch. Anyone whos says that needs to put the drugs away. The man who drated the Russian bust? The PG needs to check the sidelines on every play? The ego maniac. Jim Buss makes the call? The end of the Lakers is coming. Aside from being the son of the owner, what does he know? Rick Ad. would bea very good hire. But they are old and what have 4 SM on the team. No cap room. A center who like Kaman spends a lot of time hurt.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the numbers for all of those guys look pretty comparable, especially with respect to playoff success. I'm not sure what you're getting at since, as I understand it, the Lakers are considering all of those guys.

He must really like the traffic driving to Staples. They want him they can have him. Afterall they need a fake coach so Kobe can run the team his way.

either dunleavy messes it up and we laugh, or he wins a title (or more) and we cry. But I seriously doubt the replacement for Phil Jackson would be DUN

If they get van gundy or dunleavy the lakers will be that much easier to hate on. Mainly cuz although i respect van gundy as a coach i just dont like his commentating and a lot of his views on bball and dunleavy has a ton of plays but he is just weak at coaching without running iso plays. The only guy that i dont want to see go to the lakers is adelman mainly because I love him as a coach and i really like all of his sets that he runs. Here's hoping the lakers pick up dunleavy! lol

I hope the Lakers get anyone except Rick Adelman. Rick is such a great coach, and we all saw how with a depleted Houston Rockets roster he was able to take the Lakers to a hard fought seven game series. Also, let's not forget that he ws the architect behind the Sacramento Kings epic rivalry against the Lakers early on in the decade. He's one of the best coaches out there and he could do wonders for the Lakers, which is why I hope they do not hire him

if you base it on this none of the coaches even average 50 wins which is basically what you need to get to lock up a western play off spot... dunleaveys puts him in at 37 wins.... so it doesnt really matter what his playoff record is
