The Nuggets have inquired about acquiring Los Angeles Clippers guard Sam Cassell, though trade talks have not intensified, a team source said.

The Nuggets have a sturdy starting backcourt in all-star Allen Iverson and Anthony Carter, who is playing the best basketball of his career. But with reserve Chucky Atkins (sports hernia surgery) out until at least mid-March, and reserve J.R. Smith playing inconsistently, Denver would like to have insurance down the stretch.

Carter, at 32, is playing the most minutes of his career.

Cassell, who played for coach George Karl in Milwaukee, averages 13.3 points per game in 26.2 minutes for the struggling Clippers.

Cassell's agent, David Falk, cited the reported ultimatum by Clippers owner Donald Sterling, who said he wants his team to make vast improvement this season or else the coach and general manager could lose their jobs.

"Obviously, Denver needs a point guard," Falk said. "But for right now (with Cassell in Los Angeles), everything is status quo."

I would really think about getting J.R. Smith for Cassell if it means Cassell is on his way out. I know he hasn't been playing well as of late but when the guy gets hot, he can do damage.

I understand that many teams could be interested in Sammy...He's a great scorer from the PG position and he's a winner. I think we should stop and think where we are right now. Are we going to play for something? I'm sorry but I guess that no. We can't win two consecutive games. It's so sad but it's our reality right now. One day we beat Atlanta and we think that the ship is reemerging and the next day we are beaten easily by one of the two worst NBA teams.

What I mean is that we are going to play for nothing so maybe we should free Sammy just because he has given us a lot of things and it could be a way to show him our gratitude

J.R. Smith? I'm not thrilled. When he's on he can be red hot. Shoots from range and is athletic (sounds like a SG version of Thornton). But he has slumps and has had attitude concerns in the past. For such a hot young prospect, it's odd to note that this is the 3rd or 4th team already looking to unload him!

I realize you can't expect too much in return for a 38 year old PG. But I would hope for a little more than J.R. Smith. Sam would like to play for coach Karl, though.

That would be great Miquel but the best thing is to have a win-win situation. We can't just let him go for nothing, of course.

Like ether I'm not sure about JR Smith either. I'd rather get a matching expiring contract + a first round pick.

If we give them a PG, we NEED a PG. They have no depth in that position.
