The guys on this board have stuck with the team through thick and thin.

From the days of Brevin Knight and Q.Ross and all the Elton Brand struggles.

If we land Chris Paul or Dwight Howard, there's no question there will be a huge influx of "new" Clipper fans.

And lets be honest, a lot of guys saying they've been clip fans for years and years but never made an account.

I think there should be a temporary freeze of we land a megastar.

Anyone else thinks so?

Let's not count our chickens yet guys. We will deal with the bandwagon jumpers if it goes down. We know who has been down from day 1.

With all the hoopla going on with free agency im going to remain calm until we actually land a couple of quality free agents. We have been let down by rumors too many times before.

Keep the site open to new users though for sure. Bring on the trolls!

I wouldn't want to deny any of the new fans, since I can somewhat relate. For me, and many others on CTB, my fandom started with that young and exciting team of Brand, Q Rich, Miles, Odom, Maggette, etc. and evolved over the years into the all-consuming passion that I have for this franchise today.

I remember someone making the point before that we shouldn't worry about bandwagoners. When the Clips start having real success, it will be something fun for the fair-weather fans, but that's just it. For the real Clips fans, we get to experience the most joy. We know what it's like to suffer through lost seasons and the constant jokes against our team, so a rise to greatness would be truly special for us.

Anyways, you never know... some of these new Clips fans will actually become diehards themselves and stick with the team long after Griffin's jersey is hung up above our rafters next to a couple of LAC championship banners wink

You just summed up the reason why so many writers make up trade scenarios for the Lakers. The Lakers fanboys eat it up, drive up site viewership, and they are as numerous as ants (or cockroaches?)

This.

But I also see OP's point, lol. Let's just assume the best and deal with the rest when it happens.

bandwagoners are fake. they're front-runners that have been riding the laker wave while it was high and took a break in 92-93 and 04-06 (since their team was inferior) and used the cop-out of saying their fans of Los Angeles when they started to root for the clippers since they needed a winning team to root for.

since its hard to label what's bandwagon or not since we're all different ages, here's a brief guide:

-if you joined during the norman/manning/harper era - congrats, we're both bandwagoners. but its faded through time and figure we've earned our stripes.

-if you joined during the miles/qrich/odom era - you're bandwagon. but our team still stunk and if you're still around you've worked that off (you're fortunate enough to join during the steady incline in clipperdom and havent really endured the plateau of misery called the mid 90s)

-if you joined during the 1st round of the 05-06 playoffs, you're at stage 1 bandwagon fan. take off that "clippernation playoffs" tshirt.

-if you joined because of blake griffin, shame. stage 3 bandwagon. take that blake/mozgov poster off your wall and google "eric gordon".

-for those who plan on joining clippernation if CP3 hops aboard. i dont even wanna talk to you.

i wanna meet the dude who joined clipper nation during olowokandi's rookie year. that 9 win season. big ups to YOU.

or the dude that joined during the richie frahm /frodo dickau golden age.

yall are pieces of work.

the only exemption is if you were a kid when you joined during those good times or if you were new to basketball and became a clipper fan right off the bat. if you were a fan of another team (especially if that said team happened to be an elite one) or even worse, if that team happened to be purple and yellow (that ish aint gold) then you're the epitome of bandwagon and may god have mercy on your soul.

*i have a good friend from sacramento who knows his nba like none other. had some good moments in the early to mid 00's but now his team stinks and he happens to live in LA. he ENJOYS watching the clippers but still calls the kings - even in their sad state - HIS team. learn from him, rookies.

but you're still welcome to post here if you come in good spirits and have a KNOWLEDGE of the game. lol

and no fair going for both la teams. i know we discussed this before, but that's lame. pick a side.

PEACE

I would say the first Clipper bandwagon in team history started forming midway through last season when Griffin was a bonefide NBA superstar. Again, I was introduced to basketball as a kid with the Magic Johnson Lakers, but also was intrigued by the Norm Nixon/Michael Cage Clippers. Those were the days when it seemed that the Clippers were in existence just to provide the Lakers with a couple extra home games, meanwhile replacing their aging stars with nice young talent. I mean, they traded the draft rights to Byron Scott for an over the hill Norm Nixon. Anyway, this is the first time since the Clippers moved to LA that they have a real following and a "bandwagon".

I am a Lakers fan, but there is so much Lakers news all over the web that it's hard for one forum to capture all the great info. This forum is awesome because there is a solid contributor base that is dedicated to the Clippers. Not to say that there isn't a huge hardcore population of Lakers fans. There are just a ton of bandwagon fans in addition because, lets face it, they are the most popular NBA team and rival the Cowboys and Yankees as the most popular American sports teams. Not sure what my point is, but as Clippers fans, we should embrace this amazing time in this franchises history.

Not to be a hater, but the Lakers will always be LA's team even if they were last place in the Pacific Division and the Clippers were the NBA Champions. It's like the Dodgers and Angels. The Dodgers have been garbage for many years and Angels have been an elite AL team...still the Dodgers are LA's team. The history goes a long way. That said, it's an amazing time in the Clippers franchise history and Olshey needs to pitch to Chris Paul that he'd be making history and not joining history. Hell, the Miami Heat are a no history expansion team and they seem to be popular.

I actually became a Clipper fan during the 98-99 season lol, (started really following during the 97-98 season) and was so stoked when they got the first pick, bummed they picked up Olowokandi and bummed about the lockout. My first year and a half of being a clipper fan gave me a taste of true clipperdom and it still was so much sweeter than being a Laker fan.

I actually got hooked after going to a preseason game at the Pond (Honda center now) against the Jazz. Had tix behind the clippers bench and the Jazz players just ignored me when I asked for autographs but the clippers players were awesome! I think I talked to Rodney Rogers during the game a couple times and Lamond Murray lol. Won me over for life!

Angels arent in LA so of course they arent LA's team. Its a stupid marketing ploy that made most Angels fans pissed.

If the Clippers became a really good team then people would abandon the Lakers and become Clippers fans because everyone wants to support a winner. Now it would have to a Clipper superiority for a few years not just a season or two.

We need to welcome the new people. This board was dead last year compared to now. People become fans for different reasons. If they become a fan because they love Blake Griffin who cares? Board is growing and so is our Clippers family.

Its not about where they started or where they temporarily were. Its all about where they currently are and where they were when a name change occurred. You do realize no one calls the Dodgers the Brooklyn Dodgers anymore right? Or that the New orleans Hornets arent called the Charlotte Hornets?

Not trying to hijack the thread but they still arent LA's team. They may at one point have been similar to the Clipps but they bounced town within 5 years, so they never were LA's team, imo and I havent talked to any other fans that ever refers to them as that and I have been an Angels fan for over 21 years. Both hardcore and casual fans dont think of them as LA's team and it still was a marketing ploy.

i became a clips fan after i saw game 1 last season, how can u blame me for that :p.

but to add to my defense, i always disliked the lakers! A bit less when shaq played there though, as shaq's awesome.

But yeh, we never had proper nba footage over here, now with leaguepass all is changed <3

I think that some people here are being unreasonably harsh towards potential fans. People jump on and off of bandwagons all the time, but not all of them leave when the team starts stinking it up. I bet that people who were showing up to those Baron games were still hanging on from that '06 season. It's just the nature of sports.
