CLIPPERS REPORT
Deadline passes and Cassell's still here
Dunleavy and Baylor say there were trade possibilities, but nothing happened.
By Jonathan Abrams, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
February 22, 2008
Sam Cassell is still a Clipper. And so, for that matter, is everyone else.
The NBA's trading deadline came and went Thursday with nary a move made by the Clippers.
The Phoenix Suns made a late inquiry regarding Clippers guard Quinton Ross, but no deal was made and no other talks materialized.
That wasn't for a lack of effort, according to Vice President of Basketball Operations Elgin Baylor and Coach Mike Dunleavy.
Both called the talks, which went up to the noon deadline, disappointing. "No deals," Dunleavy said. "There's no sense in talking about anything now. Nothing happened. It's hard to know how close anything was or wasn't."
Baylor said he envisions the Clippers' being involved in heavy trade discussions again near the NBA draft in June, when they will be selecting with what is shaping up to be a high lottery selection because of their poor record.
"We were out there until the deadline," Baylor said of this year's trade talks. "We tried to do things, make some things, and ultimately, they didn't work out to our satisfaction."
Clippers leading scorer Corey Maggette, who has been involved in heavy trade talks the last two years and can opt out of the final year of his contract after this season, was hardly mentioned in talks this year.
Instead, the talk surrounded Cassell.
He is in the last year of his contract and it is extremely unlikely he will re-sign with the Clippers. Cassell, 38, would be a valuable commodity for playoff teams, but he is now in a holding pattern with the deadline passed.
Several teams made inquiries on the veteran point guard, who is earning $6.15 million this season.
"I'm not to the point where I'm frustrated, but it just comes to a point with everybody talking about it and if it happens, it happens," Cassell said. "I don't mind playing it out. If I have to play it out, I'll play it out. We'll see what happens."
The next move Cassell could seek is a buyout of his contract, which would essentially be a divorce between him and the Clippers.
Cassell said he would talk to David Falk, his agent, and discuss his options. If he seeks a buyout, it would have to occur by March 1, in order for Cassell to be eligible to be on the roster for a playoff team.
Cassell hit his wrist against a camera on a drive for a layup against the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday and said he is unsure if he will play tonight against the Utah Jazz. Center Chris Kaman sat out practice Thursday because of a sore right shin.
Dunleavy said the team will begin looking at players to fill its 15th roster spot, most likely via a 10-day contract. "We'll be looking at guys for sure," he said.

| the clippers have not made any changes we had the chance to get a good player and we did not the Denver nuggets were given JR SMITH and why couldn’t the clippers get it done he is a very good player and we could have gotten him and give up Sam know we will not get anything for Sam. That was an easy deal that Denver had for us and why didn't the clippers trade Corey for a good player I am 100% sure he will leave this team at the en of the season because he is playing very good and different teams will offer him more money and we will have to worry about Elton I just hope this will not effect the team next season we need to get Elgin Baylor fire and bring in another guy who is not scare of making moves that is how Mitch from the Lakers was getting criticize and why not Elgin he needs to make a major move to make this team a contender next year because the west is getting very strong. |

Wow that's a long sentence bill It would've been great to get JR Smith for Sammy, but I'm not so sure if that was an offer on the table for a straight up swap. I'm sure that Denver probably wanted too much or wanted the Clippers to take on a bad contract. |

| One thing to remember...Cassell's agent is David Falk; the same guy Elton Brand has for an agent. I look for the Clips to end up buying out Sam so that he can sign with a playoff team (likely the Celtics) and get a karma "I owe you" from Falk. Looking back, maybe the Clippers should have let it leak that they would buy him out if they didn't make a move before the trade deadline. Maybe that would have upped some of the offers from other teams, if just to avoid the possibility of him going to Boston. Oh well, it didn't happen and now we'll just have to wait to see what happens in the next couple of weeks. |

| He hurt his wrist crashing into a camera man the other night. I'm not sure if he'll be able to go tonight either. |

| First off im going to start off by saying Sam Cassell has lost my respect. First he wants to be boughtout and then says he was misqouted. He said that its not fair to his other team mates for him to be boughtout and now he wants to be boughtout after he wasnt traded by the deadline. He is acting like Kobe. First let me point out we only wanted him for a 1 year deal when we resigned him but he wouldnt resign unless it was a 2 year deal. This is what i would do i wouldnt buy him out and i would not play him for the rest of the season. You cant be on a winning team all the time. I read in a earlier post that Cassell and Brand have the same agent so we should buy him out because the agent will owe us. Well, im pretty sure if we dont buy out Sam his agent will not screw us over on resigning Brand because at the end of the day for an agent its about money and the Clippers can offer Brand the most. So, if we resign Brand to a bigger contract that means more money for him. At the end of the day Cassell should have signed a 1 year deal and he would have never been in this situation. |

Cassell might be bought out

Cassell is making $6.1 million this season and is in the final year of a two-year deal. The word in the Clippers' organization is that it's possible the organization will go ahead and buy him out. If it doesn't, it will have to deal with a veteran whose heart isn't in remaining with the team. Also, there

hardly is any motivation to keep him during a season in which the team is just about mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.
Although the Clippers have been tight-lipped about its plans, there is a feeling that they will eventually buy him out.
Responding to a question about signing a player to a 10-day contract, Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said, "You have between now and March 1 where you're going to see guys who could potentially get bought out of deals. Certain things can happen. We're looking at all of those potential situations, and looking for opportunities that could help us."
I don't know what to think? |

Yeah frankly I'm disappointed in Sam. So we're not going to the playoffs but he is still under contract with the team. I mean you can't just clamor to leave a team once it's out of the playoffs. I do understand that Sam is in a special situation where his window of opportunity is very short, but he said himself that he'd like to play one more season after this. It's not like he's not getting playing time, so why not choose to leave after this season instead? BUT- if it's a win-win situation for him to get released from his contract, then it'd be a good move. He could leave, save the Clippers millions for the rest of the season + give guys like Knight and Dickau (& maybe even Livingston) more playing time. And it appears that would be the case.
Recently the Clippers have shown that they can win without Sammy anyways.... Still I'm a little disappointed. |

they said that in respect to what cassell has done for this team, they may buy out his contract in LA...he's had a good run here but i'm a little upset that he isn't committed to making this team the best it can possibly be.
The NUMBER ONE priority in the draft AND in the offseason is to get depth in the PG position |

| Our GM didn't do the work when he should...Cassell should have been traded for something before the trading date. Sammy sees that he's losing his time playing with us the remainder of this season. And I can understand it. He still has one more year but why wait until the next year???He has done what he had to do with us and at his age he deserves to be playing for something big. He's not one of those players who play only for the money...Cassell plays for the game because he really likes playing bball.Look, he's earning 6 million dollar. well, our GM only should have to go hoopshype.com and look for expiring contracts for the next season. the trade would be Cassell for expiring contract which could match the salaries PLUS A FIRST ROUND PICK...But we already know it's too late |

| Wow, what a night. First off i was at the lakers clippers game tonight (season ticket holder) man it was all lakers fans but still was great to be there. So, i was pretty dissapointed and upset because all my laker friends were talking trash but then i got a call from my friend chris and told me someone wanted to talk to me and it was Aaron Williams. We had a 5 min conversation and told me to come down to Big Wangs off sunset to drink with him. Lucky enough i was at Saddle Ranch down the strip and met up with my friend and Aaron. I got to say he is the man. My friend introduced me to him and Aaron ended up buying me a drinks. He asked me if he could sign my Clippers hat but no one had a marker. I told him on Wed. i meet all the Clippers players before the game and he said he would give me the game worn jersey. I asked about Cassell and he said he wants to be bought out. What a night. |

I think 1 priority is a reliable outside shooter. Last night's Laker game proves that. LAC did not make open shots from distance, Lakers did (kills me that names like Fisher and Vujacic did us is).
But we might not get a killer SG in the draft who will play the big minutes. So the priority should be to make a trade or signing move for a SG that will convice EB to resign. If that still leaves is with a high draft pick that could be used for a PG, then that would be gravy. |

| I agree with that, we do need an outside shooter, and if Mobley keeps lacking consistency at his position, that would be a hihigh priority. But if you look at the depth at the PG position for next year, Livingston (we don't even know if he can play!)would be our starter, followed by Knight. That's not too strong. |

It's about having good shooters but it's about having GOOD PASSERS too!!!Why are the Lakers so good??Because they are great individual players with a high basketball IQ...Walton for example wouldn't be playing for most of NBA teams but right now he's a starter (because Radman's injury) in one of the best teams.why? Because Phil Jackson sees that Walton knows the game.
It's obvious we need more shooters specially if we think in Livi running the team in the next future...And of course, no way an NBA team can have two PG with an awful outside shot like Livi and Brevin so IMO we should trade Brevin and get a reliable shooter from the point |

BINGO!!!!!!! we have a winner. You are so right about being able to pass and having a high BB IQ. That extra intelligent pass makes all the difference in the world. The Lakers & Suns have that.
I don't see that with our current roster. I saw a few good passes by the Clippers yesterday but overall, the Lakers just looked like they know each other's tendencies and every move looks calculating with a goal of finding the best shot. We look like we are going through the motions with no goal...just winding the clock or telegraphing who will shoot the ball. All it takes is one guy (PG) to infect the team and I hope we get him during the off-season.
Good post Miguel! |

| Yup you're right Miquel- we need a playmaker who can attack the basket and dish to the open man. Shaun is a great passer though remember that he was much improved in his outside shot. And now he's had months to work on it some more I wouldn't be surprised to see him because a dependable shooter. We definitely need a good point guard from the draft or free agency just in case. |
