An NBA source said yesterday that Clippers owner Donald Sterling does not seem interested in buying out the final year of guard Sam Cassell's contract. Cassell's agent, David Falk, has given the Clippers a deadline of Saturday to complete the buyout so the 6-foot-3-inch, two-time NBA champion would be eligible for another team's postseason roster. Cassell is being paid $6.1 million this season, and is believed to be owed about one-third of that total.
    more stories like this

The NBA source said the Celtics and possibly the Nuggets, both over the salary cap, would be interested in Cassell if he is bought out prior to Saturday's deadline. Both teams could only offer a prorated amount of the veteran's minimum, around $1.2 million. Falk didn't respond to an e-mail yesterday and couldn't be reached by phone.

Cassell, 38, is averaging 12.8 points and 4.7 assists this season. He has said he would have no problem backing up starting point guard Rajon Rondo if he came to Boston. Celtics general manager Danny Ainge has said he is interested in finding the "right veteran point guard."

Another NBA source said free agent guard Brent Barry, who cleared waivers yesterday, is still considering Boston. Barry also is considering the Spurs, but he can't re-sign with his former team for another three weeks. The Celtics are also believed to be interested in free agent guard Flip Murray, who cleared waivers yesterday.

Glad to hear this. Maybe Sterling is playing "chicken" with the agent to see how much of that salary he is willing to forfeit ? Only seems fair....right?
Here are a few comments posted on fannation.com and this move. These are coming from non Clipper fans by the way:

    wouldn't buy him out either.
Sterling is not my favorite owner,
    but he's not stupid either.
Give a guy (who is NOT a locker room cancer) millions so he can leave the team?
    Player Please !

The agent has given the team a deadline? What's he going to do if they don't buy him out? Please..

How is this. If Cassell wants out why doesn't he just forfeit the remainder of his contract? Why should the Clippers pay him so he can go to another team? I guess it must be against NBA contract and trade rules to do so but then again this is a league where Van Horn gets signed to $4.3M so he can be in a trade to the Nets when he won't even play a single game.

Poor little Sam Cassell, acts like a complete jerk wherever he goes, yet can't get no respect.
I predict no buy-out, back spasms within the week...

You should pay Sterling to let him release Cassell. Why will he pay him to go to another team? Idiotic agent. And you got the nerve to give him a deadline? Ha ha ha ha!

Thanks for the article CJ. Like ether said in the other thread I think this is a smart business decision by DTS. And I agree with the quotes here that say that Sam should just forfeit the rest of the his Clipper salary or even PAY the Clippers to be bought out. I mean it's not like he has a mega contract left- we'd be perfectly fine with him sticking around & paying him. Besides if he's gone the team may have to go out and spend money on a free agent point guard. Even though I support the "buy out" getting done I think the Clippers shouldn't need to pay anything to terminate the contract.

It's fair. If he wants to leave he can do it for free...but no way we should pay him any dollar.it would be silly!

Does 4 million dollars sound fair for a partial season with part of the time spent on the bench? Wanting more money only adds insult to injury. C'mon Sam, do the right thing and leave on good terms...we owe each other that much. I love the guy but leaving with extra money aside from the 4mil he has already is making me forget the good times. How much does 2 million really matter now? He will probably make anther 1.2 million for the prorated salary of Vet Minimum. This makes me think about an old interview on FSN when he said he has enough money and is playing for the love of the sport. How is the money looking now...Sammy?????
