EL SEGUNDO - It's no secret that Clippers forward Corey Maggette intends to opt out of the final year of his contract at the end of this season to explore the free agent market. Star forward Elton Brand also is eligible to do the same, although he is leaning heavily on not exercising that option.

However, swingman Quinton Ross, one of the unsung players on the team, will be an unrestricted free agent this summer and Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said Sunday that he definitely wants Ross to be back for his fifth season with the team.

"Of course I want to have Quinton back,'' Dunleavy said. "But we'll have to see what that means and what it takes.''

Ross is one of those players that every team needs, someone that does all the so-called blue collar duties. He routinely is assigned to guard the opponent's top offensive scoring threat.

Ross, 26, said he believes that he has been pretty solid defensively this season but said offensively he has not been as consistent as he would have liked, even though he worked hard in the offseason and continued to do so during the season on his perimeter shooting.

"He's a great individual defender, he's a great team defender and he's a low-maintenance guy,'' Dunleavy said. "He does everything his team needs him to do.''

By NBA standards, Ross also is a bargain. He is making $826,046 this season. At the very least, he figures to receive a modest boost over that for next season, either back with the Clippers or with another team. The Phoenix Suns were rumored to be interested in acquiring Ross last month before the trading deadline.

Nevertheless, he has a big decision to make this summer.

"Honestly, my agent and I haven't talked about that yet,'' Ross said. "I haven't concentrated on that. I'm mostly focused on trying to finish out the season and when the summer comes, we'll see how it goes.''

    Murray reneged

Dunleavy, who was a bit peeved that guard Ronald "Flip'' Murray backed out on a commitment to sign with the Clippers, said Sunday that Murray's flip-flop could turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

"In a sense that if somebody commits to you and they break their word to you, maybe it's not a guy you want,'' Dunleavy said.

The Murray saga was tied into the decision to finalize the buyout of guard Sam Cassell's contract. Dunleavy told Clippers president Andy Roeser that he had Murray lined up to sign with the Clippers, once the business with Cassell was completed. However, Dunleavy said a decision regarding Cassell would have to be imminent.

That was accomplished and the expected arrival of Murray, a jersey with No. 26 was prepared for him. However, Murray's agent, Mark Termini, instructed Murray not to fly to L.A. but instead fly to Indianapolis, where he signed two days ago, with the Indiana Pacers.

Murray recently was waived by the Detroit Pistons but the Clippers were committed to signing him for the remainder of the season at the prorated veterans' minimum of $1.2 million. Murray stood to earn approximately $300,000 for finishing the season with the Clippers.

Two ironies took place. Murray joined the Pacers, with one of his new teammates being Mike Dunleavy Jr., son of the Clippers' coach, and Murray happened to be on the same flight, bound for Indianapolis, with Pacers beat writer Mike Wells, of the Indianapolis Star.

The beneficiary of this was journeyman guard Andre Barrett, who was toiling in the D-League but got signed Saturday by the Clippers to a 10-day contract.

    Mobley ailing

Guard Cuttino Mobley was not at practice Sunday and is listed as questionable for tonight's game because of abdominal pain attributed to food poisoning. The Clippers already will be missing forward Tim Thomas, who is out indefinitely because of a strained left groin. No Clipper has appeared in every game and only four individuals – Ross, Mobley, Al Thornton and Brevin Knight – have played in at least 50 of the team's 57 games.

Hopefully Q and the Clippers can come to an agreement for another 4 years. His D is invaluable to the team, but he definitely needs to improve his offense for sure. He's become less aggressive than last season in terms of driving to the hoop. What he needs on offense is probably more of an improvement on mindset rather than skill.

As for Flip Murray- apparently he wasn't even man enough to explain the situation himself to the Clippers. As Dunleavy said- that's definitely not a character you'd want on the team.

Agree. I think Ross has been improving his shot as of late and I agree it is mindset rather than skill. I didn't forget how well his shot fell last season and maybe that is why I have been so hard on him. He is way better than that and I think he is slowly coming back to form. If Gette wants to leave I understand but Ross needs to stay and we better pay him his due.

The guys we need next yr are CK, EB, Big Al and Ross. Everyone else can go. Maybe we can even trade Mikey D for a large bag of sand. As far as Q's scoring---Remember Sacramento!!!!

Remember too Q had a clinic vs. Nash in the playoffs two years ago posting him up. He's definitely capable, but he seems to rush his shot too often this year (maybe in fear that he won't get another chance to shoot).

I'd definitely re-sign Ross, and give him an ample raise. Hard nosed defense like the way he plays is a lot rarer than a good shooter. Maybe his shooting will never be great, but it seems like they getting him the ball to shoot more often now, and that may start get him better. I'd sign him to a 5 year deal.
