http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/la-sp-erskine-20120216,0, 3222909,full.column I'm surprised one of you guys didn't post this sooner, but this article came out yesterday afternoon, but I'm not sure if this made today's print edition. Anywho, Chris Erskine of the Times interviewed a clinical psychologist about the differences between Clipper fans and Laker fans...it was actually quite comical. The shrink says that Laker fans are "realists" (the part I really chuckled at), and Clippers fans are "optimists", which I think we can agree on. The part near the end the of the story really made me chuckle too.. But Lee likes to point out that she doesn't believe....

I read that this morning. I didn't find much value in that article as it doesn't apply to me - I'm a weird mix of realist and optimist, I prepare for the worst outcome but I always root for the underdog, so I don't fit in that bucket. Only point I found interesting was how sports fans are less likely to be depressed.

As for how it applies to fans in general, it's too generic and uses too black-and-white a bucket to dump people in. This article basically implies that its definition of Laker fans will eventually switch allegiance as the Clips rise and the Lakers falter, since it's in their psychological nature to do so. I don't believe in that, there are plenty of die-hard Laker fans out there who would never give up on their team, but clearly the casual fans will switch as the Clips are much more entertaining for years to come.

I do think that most loyal Clipper fans who've stuck with this franchise for years or decades do fit in the hopeless romantic/optimist bucket - I mean, how else could we have supported this franchise for this long? But to make broad generalizations that this implies we're all prone to accepting where fate leads us? Maybe for some people, but I sure as hell ain't built that way.

I left some fun comments on there for the haters btw Wink

Yup, most raperet fans are turds. I've almost been in numerous physical confrontations just for being a Clipper fan. Raperet fans are almost as bad as Raider fans.nuff said.

FOR THE MILLIONTH FUC*ING TIME KOBE DID NOT r*** THAT WOMAN. He was never accused of r***. If you had taken time to do your research you would have found the sex was consensual. Before accusing someone of a felony, please know what you're talking about. He did something she didn't want. Rumor has it that he told the police it had something to do with her face.

r*** is a horrible disgusting crime and this disgusting accusation has no place on this board. While Kobe is a horses arse. He is not a rapist. He actually may have been set up.

Same here,,but theyried to make it sound that we optomists are sooo wrong and the "realist" Lakers fans are so right. If they are realists,,why do they think their team is so great,,,when they are not.

Aticle was lame.

And even though I am probably the oldest CTB member,,,I would prefer a guitar to a banjo any day,,,,but I would prefer Levis to Armani too!.

Why would a fan wear a Kobe jersey to a Clippers game when LAL aren't playing?

Answer - to them we are sh*t on their shoes. We never act that way. Chris Paul and BG to the Lakers? They believed it. Now they're starting to look like whipped dogs because they're gonna be our bit*hes.

Talking about this, from my point of view, I do have some family and plenty of friends who are Laker fans--certainly, even despite that I don't think of them less as people because of who they root for, despite my allegiances. My problem is about the ones that take their fandom to "hooligan" proportions, like burning-up our communities and act like a bunch of thugs every time they win. There's also those fans get on the radio, TV, and internet spewing a bunch of nonsense and lack the most basic knowledge of the way the NBA works.

There's some intelligent Lakers fans out there (maybe about as many as there dumb Clipper fans), but they're few and far between.

Yeah, I stopped reading the article as soon as I saw that. And I'm seriously considering lodging a complaint with the psychology board about the "psychologist" who as quoted as saying that. If that's her assessment, I'm not sure she's competent to practice.

That is called r***.

^ Glad you put that in context by including the quotes or it might have sounded a bit weird!

For the record, he WAS accused of r***: "The woman accused Bryant of raping her in his hotel room on July 1, the night before the surgery."

source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kobe_Bryant_sexual_assault_case

As I've said before, a married man and father shouldn't be messing around in hotel rooms with 19-year-old girls and leaving himself and his family open to such allegations.

No, its a societal problem. There were riots in Chicago after most, if not all, of the Bulls titles. Hell, if I remember correctly, there was a riot in Canada last year after one of their teams lost in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Wherever you have idiots that will use anything as an excuse to be destructive, you'll get riots. Its not limited to LA.

Hence I posted my comment on there about Lakers being realists with their ridiculous trade proposals. Even got a bite from a Flaker fan! Let's see if he has any real value to say (probably not).

Having said that, I've seen some stupid proposals starting to appear on this forum as well, unfortunately.

Lakers fans don't know what it's like being a true fan of a team as they simply haven't had any failure to put their loyalty and "realism" to the test.

Come back after 10 - 20 years of consistent Lakers' failure - failing to make the play-offs - (we can hope) and see how many are left. Those who have stuck by the team will have earned respect, but I imagine that much failure would see the Lakers lose >50% of their fans.

Clippers' fans who have stuck by their team through all those awful years are the only basketball fans in this city to have earned that kind of respect from me.

(For the record, I started following the Clippers in early 2009 when I arrived in LA, so I can't claim to be among that group - having said that, I've been a Stoke City fan since the late 80s and have stuck with them through a tonne of shite)

Vancouver was that city that got torched after the Stanley Cup Finals.

But you're right though about rioting; Detroiters rioted after the Pistons and Red Wings won titles in recent years, and they rioted in Boston after the Red Sox won the '04 World Series.

That's not ENTIRELY true. The Lakers in 2004 to 2006 was a good couple years of complete epic fail, and while there were less Laker flags in the streets, I still knew some fans who were loyal during their own dark days.

The main difference is that these guys rebuild so damn quickly, their fanbase doesn't have to suffer long. However, considering how bleak the Laker outlook is for the next few years, I don't think they're going to cheat their way out of the natural cycle this time around.

Laker fans are realists? lol thats why they all think they can get every superstar for nothing. Everyone wants to give up their stars for Luke Walton and Metta World Peace just to help them out. Anytime you talk about the Clippers doing better they bring up Championships. Many, not all have a sense of entitlement and feel they should get the world and everything in it because they are the Lakers. I'm tired of hearing about the Lakers and what their fans have to say. Hope they are mute when they exit the playoffs early(if they even make the playoffs).

Yeah, West Ham are looking a good bet for promotion and I hear Abdoulaye is having a great season this year - he's just a class player.

It's weird as a Stoke fan right now. We're still in Europe, BUT performances have dipped and we've lost 6 in a row. Not good.

The Clippers are keeping me going right now! Smile

^ The club did well to keep the squad pretty much intact after the drop. We've always been odds-on to bounce back up. I just want to do it with the title. If I had to choose, though, Clips for the Larry-O. I live in L.A. NOW!

When I first saw this article last night, I thought it would be an interesting read, but it ended up being pretty pointless in my opinion. I'm a Clippers fan not because I'm an optimist who think the Clippers are just unlucky. The main point of the article should have been that being a die hard Clippers fan is much more difficult than being a Lakers fan. I'm saying that all Lakers fans are band wagoners because I do know some die hard Lakers fans but it's impossible to say how loyal they actually are because their team has been so consistently good.

I love that we're going to have just one owner. Look at what's happened with the Buss family. The Jim and Jeanie hate each other and their team has no continuity.

Plus I like how much excitement Ballmer for this team. He reminds me of a Mark Cuban type of owner.

Well LA times have to say Lakers fans are "realists" because there are no good words for them. Think of one.... faithful... only for Kobe.... passionate.... when they are winning.... emotional... yup they cried a lot when they lose.

I need to look at the dates of the threads before I get riled up...IN MY RAIDER FASHION...this article was pure dribble except I do think we are some of the most optimistic fans and have been for a long time.

Some of the older posts threw me for a second. Guys talking about altercations with the Fakers fans and I am thinking WTF for, they are such losers why would they start crap. Then I realized that was 2 years ago before we turned the tide on them.
