The Orange County Register
LOS ANGELES - No doubt exhilerated and equally relieved at Wednesday night’s double-overtime victory over the Sacramento Kings, Clippers team owner Donald T. Sterling expressed his strong support for his coach, Mike Dunleavy.
After weeks over a month in which the owner and the coach did not speak with each other, the two had a lengthy telephone conversation on Tuesday afternoon, followed by a meeting later that evening at Sterling’s Beverly Hills office.
The meeting of the minds seems to have done wonders.
“Coach is a great person,” Sterling said, Wednesday night. “And he’s really competitive. He really does want to win.”
During the phone conversation, according to Dunleavy, Sterling asked him to present an agenda of topics that he wanted to cover. Discussed at the meeting where ways both believed the team can be improved.
Dunleavy said Wednesday that he feels confident that he and Sterling are 100 percent in accord and that he has the owner’s support.
“We’ve got to get better talent,” Sterling said, following Wednesday’s game. “Better talent, that’s the name of the game.”
Contrary to what has been long believed, Sterling said that he is not absolutely against trading the team’s first-round draft pick.
“Sure I would do it,” he said. “If the player we could get was better.”
The Clippers will have their own lottery pick this year. They also still are owed a first-round pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves, which is lottery protected 1-10, until 2010, when the Clippers would own it outright.

It's funny but good to hear from Sterling that it's gone from Coach is doing bad to "Coach is a great person, he really wants to win".
The pick is going to be pretty valuable, and that in itself may become a very good player for a good price. And the way the Wolves are floundering we need to value that 2010 like it's going to be a top 5. |

| Ok I'm a little confused. So the Timberwolves can hold onto their first round pick up until 2010? Does that mean we can get it this draft, next draft, or the draft after?....if that makes any sense lol |

| off topic I know but what are we doing with Nick Fazekas and Andre Barrett. The coach never plays them so whats the point of bringing them in? |

Not sure either but I think it means we can take the 1st round pick only if it doesn't fall in the top 10. After 2010, they protection is gone and we can outright take it. |

That's correct. The Clips got this in the Cassell deal. They get Minny's 1st round pick, but it is protected. If Minny is in in the top 10 in the lottery they get to keep their pick and the Clippers rights to it rolls over to the next year. If it's 11th or lower, the Clippers get the pick. But the protection only last until 2011. So if it rolls over this year (a certainty given Minny's record) and again the next two summers, then in 2011 the Clips get the pick no matter what. I think it's 2011 (rather than 2010).
So I hope that Minny is terrible for a few more years (although they surely would be amassing some young talent) and LAC gets an additional high pick. Hopefully by that time LAC will be successful and it'll sort of be a James Worthy situation. |

| Unless you can find a good deal for the 1st round pick, the Clippers' pick should be pretty nice this year so I would hesitate on trading it. |
