According to a rumor being floated on ESPN that quotes sources close to the "situation," the Clippers are planning on signing Bobby Simmons to a 10 day contract out of the D League right after the All Star break. This would be his second time to play in the NBA as a Clipper.

Simmons, who is 31, is averaging 13.5ppg and 7.6rpg for the D-League Reno Bighorns.

His best success came with the Clippers in 2004-05, when he averaged 16.4 points and 5.9 rebounds to earn Most Improved honors. But he has never played that well since.

I think there are other players who are lighting up the D league that would make a better signing that Simmons.

A 10-day can't hurt. He obviously impressed in his workout. I still hope Neil's feverishly working the phones with other teams, though.

Yeah, his contract would be up right before the trading deadline. Maybe he can regain his old form in a Clippers uniform. He had his best season here. But I think that also means they don't have an immediate trade working.

If there is one thing Simmons can still do well.... it's defense. I saw him give Griffin serious problems defensively last year playing a similar style of defense to Ron Artest. He's also another tough guy who will punch somebody in the face if they cheapshot Griffin (he's the one who bloodied Griffin lol).

He's not the ideal fit... but he's another soldier to help improve the defensive woes a bit.

My thoughts exactly. For a 10 day, d-league call up, I'm going to give Olshey the benefit of the doubt about who was the best player available. They may have felt that Simmons' prior NBA made it most likely he could immediately step in and help. But I'm still hoping the Simmon's signing is just a stop-gap measure before a more long-term move.

he's been out of the nba for 2 yrs. let's try out some new guys instead of recycling. is there anyway we can lure the spurs scouting team to come to lac. they always seem to find new talent out of nowhere

Don't forget playing with CP3 and Griffin he's also going to get a ton of open looks. Just knock down open 3's and play D and he will be a good addition.

Hoped we would of gotten a little younger and explosive on the wing what happen with Kelenna I would bring him in just to help him recover and be ready useful for next season.

adding simmons seems a bit lazy move for our gm and scouting team. i agree, we do need to get younger. there must be a young cat out there just itching for a chance

Just a heads up guys. A young team has never won a championship. Look at the history of finalists and you'll notice almost every championship winner is a top 10 and possibly even top 5 oldest team. I'd love a core of 5 that can stay together a decade but realistically.... Butler and Foye will need to be replaced eventually here in a couple years... and good teams find ways to keep replacing those players.

Not a good move.

Simmons is a veteran guy who can step in and capably take some minutes. He's not going to hurt us, especially given the alternative is Ryan Gomes... We don't need to try to find some gem and give him time to develop and hope he's a stud... This is an unexciting, but reasonable signing.

People are becoming spoiled. Every team in the NBA has a hole in the starting 5. We can't expect to go from lottery teams to a flawless team in one season.

Don't like the move. I doubt he'll see the court in 10 days. We were better trying out a young kid like Gerald Green to at least push Caron and Gomes. Gomes is prob at home thinking I'm better than Simmons.

Disagree there is a difference between wanting young starters to step up and then having young role players who have that hunger to prove something on a big stage even more so that can go beyond expectations without hurting a team greatly. Lets look at the past couple of champs and see that players 24-27 have helped them get over the hump with their contributions.

Dallas Mavericks-J.J. Barea

Lakers-Sasha and Farmar

Celtics-Powe, Davis, and Allen

etc

Every team outside of the Spurs had young contributors who helped put them over the top. I'm not saying get some super young player that needs to be developed but get a player who has some polish but needs the opportunity. We don't have a sound system at all and when our jumpers are not falling we are stuck in crap I just don't see a problem having a young buck that can go off once in and while because he still has his legs with youth.

Hell Clippers should know this better than anyone of having young players get up and go off on us. Would be nice to actually have one off the bench for us at SF I still believe Terrence Williams would fit perfectly here.

Simmons has always been a good defender. If he can hit 3 to 4 shots off the bench then he's got my vote to be 2nd sf off the bench behind Butler. Simmons can take over Gomes' spot if he plays well on his 10 day contract. If Simmons does play better then Gomes in that time span then we know where Gomes belongs.

It's not a huge hole that can't be fixed if we get some size at 2 guard we are ready for the playoffs if we can get anybody with a pulse to replace Gomes we are a contender. We don't actually need a SG to drop 18-20ppg if we fill those two things because we would have a back-up SF that could score and a SG with more size helps with matchups which means we are better defensively. Foye goes back to helping more score off the bench.

Y'all do realize that Simmons won't be getting any playing time and is solely being signed as an emergency sub, right?

Im intrigued by terrance williams. He looked pretty good his rookie season and i distinctly remember him dunking all over us when the nets beat us when they were awful. Seems like a kid that just needs an oppurtunity.

But for now hopefully bobby can impress and take the backup spot from gomes.

^It's only a 10 day contract to back up Butler. We still need a starting SG, and that is where we need someone more impactful.

BTW, I'm all up for bringing back Q-Rich. I became a Clipps fan primarly because of him and D-Miles. Bring back the headpound!

Q is tough and is a above-average defender. Plus, we need a shooter at the 2 spot and despite his streaky shooting, he'll get A LOT of good looks that I wouldn't mind him taking.

Gerald Green got the all star MVP of the d league. The same D league Bobby is playing in.

I'd seriously look at Green. CP3 will turn his head and career around.

I agree that he's being brought in as an emergency sub, but I think it's clear that most if not all of Gomes' minutes are up for grabs as far as the coaching staff is concerned.

Yep. There are younger, more athletic, more talented guys in the D-League, but if any of them had to come in cold off the bench in the last 6 minutes of a playoff game because of fouls/injuries, I'd expect an airball.

everytime someone signs gerald green after having a monster season in the d league he always disappoints. clearly the NBA isn't the right place for him. i believe lakers had him was it this year or last year on their roster in preseason and he didn't make the team.

The Simmons signing is OK to get us to the trade deadline, but this was the best part of Stein's blurb:

"The Clippers have been looking for extra shooters since losing Chauncey Billups to a season-ending Achilles tear earlier this month and are still pursuing shooters via trade after J.R. Smith chose to sign with the New York Knicks over L.A. upon his recent return from China."

Bobby Simmons signing tops a rasheed wallace signing any day of the week......Simmons is know for his lock down defense.............but when the clippers brought him in last time he turned into a great open shooter.

At this point Simmons will be a better back up to Caron at the SF than Gomes

and its only a 10 day which means if he doesn't fit they can just get rid of him

Simmons can also guard the 2 position against the tall SGs like joe johnson, kobes, vince carters, etc

I'm pretty sure someone has said this about Jeremy Lin. Haha

Preseason is preseason. We're talking about a min contract for the rest of the reason or even a 10 day look. He is young and athletic and can shoot.

He just needs a chance.

All of a sudden Bobby Simmons has LOCK DOWN DEFENSE! Watch out America, soon every Clipper on the roster will be tops in something and completely overrated!

People really need to get over the idea that we should be out looking for/trying so sign the "next Jerermy Lin." First, we still really don't know how good of a player Lin actually is. He's off to a great start, but we're only talking about a handful of games. Second, even Lin is an all-star, what happened with him could very well be a once in a lifetime situation. There are people who teams hire whose whole purpose in life is to scout players in the D-league and elsewhere. In general, if a player hasn't made the NBA, there's a reason for it.

I think people (like me) are just holding out hope he somehow ends up in the rotation and battles Gomes for minutes. Gomes is so horrible (and he gets way too many minutes) that it is almost impossible for Bobby Simmons to be WORSE than Gomes.

Well enjoy watching Gomes and Simmons brick shots for the rest of the season then. And if Green ends up being a player in NJ, it would suck.

I'm not him to put us over the hump and win a championship, I was just expecting an athletic two guard that can shoot and defend off the bench.

I hope the Clips are still looking for a real swingman after this Simmons signing. Lakers about to make a big move sending Gasol and Bynum to Orlando for D12, Turkeglu, and Jameer Nelson. Clippers need to counter that with a big move of their own. Lets trade Bledsoe for OJ Mayo.

that trade doesn't really make them that much better because having two 7 footers was their strong point.

You mean after Howard said he would go to free agency if the Lakers picked him up? By the way, don't believe a Orlando paper on this rumor. It's already been debunked.
