Watching the last Portland game their announcers were talking about Thornton being groomed to replace Corey next year, as if it was a done deal, and certainly on this forum we've been discussing the same idea. Now I know that by and large players tend to ignore a lot of what is said and written about them, but assuming that Corey and Al have developed at least some sort of friendship during the season... would this kind of talk, of which they are almost certainly aware, affect their play? With Corey I might not expect much difference, in fact he's likely going to try to score his max to impress whatever teams he might deal with in the future. But for Al... you think that there might there be a less positive impact on his game? I realize that it's a business, something of which I'm sure that they are also aware, but it seems that for a rookie to know that he's slated to step in and replace a popular older player it might be tough. Especially when you're still playing together.

Yeah I could see that affecting Al's game in a negative way. But I don't see how anyone could be positive on that situation happening. I thought our owner loved Corey and really wanted him back.

I'm not sure if there would be an impact on Al's game- I'm inclined to think there isn't.

But I'm not so convinced that Al is ready to be a full time starter yet. He will be ready eventually, but for now he's too inconsistent. If we can't come to terms with Maggette, the possibly remains that we might have to go for the likes of a Shawn Marion or a Jamison. Of course if we're lucky enough to get Beasley that'll take care of it Smile. And then we could let Corey go and spend the big $ on a free agent guard.

One positive that could be in play is that if the above were true and Corey and Al know what's up, then the coaching staff also know what's up. So, when Al goes into the game, he is probably given a free pass on what he tries to do on the court. Coaches know that young guys need to go out there, get minutes, find out what works, and also find out what doesn't work. They learn by their mistakes. And if Corey is gone, Al needs to learn quickly. So there probably isn't as much pressure on Al when he does make a mistake because everybody knows that it is a part of his excelerated maturing process. Also, when we see Al Thorton being inconsistant, don't forget about the players hitting the rookie WALL. Some players even hit it there second season. But it is especially tough on rookies who are pressed into service to play a lot. Jordan Farmar hit the wall big time his first season. So Al could be having WALLITIS some games, even though it is hard to believe because he seems to be powered like the the energizer bunny.

Yeah, I agree JamFan...Thornton is hitting some rookie walls, but he is a fighter that's shown he can play at a high level. Consistency will come.
