Lin Granted Early-Bird Rights By HOWARD BECK An arbitrator has granted Jeremy Lin his so-called early-Bird rights, which will give the Knicks much greater latitude in free agency on July 1, according to a person who was informed of the ruling. The arbitrator's ruling means Jeremy Lin will be able to re-sign with the Knicks without respect to the salary cap, for a starting salary around $5 million. The arbitrator, Kenneth Dam, issued his ruling Friday, siding with the National Basketball Players Association, which challenged the N.B.A.'s interpretation of the rules under the collective bargaining agreement. Dam handed the union a complete victory in....

I think he should resign, as well as mo and he and Mo to trade roster spots and put Mo at the 2 for the starting role he wanted. Then we can trade Mo for whatever good player we'll find. And Mo is worth more than 8.5 mil people. He's an all-star! Also what do you guys think of Gordon coming back?

Gordan wont come back hurt feelings. mo is nowhere near 8.5 million. We will get a true guard to start at 2 billups will platoon with cp3 and teh person we sign (probably allen).

I was. I'm happy now because we won't have to ruin cap flexibility to keep him. I think his chances of returning are now SIGNIFICANTLY greater. Now the only cap we have to use really is to re-sign Young, Evans for minimum... then match for Billups.

for the money he wants, EJ is way too much an injury concern....

I was kicked in the butt for this mistake earlier. EJ is a RFA and NO will match anything

By the way, thinking about this, it might hurt us in the fact now NY can go after both Allen and Odom for the MLE...hmmm.

This is not relevant. He already had no-bird rights, which STILL allowed the Clippers to re-sign him using the no-bird-rights exception (new to this CBA) rather than using cap. Eric Pincus had already repeatedly mentioned this. It's only relevant when a player makes a larger sum of money - but for a player like Billups in the later part of his career, past his peak, it's not really relevant. Clippers could have already paid him likely the salary he's going to want, using an existing no-bird-rights exception.

Can we use that exception on somebody else instead? say Nick Young?

it seems to me alot of people just wanna see the same players come back outside of mo/kmart. i can see wanting to keep young/billups and not wanting to trade bledsoe. that's fine But you can get rid of moe and gomes and have 12 mill to bring in a backup center(like asik)/odom and a backup sf like cj miles who will be cheap. Why would you bring back evans to play undersized center. you would barely be at cap then and can give either young or allen the mle and still resign billups. I don't understand why people wanna bring back a one dimensional rebounder when you can use mo/gomes to bring in a few people that can do more things then just rebound. But so many people just wanna see billups/evans/young/ back with no major additions. that is why we got swept in the second round to many one dimensional people.

a team of these players can be had with just as much money spent and by tradig the same two players. So i am seriously asking why dont you wanna make changes. i personally want to see the team go farther next year and thats not going to hapen if we keep almost all the same bench players.

dj/asik

blake/odom

butler/miles

allen/bledsoe

cp3/billups

Bird right also adds the fact that it does not count towards the cap.

lol anyone read the comments on ESPN involving this story? Knick fans think they NOW have a legit sot to sign Nash or Jason Kidd to a 3 mill a year deal and it will vault them to an NBA Championship. Lin at best is an average NBA PG, and even adding one of those 2 guys I mentioned STILL wouldn't get them past Chicago or Miami in round 1, not even Indiana! Knicks need to trade Melo and Amare.

Yes, we also have non-bird rights to Nick Young, Martin, and Evans. All three can be signed without using the MLE.

Where did you hear that? Any salary counts towards the cap. Bird rights allow you to sign your players regardless of where you are in terms salary or cap space.

Yes he still counts against the cap and we still can't go over the tax threshold. Even with this ruling it doesn't change anything. We won't have the money to resign him/young/evans until we move mo/gomes. or decide to not use the Mle. We are already 1 million above the cap. plus got to keep 9 mil under taxline to extend blake/cp3. So we realistically have 6 million to resign own players/use exemtions. until they are moved.

This is good, that means we can sign whoever we want with our remaining cap, then sign billups afterwards

Allen will probably sign somewhere he has a chance to start. Lamar wants to play in LA. So I think we have the inside track on NY. I think they will use "Bird rights" to sign Nick. And use the "Larry Bird" rights to sign Chauncey. Also, if we don't trade Mo now, we can trade him to a team who is making a playoff run, or has a key injury to a guard, right before the trading deadline. Chauncey will be back by then. And maybe we get a future 1st round pick or a great player for Mo. That would be a win win.

NY doesn't have bird rights, does he? But I like what you're saying. We do what you said, and add Gerald Green who is by the way the most underrated player in FA this offseason in my eyes, and we win CF!

I don't think he would fit in lob city as much as Gerald who can run the fast break and dunk strong off alley oops!
