Both local teams are interested in acquiring the Wizards guard.
March 23, 2008
Basketball News reported that both local teams will pursue Washington free agent Gilbert Arenas, which came as news to the Lakers, who have all the stars, not to mention salary, they need.
As for the Clippers, who'd have dreamed it?
Oh yeah, everybody.
With Shaun Livingston questionable and Corey Maggette available for a sign-and-trade, the Clippers -- who pursued Arenas, who's from here, in 2004 -- are interested.
Arenas, out since November after knee surgery, wants to return, but there's concern it's too soon.
"At the end of the day, that [not coming back] is the smartest thing to do," he said. "Let's be honest."
To be honest, he also has to show he's OK if he wants big money. The Clippers, if not the Lakers, will be watching.

| I don't know if you guys remember but the Clippers made a strong bid to sign Arenas the last time he was a free agent. Some rumors at that time said he had narrowed it down to two teams and the Clippers were one of them. I can't remember the numbers exactly, but I do remember that it was chump change compared to what he wants now, and the difference between our offer and Washington's was very small. So, he could have been a Clipper for the last few years. Will he be a Clipper next year? It seems that we need to do a sign and trade(Maggette) to get it done. We do have expiring contracts in Williams, Cassell, Ross, Powell, Davis, Parker, and Fazekas totaling about 10.5 Mil. But some of those players will need to be signed. If Corey opts out that another 8.5 Mil for a total of 19Mil. In a sign and trade we can move Corey's salary numbers higher but all this is based on Maggette and Washington wanting each other and our "committee" wanting Arenas. Who knows, only time will tell. |

| id be absolutely delighted to have agent zero on the clippers. altough we will probably have to give up maggette in order to achieve this, i think it will be worth it. i dont think we hve to give up any more players besides maggette, although our draft pick might be a possible giveaway |

I am 50/50 on this only because I don't know what kind of Gilbert Arena to expect "after" knee surgery.......
It seems like he has a couple of years left in his tank, but who's to say unitl he is on the court?
Another thing is......why would the Wizards want Maggette when they are loaded at the forward position with Jamison, and Butler?
It seems they need a back court presence as much as we do if Arenas leaves Washington |

| So why do they mention Livingston questionable in the article? Is it because of the obvious reason of his injury or because of the fact he will be a free agent? |

| Livingston is going to have to play for peanuts this upcoming season or have an incentive laden contact based on performance and time on the court. Likely he will be back with the Clippers because no other team will take a chance on him. The Clippers should also ask for a team option to keep him longer than one season at slightly more money if he doesn indeed come all the way back. Unfortunately, like Darium Miles, he may never play again. |

A follow up of Arenas. He said he'd be willing to take a pay cut to keep the Wizards from going over the luxury tax as long as Antawn Jamison returned to the Wizards. He really wants to remain on team as long as he's there. I'm guessing that means we're not likely to sign him...What do you guys think?

| Looks like he'll remain a Wizard... but as much as I want Habachi in a Clipper uniform... his salary would be way too high... we can get really good player, as in multiple players, with that kind of cap room dollars... we'll see what happens in the off season..... i'm liking Fazekas right now tho... in the game we're playing right now... he's looking solid...the only clippers getting some boards |

Agent 0 wouldn't be too bad for the Clippers...He would give us the PG we need as well as a 3 point shooter...Now some may think this won't be good for Brand/Kaman, but I disagree. He has Jamison and Jamison avg a double/double...so Brand and Kaman are capable of that on a nightly basis...
Could this be our answer? |

| Yeah I guess so but I really doubt he will be on any other team then the Wizards. I mean he's willing to take a pay cut just to keep the team together. That's great for their organization so I don't see how he will be leaving. |

| The more I think about it, take the money from the expiring contracts of Maggette, Williams, and Cassell and give to Agent Zero. A starting lineup of OJ Mayo (or whomever) Arenas, Thorton, Kaman, and Brand, would be a fun thing to watch. Let's geturdone. |

i think the line up would be more Arenas, Ross (if he stays, if not Mobley), Thornton (or Thomas), EB and Kaveman. Then you could have a rookie spark on the bench, a solid scorer off the bench, and then pick up some more role players.....
But yeah, i agree Jamfan |

| Generally I agree. But I'd rather see Agent Zero as a SG. As a PG, the other players may never see the ball! |

| I just want to see Agent Zero come to LA Period! I really think he'd be a great fit for the team. And unfortunately he;d have to play PG unless Mobley switched over. |

Didn't Arenas definately say he was staying in Wash? Much of next yr depends on Shaun. If a miracle happens (in sports they do) and he can start or at least play signifigant minutes, then the worm will turn as far as PG/SG. There ain't a lot of PG's out there. "IF " Corey leaves (50-50) we'll have the $ but if not we may have to bite a bullet to get a monster
The Too expensive line up (Sterling may keep #50)
PG Livingston, Arenas, Hart (a combination of Knight and Dicau)
SG Arenas, Mobley, Corey, Q
SF Corey, Thornton, Q
PF Brand, Powell
Cnt CK, Davis
Thomas fits somewhere between the cracks |

| Yes you are right, he did say he would even take less money to stay in Washington. That is a political move. There are only a couple of teams with cap space for a max player and only a couple more teams that can get in the higher numbers. There may be more great players available than there are teams who can pay them. It may be a buyers market. So Arenas is smart in signaling to his current team that he will take their money as well. It's the same reason Corey Maggette just might end up back with the Clippers. It's the same reason why we just might see sign and trades. Example sign Corey and trade him to Washington. Not saying this specific trade will happen, just the concept will happen. Corey for Shaun Marion for example, or Jason Terry. It is just a way to help two players get to the destinations that they want to get to and two teams get the players they want as well. |
