Hill will be the 2nd option at sf not Barnes!

2 deep in every position, 3 deep at the guard and SF spots, 3 swingmen off the bench, very impressive Clippers FO. Hill will be the primary backup, Barnes is there for injury depth.

Heat still have the deepest roster but we're not too far behind.

I put Barnes ahead of Hill because I'm wondering if Vinny Del Negro will save Grant Hill for the second half of the season. If right away, it'll be for emergency defensive purposes.

We remain weak at Center. And Bledsoe is our only real backup at PG.

Not necessarily. Chauncey, Jamal, Willie and Lamar can play the point. Any of these four players are interchangeable.

I wonder how many minutes Lamar gets.

He has to get at least 30 minutes a game to be effective I believe. We want happy & motivated Lamar from 2010, not 2011.

Wonder where he plays to get his minutes, because Blake is going to soak up most of the minutes at PF.

Also, who will be third string point guard. I could see four potential players, but none is ideal:

Chauncey (can they work it out so he gets a few minutes of PG each game?)

Crawford (he can do it, but I don't really like what I see)

Odom (definitely has the capability if he is himself, great handles)

Green (has good handles though I haven't seen much of him. They say he can play PG in a pinch)

I guess I'll answer my own question and say that Odom soaks up any extra minutes at PG (maybe 10 minutes a game). And that's where he'll get his extra minutes he needs to get to 30.

I see Odom getting 13 minutes at PF, 10 at PG, and the other 7 at either SF/C (which will actually be interchangeable with Blake because they will be playing side-by-side during these minutes).

Another interesting question is what 5 players are going to close the game?

I think you will want your best 5 players out there at the end no matter what, so it will be sort of a weird closing lineup:

CP3 (without question)

Billups (got to have his clutchness at the end of games)

Hill/Crawford? (not sure about this one. Caron doesn't usually close, so if they want scoring I guess they go with Crawford and if they want everything else, then probably Hill)

Griffin (without question, but FT% hurts a little here. Still remember that game 7 against the Grizz. Can't believe VdN didn't put him back in)

Odom (yeah, no way DeAndre will close games again this year, even if he improves his FT% yet again this year. He just isn't aggressive enough or enough of a threat to close. So next best choice I think is Odom. Unless we are playing one of the top centers in the league like Howard. Then I could see a hound like Turiaf in there I suppose).

What do you think will be the closing lineup?

Proposed Closing Lineup: Paul, Billups, Butler, Griffin, Odom. Barnes or Hill can substitute for Butler.

If Jordan improves his free throws (up to around Bynum's percentile), it'll most likely be Paul, Billups, Odom, Griffin, Jordan.

There are actually a ton of possibilities. But mainly, it's going to be Paul, Billups, Odom and Griffin.

Chancey will probably play some minutes at PG.I think we will see Odom take most of his minutes at the 4 and 5 and might rarely see him at the three but now that Barnes is signed we might not see him there at all.Closing line up would have to be CP3,Billups,Blake,and Odom with either Butler or Hill depending on if they need a scorer or defender out there.Barnes is a solid player but will not get more minutes than Hill.He might get some minutes from Hill but that is only to save Hills legs for the playoffs.

You don't think Lamar is going to be big for us this year?

I think he's lightyears better than Reggie/Kmart combined. In general Kmart sucked last year (and all the other teams agree obviously since he can't get more than the minimum and may not even get on a team this year)...Loved Reggie's heart but he was 6'6" and trying to be a Center. He's a gimmick player.

Turiaf has the size and a similar motor to Reggie. I don't really think this is a step down at all. Hollins replaces literally nobody.

I mean we're definitely stronger at the guard and wing spots but Odom, Turiaf, Hollins seems to me to be a lot better than Reg/Kmart.

Defensively and rebounding, I don't think we lose much with Lamar/Turiaf on the floor vs. Kmart/Reg. Offensively, it's going to be HUGE improvement.

^^^ Plus, this isn't a big dominated league anymore. The current NBA champions have basically no center and a scrawny PF who likes to shoot jump shots. And they did just fine. Aside from Howard, there really isn't a dominant big man in the league.

The skill, athleticism and versatility we have throughout the roster should make up for any perceived lack of size.

Great points^

We had 6'9" Martin and 6'8" Evans who can defend and rebound but only combine to score 10 points(if that). Now we have 6'10" Odom who is one of the most versatile players in the NBA and can score and handle the ball better than Reggie and KMart combined. We have Turiaf who is 6'10" and brings a similar game as Reggie but is taller,a better scorer, and a better shot Blocker. And we have Hollins who is 7'0" is also an energy player who likes to go for big dunks and gives all of his effort on the court no matter how many minutes he gets.

The Miami Heat won a championship with Joel Anthony playing most the season as their Center! The NBA landscape has changed, centers don't dominate the league as much as they did before.

CP3

Billups

Caron

Blake

DJ

6th man: Lamar for DJ

7th man: Bledsoe for Billups

8th man: GHill for Caron

Finish 1st quarter with CP3, Bledsoe, Hill, Blake, Lamar

2nd quarter starts with:

Bledsoe

Crawford

Hill

Blake

Lamar

3 minutes in: CP3, Caron, Turiaf, and DJ come back. (Crawford remains)

5minutes rest and Blake comes in for Turiaf. Billups comes in for Crawford.

That's 10 guys in the 1st half rotation

Ideal distribution of minutes:

PG: CP3 36mins Bledsoe 8mins Billups 4mins

SG: Billups 20mins Bledsoe 10mins Crawford 18mins

SF: Caron 20mins GHill 20mins Barnes 8mins

PF: Blake 36mins Odom 10mins Turiaf 2mins

C: DJ 26mins Odom 18mins Turiaf 4mins

I'm playing 11 guys there and I hope he does something like that when we're healthy. It still leaves a very capable Willie Green with zero PT and Hollins in street clothes.

CP3 and Blake: 36mins

Lamar: 28mins

DJ: 26mins

Billups: 24mins

Caron and Hill: 20mins

Bled and Crawford: 18mins

Barnes and Turiaf: spot duty

Only our thoroughbreds play big minutes and this should keep the team relatively healthy throughout the year.

This thread made me think about Barnes, Grant Hill, and Lamar....And how we are sooooo much better prepared to play the Lakers, Heat, and other good teams with big SGs.

Especially the Lakers were such a bad matchup for us (even though we could beat them any given night)...But Kobe and their size/skill down low were fundamental problems for us.

Now we have 3 guys: Caron, Hill, Barnes, that can match up and guard Kobe while also doing most of the things you want from your shooting guard. In those games Crawford and Billups have their minutes cut and those three guys all play increased minutes, many times two of them being on the floor at the same time.

And Lamar allows us to go big in those games at certain times matching up against a completely outgunned MWP/Ebanks at SF....And take some of DJ's minutes at C so at least Howard has to guard somebody on defense.

The more I think about Barnes. I still hate his guts actually! But it seems to me a specific goal of loading up on size/athletism on the wing in order to counteract what the Lakers/Heat and to a lesser degree because they're more well-rounded, OKC, throws at you with big ball-dominant scoring wings being the focal point of the offense.

If Barnes is added as 3RD STRING (still amazes me how deep we are), that's the kind of move a championship team makes which could possibly tip the scales in the playoffs 9 months from now.

Cassellmedia from Clips Nation made this comment:

"Will Vinny try a three-forward lineup? Depending on matchups, I could see a lineup of Bledsoe, Crawford, Barnes, Hill, and Odom being pretty interesting, especially against a team like the Heat."

I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THAT. It could even be Bledsoe/Paul, Crawford/Billups/Green, Barnes, Hill and Odom/Griffin. Butler could get some burn too.

So the question now becomes: is it possible to have a three-center lineup?

the thing with kenyon: dude wouldnt resign with us for 1 of 3 reasons

  1. we didnt extend him an offer

  2. he didnt like our chances

  3. he didnt want to play for the minimum

all signs point to #3, but considering the deficiencies of our current roster (and the relative success he had with us last year, coupled with his unfortunate inability to play with chauncey - the supposed reason he signed with us in the first place), im wondering why we didnt offer him something more than the league minimum - if we offered him a spot to begin with.

so it seems kenyon values a paycheck more than a title- and if that's the case, bon voyage kenyon martin. but im also wondering the motives of our front office.

VERY VERY VERY EXCITED... I see this years team much better than last years team... Bigger names too (Crawford, Hill, Odom). Grant Hill was the 1st NBA player who's shoes I owned. Good ol' FILA's . Crawford is going to be able to break people's ankles and drive to the basket... Only difference this year is instead of trying to make a circus shot he can just throw it in the air and Blake Griffin/DeAndre Jordan/Eric Bledsoe.. whoever.. can throw it down for him.. I see his assists going up a lot more too... Unless he's in the corner waiting for an open 3 point shot... Then I see his numbers going up... I see him battling it out for 6th man of the year against LO. For our team with Blake down low and Bledsoe/Billips/Paul handling the ball Crawford has the best opportunity to maximize his points. I'd say Crawford has a better chance for 6th man of the year on our team than LO. But we'll just have to see what kind of scheme Vinny the black comes up with.

In the regular season either Turiaf or Hollins needs to play some minutes. It's too much of a burden on those guys if we only use a 3man bigs rotation all season. Blake 36mins, Lamar 30mins, DJ 30mins seems reasonable and on a given night, it's our best chance to win....But I wouldn't want to wear those guys out or take the increased risk of injury over the course of 82games.

Better to give one of the two 5-10mins per game and try to keep our important bigs healthy going into May.

Playoffs start, we go to a 9man rotation with only Bledsoe, Crawford, GHill, and Lamar in the rotation.

I'd rather have Kmart than Turiaf. But he didn't respect the coach and in general he sucked. He had a few big games but he basically played well about once a week while he was here. Terrible FT shooter, terrible jump shooter save for a couple games. He did come up big for us a couple times but overall he was not a big contributor and just as importantly, he was a d!ck.

If CP3 and Blake wanted him on the team, he'd be on the team.

I feel you. I really miss Mo but he wasn't the happiest here because he wasn't starting, Randy Foye I know was great but I'm not missing him too much, he gave us what he could, couldn't really see him improving his game in anyway this off season. Reggie I really really miss but I'm glad that he has a three year contract, something the Clippers would not of given him. Nick Young I hate to see leave but we have pieces to replace him and might I add pieces that are less streaky. Now finally Kmart, I really was hoping that he would come back this season but after finding some things out I'm over it. He can end up on any team it doesn't really make a difference to me.

Now our current roster is an obvious upgrade to last years but I'm sure just like myself, we'll all be in love with the team we had last year, just for the fact that we made that huge push with no training camp. We came up and showed that we need to be paid attention to. We were the biggest underdogs and we showed everyone that we're here and for that I thank all of the players from the 2011-2012 season for giving it their all and giving us that push. I would also like to welcome all of the new comers to the team and wish everyone, past and present Clippers players, an outstanding season. Clippers 2012-2013, this is our time, our city, our league, our time, and our first championship season of many. Let's go Clips!!!

last years team started off hot. we had so much depth in the backcourt that we could rotate guards in and out that could shoot from the three, and that waswithout eric bledsoe. once chauncey went down the pressure was too much for mo williams to carry. we cleary saw that mo couldnt do what chauncey could, and that at best mo williams was best used in the second unit. caron butler also began to fold, he began to decline as soon as chauncey went down . i dont need to say much about the health issues that happened to this team. i think this offseason we made certain that we would be ready for injury or simply just a deterioration of ability due to the length of a full season. this zeason we got rid of williams and brought in crawford, a guy very similar to chauncey due to the hot three point shooting ability. we also bought in lamar odom to help out at the small forward position, so if butler goes down to injury or just has fatigue we will have that covered. grant hill and barnes are also good additions to the secoond unit...so when our starters are resting our second unit will be outscoring anyones second unit. this team is better than last years by a mile and we are covered if anything goes wrong
