Los Angeles Kings broadcaster Bob Miller might retire after next year. Both he and Ralph are the same age (74). I was just thinking, what if Ralph was also thinking about retirement soon? Who would you want to succeed him once he hangs it up? Brian Sieman is pretty good on radio.

Chick Hearn went until he was 85. Vin Scully is still going at 84. Let's give Ralph some time, and cross that bridge when we come to it.

Who knows?

Maybe demote Vinny to his old broadcasting position?

Ralph won't retire though

He'll probably die on the broadcast table it only seems appropriate

If I'm Ralph, there is zero chance I am retiring anytime soon. This guy has suffered way too long not to enjoy this ride. I would retire when Chris Paul does.

Have been listening to Ralph for 20+ years now, I think he has actually gotten better with age. Mike Smith brings out alot of playfulness in him.

Ralph probably will never let it go,,he is Vinny and Chick quality (or they are his quality) and those types of guys don't leave until they are planted. He'll wait for BG32 to retire then hand the mike to Blake. Ralph is a fine wine,,getting better with age.

lucky for us, it can't be mike smith. they would need to replace him with someone that actually can do a play by play because of the radio simulcast. mike smith can barely analyze, no one is going to expect him to describe basketball plays in such a way that a radio listener can visualize it.

The Clippers' play-by-play job is Ralph's until he decides he's had enough. I think if Brian sticks around long enough, he'll be the heir apparent; however, he's still a young-enough man (I'm not sure how old Brian is, maybe early-to-mid 30s) where he can work his way up the ladder and get a network job elsewhere.

If not Brian Sieman, I've always liked Kevin Calabro, the former voice of the Seattle Supersonics. Right now, he does a local sports show in Seattle, and play-by-play for ESPN Radio's NBA coverage among other things. However, it wouldn't surprise me if he becomes the voice of the new Sonics, when Seattle gets the NBA back (the arena deal up there is a done deal, they just need a team).

I don't count on Mike Smith going back to play-by-play (which he did on radio for a few seasons before he replaced Bill Walton on TV).

I love Ralph and hope he stays on for many more years but I have noticed in the last 2 years he has been making more mistakes. Calling the wrong players, wrong fouls, saying "on his left" when meaning "on his right".... little things like that. I think he is sadly losing his step a little, which is something that comes with age. With that being said, he is a legend and it would just feel wrong listening to someone else on the TV broadcast.

Brian Sieman is pretty good though, probably one of the best radio play by play guys i've heard. He paints the game action very well.

Ralph is a lifetime appointment, like a Supreme Court Justice... but if and when he decides to hang up his hand-held microphone, he should be broadcaster emeritus of all things Clippers, coming back for segments whenever he wants.

That said, I have been very impressed by Sieman's passion for the team... especially during the great comeback.

Ralph is as diehard a Clipper fan as any of us and has been through a LOT. I don't see him leaving the team until God forces him to. Until then, Ralph is going to enjoy getting paid for front and center tickets to what I'm sure in his mind is the best show on earth.

I really dig the love for Ralph on this board. He's goofy, not always real observant, sometimes provides remarkably unsophisticated analysis given how long he has been around the game, but he is and always will be the #1 Clipps fan. He is more like Harry Carey than Vin Scully, but he's all ours and I would not trade him for anyone. He will be a tough act to follow.

I would love for Blake and DJ to be our permanent play-by-play team after they retire... They would probably play around too much and make themselves look like a bunch of clowns but I wouldn't want it any other way. As for Ralph; Would not surprise me if Ralph keeps on going until he's on his death bed, and despite his age, that would probably be at least another decade of Ralph and Mike... Then turns into Blake and DJ... "Blake and DJ" has a great ring to it.

What's with all the Mike Smith hate? He's a fantastic analyst, and as much as I love Ralph, I think he'd be stranded on an island all game if it weren't for Mike's quiet input throughout the game.

i agree. mike smith knows how to analyze the game. one of the best in the business imo. calls it like he sees it. plus the banter between him and ralph is often times hilarious and entertaining. 1000000000 times better than stu "defination of a homer" lantz.

Ralph is awesome, and I think we all forget or didn't know how old he actually was. I really, really cannot stand Mike Smith at all. I cringe whenever he talks, and I almost want to punch him in the head at times if I ever saw him for being a douche.

We can't all have the greatest announcers for every single team we love, but Walton wouldn't be the main guy I think if he was here. He's older and more senile than he was before. It'd really be nice if we actually brought back a Clipper from years past. I'd be up for Brent Barry to be given a shot if they can steal him away from NBA TV, but I am pretty positive Rick Mahorn does radio work for the Pistons still, I think.

If Mike Smith takes over, I will mute all Clipper games and listen to music in the background.

I don't mean to even mention the Lakers here on Clippers Top Buzz but watching a Clips game and listening to the man, the myth, the legend's dulcet tones call the game (and I'm talking about RALPH LAWLER here) makes me so happy to NOT be a Laker fan. Those jerks calling the game over there on (thank GOD) a channel I don't get/want are like broken glass and nails on a chalk board. Dumb meets boring meets blah. Lawler's Law is one of the best calls in all of sports (it's the law) and between Bingo on the 3 and Oh Me Oh My and Holy Smokers on just about everything else Lawler is laying it down. And ain't it sweet we have Blake ESPN Presents Griffin and Deandre Houston We Have a Highlight Jordan to keep Ralph waxing prolific. Clippers Championship Season Starts Tomorrow Night

When the Clippers have games on TNT I like to watch those to see what Reggie,Webber,Barkley,Kenny,Shaq, etc have to say about the Clippers.During the Nuggets game on TNT it was cool to see Reggie shout out Mike and Ralph. If someone can find the clip please post it.

I love what Ralph brings to the game and what he has done for the franchise. Absolute Legend.

But if I was listening to that last game against the Jazz on the radio, I would have been so confused, because about 25% of the time he was calling players by the wrong name and on multiple occasions used the same name for different players involved in a play IE: Griffin passes to Griffin etc.

I would love to see someone get groomed under Ralph who provides more than the lame commentary we get from Mike Smith. I swear every game he makes some ridiculous statement or cant believe the statistics before him. Its called being a professional and doing your research.

And to those calling for Bill Walton... if you think Mike Smith is bad, Bill Walton consistently compared Michael Olowokandi and Brian Skinner to HOF big men, lol.

The thing with Bill Walton is that even though he sounded serious with a lot of what he said, it was really all tounge-in-cheek. You get him away from the shtick, Walton knew his stuff.

i dont know about that one. I think people look back and think there is no way he was serious, but I truly believe he was. He has a lot of hoops knowledge but was so over the top I could barely stand it, and this was him describing our own team. He was the same way on national broadcasts too, so i think it was just the way he communicated or he was still in his hippie days tripping out, lol.

Ralph was starting to lose it the past two seasons. This year already it seems like he is lost sometimes. I'd still rather Ralph was calling the games, even not knowing all the players names, than some run of the mill Kiki-type.

I have a feeling this is his last season. He knows and the network knows that he's having trouble. Sucks but dude is getting up there in age.
