As many of you guys know, I've been a DJ detractor for years but he's finally won me over with his newly added post moves. Still has a ways to go but I've seen enough to finally give him his due.

carry on...

Very Happy

Even if he doesn't maintain quite this level no question he improved more than amybody on the team which is HUGE considering he was our weak link last year.

If he can maintain a similar level(doesn't have to be as high) in regular season and postseason we will be a lot better than last season. If BG and DJ can hit free throws at 60% we would be even better!

One of the more underrated things he has worked on is his defense. In years past, he was always been terrible on defense. Now, he's much more smarter and aware. Just look at both Jazz games. He played Jefferson beautifully.

Agree with Battlegun that it's actually his defense I'm noticing the most at times. Jefferson usually MURDERS him and not once did DJ leave the floor like an idiot on a fake. Battlegun is right that he's been defending beautifully. I always hear coaches and teammates screaming "Stay on the ground!!!" to DJ during the game.

Oh dang you guys know something funny? Remember Jerry West blasted the idea of GS offering DJ that kind of money? Then DJ proceeds to sh** on Warriors tonight in 3 quarters with West in the building. I bet West didn't think he would develop this kind of arsenal.

Dj was a total player tonight. I hope this was not a fluke and he continues to improve.

GREAT JOB DJ

Yeah good point. If DJ plays like this, average maybe 13, 9 and 2 his contract would certainly be a pretty good value compared to what some of the other centers are making. I just wish his free throws will improve. He can potentially average 15+ if he manages 60% at the line. It should improve over time- he has a new form for FT shooting, and often times in sports, in order to take a step forward, you have to take 2 steps back to improve.

In addition to his newly developed skill and aggression on offense, he seems to be playing smarter too on both ends of the floor. He's cutting to the hoop quicker and making himself available for the pass better, and on defense he's doing a better job not going for the pump fakes as much. Rebounding-wise he seems to be doing a little better too boxing out.

Nicely put. Yeah, I never put much thought into it until you mentioned it. I haven't complained once about that so you're right.

Seriously though, I haven't had one bad thing to say about him thus far. I'm just happy he came into this season with a sweet baby hook. He's hit some hard baseline hooks that have amazed me. So yeah, those guys that said it would take 4-5 years for DJ, this one is for you. wink

Excuse me, that noise you heard was me choking on some crow with mango salsa. Embarassed

Thate said it will take SOME time, I guess he meant SOME time indeed, but DJ is already shooting better than in the beginning of the preseason!

You know what impress me the most about DJ was his maturity and be the student of the game. You know DJ could always mail it in after receiving a fat $10 million contract instead he work even harder to improve his game. That is something really rare in these league today. DJ is also the most undervalue guy among Clippers fans. Instead of asking to trade DJ, think any center that would be an improvement over DJ. Not many. I'm glad Clippers trade Kaman instead of DJ. DJ will someday be the force both end of the court.

DJ is playing with incredible confidence. i was thinking that he would average 10 and 10 with 3 blocks this season. i wouldnt be surprised if he averages 12 to 13 ppg and 10 boards with 3 to 4 blocks a game. what makes the clippers even more threatening is that if dj gets to 60 percent at the line and griffin shoots close to 70 percent at the foul line, the clips can win the title. no joke

So happy to see DJ's improvement. If he keeps this level of play up, he might even out shine Griffin o.o I hope next offseason DJ and Blake hook up with Hakeem. I could only imagine how dangerous of a post tandem they'd make after picking up moves from him. If only the could hit their damn free throws!!! >.<

I have this theory with Jordan, and practically any of the Clipper bigs (except for maybe Hollins and Odom). On Mason & Ireland yesterday, one caller explained that centers have big hands which prove useful for rebounding and blocking but not shooting. Another caller suggested that big men who lived in the paint were never trained to be shooters. Look at Dirk Nowitzki and Pau Gasol. Both players are exceptions because while playing in Europe, big men were asked to even play at guard sometimes.

I'm afraid the Clippers are just going to have to live with the fact that they have bad free throw shooters, and that there's nothing they can do about it. But the one thing they shouldn't do is let those free throws get to them. Right after Griffin missed his two free throws, he made up for those misses by playing defense: first, by blocking Tyler's shot and second, trapping Tyler in a bad pick-n-roll spot, forcing a turnover. John Ireland even brought up an old Shaq quote, that when there's a game on the line, he'll make those free throws count, even if it's only one of two. One thing DJ has done a little more in the past few preseason games was drawing fouls. He's not being asked to be a perfect scorer, just remain aggressive so that the Clippers can get into the bonus early, making it much easier for the other players with a better free throw percentage (Billups, Paul, Butler, Crawford, Bledsoe, Barnes, Hill, Green) to make those shots down the stretch.

Both Griffin and Jordan should continue to play the way they've always played. In Jordan's case, he should accept his weaknesses and use his defensive potential as a tradeoff. If he can continue to value himself and believe in his abilities, the Clippers could be poised to make a deep playoff run... maybe even use the Laker's own medicine against them.

Last season dont forget Jordan had an FT shooting 0.525 that was okay, only the playoff games were the big problem.

Last season he head 7.4 PPG, 8.3 RPG and 2.0 blocks

Currently Preason is 13.5 PPG , 9.3 RPG and 2.2 blocks

I predict this season: 12.0 PPG, 9.0 RPG and 2.1 blocks, if he shoots 0.5 FT, that would be a huge improvement.

Tim Duncan for example had last season:

15.4 PPG, 9.0 RPG and 1.5 blocks

Interesting stat. DJ is leading the preseason in FG% but also leading the lead in lowest FT %. BG has the second lowest FT% this preseason Sad.

I think a more realistic scenario is something like 15 ppg, 11 rpg, 2bpg! He had no post game last season, and he'll get to the line more now with his aggresive paint play!

Went to the game, really like the confidence DJ is showing, and the results. The ripple effect from his improved game will be HUGE. Wish his hands were a little softer but it is what it is.

He can definitely get those stats if he gets enough playing time.

Personally I am thinking 14/10/2.5

one of the great things about DJ's improved offense is the fact that he'll be drawing double teams which will put a load off Blake and CP3. this will help with better ball movement, floor spacing, open 3's, and open jump shots; especially with Blake's refined J.

if he plays even near last night, I am so stoked. It was never that he didnt have the potential but he was too timid and I honestly believe not working hard enough especially on the fundamentals. Last night the beast was unleashed. If he plays like that we are going to be a serious force to be reckoned with.

8) i think part of dj's improvement is that he has some of his FINANCIAL DUCKS in order now since the hectic short season has passed and now he and the team are back to....

D-12 is a finesse player he really isnt physical. Also dwight looks a lot shorter then I realized. Gasol looks way taller then him.

I've always been in the camp that knew He was much better than most people actually believed. Obviously he has areas in his game that need improvement, as with most players, but I liked his advanced matrix numbers a lot. I believe this is going to be a break out year in that regards....19+PER, 9+WP, .175 WS/48. We shall soon see.

I've always kept my patience with DJ and not only is it starting to look like we got him cheap, but we really got a steal getting him in the 2nd round. I have a good feeling that if he keeps this kind of game up, we'll be looking at an all star center sooner than later.

Agreed. Howard is slow and methodical when he makes a move. One of the reasons why I started this thread was when I saw DJ score his first basket, first basket of the game last night, he looked decisive . I saw Howard make a similar hook and he looked slow and mechanical. DJ doesn't look mechanical anymore. DJ just looks like those shots are now second nature.

Like others have said, Wednesday should show us just how confident he is now.

I've always believed DJ could bring his game to the next level because he's always shown it in flashes. Combine that with a developed work ethic (if your best friend is Blake Griffin, you're going to work your ass off!) and leadership (CP3)... it was just a matter of time before he broke through. Big props to Iavaroni too for helpling him develop the specific 1-2 post moves with counters.

Honestly, he poses skills that very few centers have in the league. He's a freak of nature and can jump out of the gym. He is ambidextrous and can do a baby hook or slam it home with either hand. And now he's learning the little things like better footwork, increased awareness, far fewer 3 sec. violations, and more efficient handling of the ball.

Consider last night's... Blake's high low pass from the elbow to DJ for the slam. Well, in the past, DJ would've caught the ball, gathered himself and brought the ball down low (or dribble it), and then try to dunk it before getting fouled. Last night, he caught the ball at his chest, and in one motion immediately extended his arms and elevated for the jam before the Warriors' big could do anything.

I don't expect him to be that consistent, yet... and he may struggle against Dwight on Wed. because he historically does. The point is for him to stay encouraged and keep developing during the season... because the opportunity is there to make a huge impact in our playoff run.

I think one thing that can help DJ is if Blake finds him and passes the ball. DJ doesnt quite have the insticnt for finding his own shot as well as Blake can, so he needs to be fed the ball.

It's gonna be hard for him to get mins. with this team's depth. I still feel like Trey still have get his physical growing to do. Get stronger and bigger so that he won't get bullied in the paint.

Nice to see DJ actually resemble a post game. He's a huge x-factor for us. If he really improves on his post game and defense, he will take us up another notch.
