Tim Thomas Now Officially A Clipper

    Announcements
    JamFan

With the loss of Vlad Rad to the LA Lakers, the Clippers turned their eyes toward a more than suitable replacement, officially signing Tim Thomas to a reported 4 year deal using their mid level exemption.

The Clippers traded Chris Wilcox for Vlad Rad just last season to bring in an outside shooter. Vlad was more than competent from 3 point range, and when he bolted to the Lakers, the Clippers found that they still had the same need, a long range bomber.

Tim Thomas' numbers and shooting percentages are very similar to Vlad's. Unlike Vlad, he didn't seem to mind coming off the bench. During the playoffs, Tim's numbers and shooting percentages actually increased. Off the bench, in limited minutes, he average 15.1 PPG, 6.3 RPG, and shot 44% from the 3. It seemed like every time the going got tough for the Suns, he would come in and and make the tough shots, including a couple that literally were game savers for them.

Thomas was rated higher than Vlad in free agent rankings mainly because he can also post up and play like a power forward, and he is a better defender than Vlad.

The two players both signed for the same money except the Thomas 4 year deal is reportedly one year shorter than Vlads. It appears the Clippers got a better player for the same money.

So, the Clippers hold court. They lost a good player but replaced him with a slightly better player. It remains to be seen how well he will fit into the Dunleavy system. Coach seems to have no reservations about how well he will fit in.

    Clippers Workout Few For Draft

Posted by: jamfan on Sunday, June 04, 2006 - 08:32 PM
    Announcements
ALERT: CLIPPERS HAVE WORKED OUT PG BOBBY BROWN, FULLERTON STATE. ANOTHER PLAYER IN THEIR OWN BACKYARD SLATED AS A 2ND ROUND PICK.

Maybe it is just because they do not have a draft pick until early in the second round. Or just maybe they already know who they are going to pick in the 35th position........hmmmmm. If they are just going through the motions, my guess it is because their target is a player coming out of Europe.

But it is hard to gleam anything out of the workout schedule the Clippers have displayed so far. Other than Jordan Farmar and Aaron Afflalo who were already in their backyard, they have only worked out 3 players.

The three players are all shooting guards who have been playing here in the good ole USA. That is how you know for sure that they are going to draft a center, forward, or point guard out of Europe. It is the old mis-direction play.

Anyway, we have a workout with James "Flight" White, a senior from Cincinnati, Thomas Gardner, a junior from Missouri, and Richard Roby, a sophomore from Colorado. These guys are certainly not household names in college basketball. "Flight" is the highest rated and best known of the group.

They do also have the #52 pick and one mock draft has them drafting a Bosnian player from the Euro leagues, 20 year old PF/SF, 6"11" Darmir Markota. When you read his scouting report his game sounds remarkably like Vlad Radmanovic.

And who is on the upcoming workout schedule for the Clippers with 3 weeks to go......................uh, er, nobody!

If we see any type of report we will let you know. Maybe all of our guys are vacationing over at a destination resort in the Ukraine. Lot of cute babes over there.

Clippers To Trade for Eddie Griffin?

Posted by: jamfan on Wednesday, February 08, 2006 - 09:21 AM
    Announcements
ESPN is reporting a rumor that the Clippers have offered Chris Wilcox to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Eddie Griffin. Reportedly, the Clippers are getting great production out of Brand and Kaman and that makes Wilcox expendable. Wilcox is an inside guy while Griffen likes to shoot from the outside.

I can't believe this rumor is true. The reason Griffen at 6'10" doesn't go inside is because he can't. And if you need an outside shooter, Eddie Griffin is not the guy. His career shooting percentage is only 38%, 31% from 3, and 66% from the line. Walter McCarty shoots better than that and we already have him.

I have recently written that Fred Hoiberg, who has now been cleared by his doctors to play, has his agent gaging interest in Fred coming back this year. Fred is the best 3 point shooter in the game. If you need a guy to come off the bench and shoot from the outside, we can get him without trading anybody. Moreover, if Wilcox is gone and Kaman or Brand gets injured, who could adequately fill in. Griffin can't play inside very well, and Rebraca can't be relied on at this point. Singleton would probably be the guy, but why put ourselves in that postion for Griffen who hasn't proven he can shoot in the NBA.

I believe we should keep Wilcox, match any free agent offer next summer and keep him. Wilcox is going to be a star in this league. If you do trade him, I believe you can get a frontline player who is good enough to start. We have talked about trade scenarios involving Wilcox, but it has been for players like Ron Artest and Paul Pierce, not Eddie Griffin. I'm Jamfan, and that's my opinion. What's yours?

    Dollars And Sense

Posted by: jamfan on Monday, January 23, 2006 - 07:24 AM
    Announcements
Many of you have been asking about how the current payroll of the Clippers affects their ability to sign or trade for a player they may want to bring in for the push toward the playoffs and to replace the injured Corey Maggette.

I tried to piece together their current situation by reading conflicting stories regarding where the Clippers are. Not all sports writers are accurate in their reporting. One report says that the Clips are over the cap which limits their ability to make any moves.

This is true. However, the cap is a soft cap, which means if the team resign their own free agents, those salaries do no count against the cap. Does that mean that the salaries of Brand and Maggette do not count? It appears so.

The Clippers have the highest salary payroll in their history at 51 Million (adjusted for released players). The soft cap is at 49 Mil which means they are over by only 2 Mil. But Brand's and Maggette's salaries total 18 Mil, which gives them plenty of room under the cap to add salary without being penalized.

Confused, well if you read the few articles available out their where sportswriters have addressed this issue regarding the Clippers, you could get more confused. But from what I can tell, the Clippers could trade for a more expensive player or sign an available free agent like Spree, and they would just be spending money without the penalty.

This analysis means that it is more likely that the Clippers would make a move than they otherwise would if they got penalized for every dollar they spent. Sterling probably has his checkbook handy! JamFan

    Rumors Continue to Swirl

Posted by: jamfan on Sunday, December 25, 2005 - 07:22 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - Over the Christmans holiday, rumors abound regarding the Indiana Pacers trading Ron Artest. Oddly, the Clippers are most often mentioned as the mostly likely trade suitor.

Reports out there include Coach Dunleavy having talks with Indiana to set the stage and Owner Donald Sterling chiming in that he has no problem with the trade. What trade?

So, far it is all talk. The Clippers also reportedly have told Indiana that Maggette is off the table. But that is actually OK with Indiana because they are so high on Danny Granger at small forward, and actually need a center. They don't like Jermain ONeal at center and want him to stay at power forward. Which brings us to Wilcox. Is he the best young center available? If so, this deal might go down if the Clippers include a first round draft choice. And it might go down soon.

If so, the top 7 players in the Clippers rotation will be Brand, Kaman, Maggette, Livingston, Mobley, Cassell, and Artest. Who starts and who gets minutes may depend on match ups and who is playing/shooting well. It also depends on Livingston staying healthy and Maggette getting healthy. The Clippers may start to realize that Maggette is injury prone. He has repeated injured himself the last couple of years. Recently the Clippers lost 5 of 6 with Maggette out. That....will not get it done

However, if healthy, that is a powerful 7 man rotation. But it only works if Artest comes in with his dead screwed on straight. Don't count on it. Oh yeah, it will be OK for awhile. But Artest's problems are not isolated incidences. He has been constantly disruptive to his teams even going back to his college days. There is a long term pattern with Artest.

He has recently said three things that make him a bad risk. 1- He is only going to play for another year or two. 2- He needs the ball (wants to be the first option) 3- He needs a new contract. I don't know about you, but these comments are a deal killer for me.

Cassell is not concerned and says he understands Artest. Coach doesn't seem concerned. Even tighwad owner Sterling is cool. Maybe Artest, after seeing his current teamates, as of today, literally turning their backs on him, not even wanting to even meet with him, make him realize that there is a price to pay for you actions. Even your friends can and will turn their back on you. Maybe Artest will see the light and become a good citizen. NOT! More likely, if the Clippers trade for him they will have play and live with his eccentricities and try to keep them off the court. Wilcox, is in his last year of his contract and will be a restricted free agent after the season and doesn't hide the fact he is not excited about his backup role with the Clippers. The Clips could end up getting nothing for him if they don't match offers next summer.

New poll, Should the Clippers trade for Ron Artest? Go and vote. JamFan

Clippers Won, Coach Loses The Game And His Mind!

Posted by: jamfan on Wednesday, December 14, 2005 - 08:31 AM
    Announcements
JamFan- It's time to play, "You're the Coach!" I have been one to complement Coach Dunleavy on nights when he, as well as the team, are firing on all cylinders. But some nights the team isn't going well. Like last night, when the team was shooting 33% from the floor and a one of his starters is actually stinking the place up.

The good news is the Spurs weren't lighting it up either and Duncan was 1 for 11 from the free throw line. But in the end with 17 seconds to go, a timeout is called, the Clippers were on defense, and they are up by 2 points poised to win from the Champs on their floor.

So you are now the Coach. In that time out what do you tell the team to do?

1- Play tough straight up defense and force them to take a difficult shot, even foul them while shooting because the refs eat their whistles in the waning moments. Let the clock run out.

2- If Tim Duncan touches the ball, intentionally foul him (refs call those), stop the clock, and send the MVP to the line with a chance to tie the game.

I don't know what decision you would make (comments are requested), but Coach Dunleavy reportedly told his team to take option 2. He must have been in a coma and forgot he was ahead by 2 not behind by 2. You only go for option 2 if you are behind. Moreover, EB fouled a BIG, 35 ft from the basket with 12 seconds remaining. With the clock now stopped, the MVP goes to the line, hits 2 free throws, ties the game, and the Clippers lose in overtime.

On a bad night, the team still won the game in regulation. The Coach lost the game soon after temporariily losing his mind. JamFan

How Did We Lose This Game?

Posted by: jamfan on Sunday, November 27, 2005 - 06:23 PM
    Announcements
JamFan - OK, we are at Home. We shoot 47% from the field, 43% from 3 Pt range, and hit 92% of our free throws. We had 5 starters in double figures. We out rebounded them 44 - 42, and had twice as many blocks shots. We were only a couple assists short 16 - 18, but we turned the ball over 17 times to their 9.

Since neither team made it to 100, Lawlers Law didn't come into play. That's a pretty good line to end up with a loss. Chris Kaman even had one of his best efforts of the season with 18 Pts. 12 rebs and 3 blocked shots.

We lost a 9 point lead twice, but were still in a postion to win very late in the 4th quarter. The Clippers went on a 10 - 2 run capped by a Mobley jumper with 1 minute to play, but it wasn't enough. Sometimes, a seasoned playoff team, just beats you. They hold you off at crunch time. You have to do everything right to beat them. That one stat, tunrovers, led the Pacers to getting 84 shots to the Clippers 70. Great shooting percentages don't help you if you are not shooting enough

So, the Clippers have lost 2 consecutive games for the first time this season. But, we knew by looking at the schedule, that this would be the stretch where we find out if they are real or not.

We'll have to see if they can pick themselves up and bounce back Tuesday night against the Timberwolves on the road. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Net 2 at 5 PM Pacific. Keep the Faith! JamFan

Vans with satellite dishes have become common at Clipper practices, and TV cameramen jockey for position daily around players and Coach Mike Dunleavy.

Such is life for the Southland's hottest NBA team, adjusting to an unfamiliar spotlight. "With winning comes all the accolades and all the attention, and that's what we're experiencing now," forward Elton Brand said Tuesday after practice.

"It's good because it's based on our success as a team. It's based on everything we're doing together on the court, but it's definitely different than what we've been used to.

"It was kind of cool when we were in the shadows; you only had to worry about trying to win games and then go home. Now, everybody's on the bandwagon, but we'd still rather have it this way."

The experience of veteran guards Sam Cassell and Cuttino Mobley has helped the Clippers handle their newfound celebrity.

"Sam and Cuttino have played in the playoffs and been through a lot of the things we're just getting a taste of now," Corey Maggette said. "The last time me and E.B. had a great season was when we were at Duke, so bringing in that veteran leadership has been a key.

"They're telling us, 'Hey, let's keep ourselves humble and continue doing what we do.' We're just going to keep working hard and keep this going."

Welcome To The Big Show - Clippers #3

Posted by: jamfan on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 11:42 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - I was criticized by a few when I put out my predictions in TopBuzz right before the beginning of the season, on which teams would make the Western Conference Playoffs. I had the Clippers as the #3 seed, and I was accused of being a homer, and worse. At that time, most of the pundits out there still had the Clips down deep in their power rankings and still making fun of them.

What a diffence 11 games makes. They have continued to rise in everyone's power rankings and they are not making fun of us anymore. Mark Heisler's new power rankings were published in the LA Times, and he now has the Clippers at #3 overall behind San Antonio and Detroit, and ahead of Cleveland, Dallas, Miami, and Indiana. Welcome to the big time. The Lakers are at a generous #17.

I'm shocked personally. I'm afraid someone will pinch me and I will wake up from this dream. Already, when the Clippers win we are all starting to go....ho hum....another win.

The Clippers have already been crowned the Kings of LA. With the win last Friday over the Lakers there is no doubt. The Clippers have to many weapons that are effective every night. The Lakers weaknesses are now exposed for all to see. If Kupcake doesn't do something soon, the fans will slip slowly away, to Clippers games.

There is only one more thing that needs to happen for the Clippers to truely own LA. That is for Jack Nicholson to show up at courtside for the Clipper's next home game. Welcome to the Big Show...Jack! JamFan

Poll Results - Clippers Playoff Chances

Posted by: jamfan on Monday, November 07, 2005 - 12:17 PM
    Announcements
JamFan - You, the fans, voted heavily that the Clippers are going to make the playoffs. And after this weekends results, why not? Only 3% voted that they will miss, and those were Lakers fans. Moreover, only 6% voted them to the #1 seed, a position they currently hold as the only undefeated team in the Western Conference. The voting leader was the #5 seed at 27%, while #7 garnered 21% and #3 spot finished out with 15%.

So, here are my picks for the final seeds at the end of the season. It is actually hard to do this year with so many teams in transition and injuries to key players. Here goes!

#1 San Antonio - Tough choice. They added key free agents to a championship roster.

#2 Houston - TMac is out but when he comes back they will come together and finish strong.

#3 LA Clippers - Yeah, I believe. They will win close games against top teams and blow out the weak sisters. Maggette and Livingston haven't even played yet.

#4 Dallas - If chemistry doesn't develope they could drop. Might be inconsistant.

#5 Phoenix - Amare might be gone for the season. If he comes back late, it could be to late.

#6 Seattle - Did not improve roster, others got stronger. Coaching change could be a problem.

#7 Sacramento - Changes at key positions, but if chemistry developes they have enough.

#8 LA Lakers - Roster is actually weaker on paper, but Phil Jackson has them actually playing better and some players are stepping up. Bench is question mark. So far, Kobe is a better player this season than last.

After San Antonio there is alot of parity from #2 to #8. There will be alot of teams winning between 40 & 50 games. Moreover, the bubble teams, Denver, Memphis, Minnesota, and Golden State are all very capable of making into the top 8. Only Utah, New Orleans and Portland seem to be teams who would have to improve greatly before being considered for the playoffs. JamFan

Polls Results - Next Poll ''Who Makes the Squad?''

Posted by: jamfan on Friday, October 28, 2005 - 02:06 PM
    Announcements
JamFan - Our current poll asked if Rodney White could be the next Bobby Simmons for the Clippers. They came to the Clippers under similar circumstances and have similar games.

You, the fans voted 37% Yes, 40% No, and 22% Maybe. I voted Maybe. It's probably to early to tell. I think he needs to be around a little longer and prove himself. He can only do that with minutes on the floor.

Our next poll relates to the current situation on who will actually make the final roster. Coach Dunleavy originally said that he was only going to carry 14 players.

But now, with injuries to Livingston and others who are hobbled, it looks like he will carry 15. There appears to be 13 players who have a lock on a roster spot, leaving 2 spots open. The players who are on the bubble include 7" Center Boniface Ndong, PG Yuta Tabuse, 34 year old veteran PG Anthony Goldwire, and SF Rodney White.

With Livingston hurt and with Rebraca's hobbled knees, the team seems to need another backup Center or Point Guard. That would seem to favor Ndong who can play Center, and Tabuse and Goldwire at PG. Tabuse is a fan favorite, while Goldwire is an experienced veteran. The roster has less need for another player who plays Small Forward which hurts Rodney White's chances.

Do you pick a veteran who is only going to decline with age, and give up on youthful players whose future impact is as yet unknown? Do you go with a Center or PG and give up on the instant offence that Rodney White provides and a player who could be great one day?

Alert! It was just announced that Rodney White has just been waived.

You are the now the coach. You must make the final painful cuts. Go vote. JamFan

    Injuries Drive Roster Decisions

Posted by: jamfan on Wednesday, October 26, 2005 - 12:58 PM
    Announcements
By Jason Reid, Times Staff Writer

Injuries have prompted the Clippers to reevaluate their season-opening roster.

Starting small forward Corey Maggette (strained left hamstring), backup point guard Shaun Livingston (back injury), starting center Chris Kaman (sore left hand) and backup center Zeljko Rebraca (tendinitis in his left knee) have been slowed in the exhibition season, with Livingston sidelined indefinitely.

The Clippers had planned to carry 14 players to start the season, but it appeared Monday they would instead have a maximum 15-man roster.

"We're probably going to go that way," Coach Mike Dunleavy said after practice at the Spectrum health club in El Segundo.

"With the injuries, we're just not sure who's going to be healthy to start the season. We just don't know, so we're going to have to look at some different guys in different situations."

Free-agent point guard Anthony Goldwire, recently signed because of Livingston's status, has secured a roster spot by default.

The Clippers need three active point guards, and Goldwire would join starter Sam Cassell and rookie Daniel Ewing at the position. Dunleavy was pleased with Goldwire's performance in Sunday's 112-82 exhibition victory against the Golden State Warriors.

"He was great," Dunleavy said. "He does some good things, and we do need three point guards."

In addition to Goldwire and Ewing, rookie forwards James Singleton and Yaroslav Korolev and veteran forward Walter McCarty are also expected to make the team. That would leave one spot for either forward Rodney White or forward/center Boniface Ndong.

The 6-foot-9 White, signed during training camp, was selected in the first round (ninth overall) by the Detroit Pistons in the 2001 draft. He played in 58 games with the Denver Nuggets last season, averaging 5.1 points.

In seven exhibitions, White has averaged 7.6 points and shot 43.6% from the field. He could provide depth at small forward if Maggette's hamstring doesn't cooperate, but Ndong, a native of Senegal, might be needed if Kaman's hand remained sore much longer.

The 7-foot Ndong, who has averaged six points a game in exhibition play, had his best performance against Golden State, scoring 16 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Ndong has a contractual issue that would have to be addressed, but it probably wouldn't deter the Clippers from keeping him if Dunleavy decided that's what was best for the team.

"I've got to make some cuts soon and the guys have made it harder for me," Dunleavy said. "We have a lot of guys who have played well."

JamFan - Well, its was almost unanimous! When asked whether or not the Clippers should sign Sam Cassell to a two year extension (3 years overall), you, the fans, voted 36% for an extension with only about 4% saying no. 60% of those who voted, wanted to wait and see until the allstar break.

The next poll relates to an article I wrote (read below) titled "Could Rodney White Be The Next Bobby Simmons?" It speaks about how Bobby and Rodney arrived here under similar circumstances. So far Rodney White is 11th in minutes played but 6th in scoring with 9 PPG 3 RPG on 46% shooting. If you project those numbers over 40 minutes, he would produce 21 PPG and 7 RPG. Is he the next Bobby Simmons? Go vote! JamFan

    The Clippers Are The Kings

Posted by: jamfan on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 11:47 PM
    Announcements
JamFan - As the Clippers ran away from Portland Tuesday night for a 99-85 victory, they have, at least for the moment, become the Kings of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. I know, it's only preseason. But I would rather be 3 and 1 and on top than 1 and 3 and bottom fishing. Especially this year.

The two things that the Clippers need to do most is one, become a team that can finish games, and secondly, start a winning tradition that encourages players to want to come to this team in the coming years. It begins now. Not after the preseason. How do they do it?

They have the beginning of something every great team needs. They have something the Lakers do not as yet have in their rebuilding efforts. You see, every coach can prepare their teams to beat the Lakers by basically instructing their players to not let Kobe beat them. It is what they did last year and the Lake show had more shooters then than they do now. If Kobe doesn't beat you, then who will?

So, what is it that the Clippers have this year? The answer....... more than just one weapon. Who are you going to stop? You will no longer be able to key on 1 or 2 players. To beat them you will have to stop everybody. Good luck!

In last nights game, Sam went for 18, Corey had 15, CW scored 13 hitting 6 of 7 shots, Elton had 12, Killer Kaman 8 points & 12 rebounds, and our new hero, Rodney closed out with 12 points hitting 5 of 7 shots. As a team the Clips shot 53% form the floor, 50% from the 3, and 94% of their throws. Hek, Cuttino was given the night off just to cheer. Portland didn't know which of our starters to stop. And when we go to our bench this year........we are not going to be pushed around anymore.

Enthusiam is contagious. Shooting is contagious. Finishing is contagious. Winning is fun. We are all going to see a lot more of it this year. Prey we stay healthy. Get ready for the fun. JamFan

Is Rodney White The Next Bobby Simmons

Posted by: jamfan on Sunday, October 16, 2005 - 10:59 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - I recently wrote an article about the signing of Rodney White, comparing the similarities of his acquisition to how the Clippers acquired Bobby Simmons. Both players were sitting mostly on the bench of their prior teams and because of crowded rosters at their positions didn't get a chance to show what they could do.

White, the 9th overall pick by Detroit in the 2001 draft, was highly touted coming out of college where he attended North Carolina-Charlotte. But he recently couldn't find a job as a free agent and was going begging, much like Bobby did when he was a free agent after his stint with the Wizards. In his short career, he has already bounced around to 4 different clubs. Only 25 years old, he is listed as a SF at 6' 9" and 230 lbs.

Could Rodney White be the Clippers next Bobby Simmons? Given the opportunity to get some PT last night, all Rodney did was score 13 points, hitting 6 of 15 shots, dished off 3 assists, handcuffed 3 steals, elevated for 9 rebounds, 4 offensive, all in only 27 minutes.

Is Rodney White is for real? The Clippers can only hope! JamFan

    What a Sun Set!

Posted by: jamfan on Sunday, October 16, 2005 - 10:52 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - The Clippers jumped into first place in the preseason standings with a close victory on the road over the Suns, 90-87. With 6 keys players, Kaman, Brand, Cassell, Livingston, McCarty, and Rebraca, not playing for one reason or another, the Clippers had to rely on alot of new faces to get the job done.

It's early in the season yet, but one thing is obvious already. Corey Maggette is the Man. He is putting up numbers every night, including 21 last night, hitting 3 of 5 three pointers, 6 for 6 from the line and 5 rebounds. He seems to want to continue to be the team leader by getting the job done every night.

With so many players out, others had to step up. Daniel Ewing started at point guard and made good on his opportunity scoring 12 points with 5 assists in only 29 minutes. Chris Wilcox started to finally make some noise with 10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 offensive, in 28 minutes. Quinton Ross went for 10 on 5 for 11 shooting in 20 minutes. Rodney White added 13 points.

From a Team concept, the most important development in last nights game was that the Clippers did not fade down the stretch in a close game. A reversal of the old trend of winning through 3 quarters and losing in the final minutes is the most important change our team has to make this season in order to make a run to the playoffs and beyond. Mobley and Singleton Shine In Loss

Posted by: jamfan on Saturday, October 15, 2005 - 09:23 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - We shouldn't take any more away from last nights loss than we should from the win we got in the first preseason game. What is more important, is watching what how the team is developing, and the progress of certain players.

Last nights game gave us a glimpse of things to come. It's obvious that Sam Cassell is running the show when he is one the floor and is more than capable of doing so. Mobley turned into a human highlight film hitting 7 of 8 shots for 17 points in only 21 minutes. Our two off season aquisitions are the two stars who seem to want to carry the team so far early in the preseason.

So where are our stars form last year. Maggette picked up where he left off last year hitting 6 of 15 for 17 points in 30 minutes with 5 rebounds. But Brand, out with a bruised thigh, Livingston, bad back, and Kaman, gone to a funeral, opened the door for other players to get some PT.

So who took advantage. We saw the emergence of a player that TopBuzz fans know about, but the rest of the sportsworld is still probably saying "Who's that guy." Yes, James Singleton! In only 23 minutes all he did was score 11 points on 2 for 2 shooting, collect 12 rebounds including 2 offensive, and more importantly hit 7 of 8 free throws. To me that means he is going to the hoop and whoever was guarding him was helpless, sending him to the line several times.

So who is not taking advantage of the extra PT. Well, with 15 players playing in the game and the PT spread around among so many, there isn't any obvious disappointments except maybe Chris Wilcox, who only scored 7 points with 5 rebounds playing a team high 30 minutes. He benifitted from Kaman's absence and Rebraca's early departure from the game with tendinitis in his knees, a re-occurring injury that worries me because we need the depth he provides at center.

Tonight we get to see how the team responds out on the road as they face the Suns on what is the first of 5 straight road games before returning to Staples to face Seattle October 27. JamFan

Polls Results - NO On Maggette Trade

Posted by: jamfan on Friday, October 14, 2005 - 12:58 PM
    Announcements
JamFan - In the latest poll, TopBuzz readers defeated the rumored trade of Magette for Paul Pierce straight up, by a narrow margin of 56% No to 44% Yes.

The real rumor is an ever more ridiculous trade that would include Maggette and another player, Brand, Wilcox, or Livingston. The Celtics must think that Elgin is suffering from severe brain loss.

A straight up trade is at least a little more realisitic in that the two players have very similar numbers. It seems that more voters agreed with my last article that Maggette is 2 years younger, improving every year, his numbers have gone up every year, and Pierce's numbers have gone down the last 3 years in a row. Advantage Maggette!

The next poll deals with one of the next important issues facing the Clippers this season. Sam, I am, so far is being a good citizen and giving great hope to Clippers fans. I think he actually enjoys being here and playing for this team.

Sam has already asked for a contract extension. And you can understand with the injury he had last year why the Clippers would have a wait and see attitude. Waiting to long to address the extension is also a gamble. Good Citizen Sam could become more disgruntled if the situation drags on to long and it could become a distraction from such a promising season.

If Sam is healthy and returns to the all star level form of 2 years ago.............you have a chance to sign a 4th quarter clutch shooter, something the Clippers have always desperately needed, for a bargain price. Sam is in the twilight of his career. If he was 28, It would cost the Clippers a bundle. But at age 35 he gets less, because an older player is more of a gamble. A two year extension would make him a Clipper for 3 years, including this year, and he would be 38 at the end of the contract. By that time Livingston would be more than ready to take over the reigns, maybe even sooner. Go vote! JamFan

    The Killer Kaman

Posted by: jamfan on Tuesday, October 11, 2005 - 03:56 PM
    Announcements
JamFan - In a recent poll on which player would be the biggest surprise of the preseason, You the fans voted for James Singleton. I have as yet shared with you who I think will be the big surprise. My vote went to a guy that I used to call the "Pillsbury Dough Boy" because I felt he played soft. Drafted early in the first round and rated the best center coming out of college that year, I expected alot of Chris Kaman. But I forgot the golden rule of the NBA that tells us about the long list of great players who didn't start to blossom until their 3rd year.

After his injuries of last year healed and allowed him to play up to his potential, he actaully started to blossom and finished the season strong with 9.1 PPG, 6.7 RPB, 1.08 BPG shooting 50% in only 26 minutes. Projected over 40 minutes his numbers would have been 15 PPG, 11 RPG, & 1.73 BPG.

Then comes the Vegas Summer leagues. Summer leagues by nature are more run and gun, there's alot of outside shooting by guys trying to impress somebody, and it's just not a conducive sitution for big guys to show off their skills. So all Chris did was go for 20.2 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 1.8 BPG on 53% shooting, and was named a 1st team All Star. But that isn't the end of story. Many scouts reported that he dominated. Would have been the MVP if they had such an award.

If he is about to explode this would be a good time to do it. The new Clipper roster is conducive for a Big to show off his skills. The last couple of years the Clips were not blessed with outside shooting allowing teams to collaspe on defense and more or less dare them to shoot outside. This makes life rough for Chris and Elton. It won't be that way this year. Defenses will have to stretch themselves out creating opportunities for the Bigs to do their thing inside. So, the time is now. Chris needs to go to SuperCuts for his new doo, to go along with his new image. Yeah, black steaks on blond, spiked straight up in the air. Then we will christen him......The Killer Kaman. JamFan

    Maggette Trade A Recycled Rumor

Posted by: jamfan on Monday, October 10, 2005 - 09:40 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - I don't lend much credence to Peter Vecey's comments regarding the pending trade of Maggette for Paul Pierce. This could be the same old tired recycled rumors that have been going on for months now. Sometime, sports writers just need to fill space.

The other rumor out there has Maggette and Wilcox going for Pierce. But, let's put each one of you in the GM's chair and see if you would make that trade. Paul Pierce's numbers and production per minute played is essentially the same as Maggette's. However, his numbers have actually dropped off every year the last 3 years. He seems to have peaked 4 years ago. Maggette is two years younger and could actually get better. His numbers have gone up every year. He made big strides last year.

Paul is as good as he is going to get. Now, with Coach Dunleavy telling the world that Wilcox's body and game is starting to remind him of Amare Stoudemire, how would you justify to the fans trading two for one. I think the reason these rumors have never turned into a trade is that it is debateable that you would trade the two players straight up much less throw Wilcox into the deal. Elgin didn't just fall off the turnip truck yesterday and Coach would never endorse that deal.

In our new poll I am asking only about a straight up trade, only because I couldn't see any fan voting for a 2 for 1 trade. Go vote. JamFan

    Livingston Injuries Cause For Concern

Posted by: jamfan on Friday, October 07, 2005 - 08:19 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - All the scouting reports on Shaun Livingston before he was drafted were flush with admiration for the skills he possessed, and the potential he had for becoming a top point guard in the league some day. But, you can't say we weren't warned. Those same reports said that any team that drafted him should be forewarded that despite his height, his body was very slight, and questioned his ability to bang with NBA players anytime soon. Well, those warnings are starting to come to fruition. His first season, there was the knee surgury that cost a large portion of the season. Then on the first day of the Vegas summer leagues he hurt his hand, never to play again. Now, at the beginning of training camp, and suffering from a strained lower back, he can not participate in contact drills. As a clipper fan I am concerned, and you should be too. That's alot of injuries and his second season in the NBA hasn't even started yet. The Clippers off season moves, making them deeper at the guard position, and with Korolev also capable of playing guard, will hopefully insulate the team against a possible injury that could take Shaun out of the lineup. These early results tell me that the Clips should work on him getting stronger before rushing him into the lineup with alot of minutes. I predict he will not start for the Clippers but will be the back up point guard. We have veterans who are more than capable of leading the team at the guard position while Livingston developes his game and his body. JamFan

Poll Results - You liked the Rodman Clone

Posted by: jamfan on Thursday, October 06, 2005 - 10:00 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - In our most recent poll, you the fans voted James Singleton, who says he patterns his game after Dennis Rodman, as the player most likely to surprise at training camp and in the preseason. Vitually tied for second was Livingston and Kaman.

I'm Shocked. You die hard Clipper fans really are paying attention and do your homework. Little has been written about Singleton except for what I posted here on TopBuzz. He has been in Italy the last two years. So I'm surprized that he was the leading vote getter.

Early reports from camp says that indeed Singleton and Wilcox are raising eyebrows. Wilcox's phsyical body and skills is being touted as starting to resemble Amare Stoudemire's. Are you kidding me? If he brings Amare's game then watch out.

According to Coach Dunleavy, the biggest surprise so far is actually Korolev. At age 18, and boyish looking by nature, he seems to be able to perform in all aspects of the game better than you would expect from such a young raw rookie. He apparently isn't backing down from anybody or anything. Things are starting to sound interesting.
    Stay tuned. Jam Fan

Clippers Sign Former 1st Round Pick

Posted by: jamfan on Wednesday, October 05, 2005 - 07:45 PM
    Announcements
JamFan - The Clippers signed another young player, 25 year old Rodney White, who was taken with the 9th overall pick in the first round of the 2001 draft by the Detroit Pistons. At 6"9" 230 lbs he is listed at SF. His career numbers are 7.1 PPG, 2.2 RPG, shooting 42% from the field in 15 minutes per game. After being traded a couple of times, he finished the season with Golden State but shot 40% from the field at 3 Pt. range. If you projected his numbers over 40 minutes he would shine at 19 PPG and 6 RPG. So, he's got some potential. Remember when the Clippers signed Bobby Simmons. He languished on the Wizards bench and was out looking for a job. The Clips took a chance on him and look what happened. So, you never know, sometimes young guys blossom just at the right time. I hope his time is now. Who's next? JamFan

    The Return Of Eric?

JamFan - OK, this is pure speculation on my part. But I am putting 2 and 2 together to come up with this theory. It is now being reported that the Chicago Bulls are looking for a suitor to take on Eric Piatkowski's 3 million dollar contract, and will pay a cash incentive to that team to pull off the deal. And then we now find out that the Clippers have just waived Frank Williams who just arrived at training camp and barely broke a sweat. I don't think the Clippers even have enough players to play 2 scrimmage games at the same time. Hmmmmm........ And just in case you are wondering if Eric can still stroke it, at age 34 he shot 43% from the field last season and 42.5% from 3 pt. range. Both are higher than his career averages. If it happens remember you heard it here first. Eric Piatkowski with his deadly 3 pt. shooting makes his triumphant return to the Clippers. JamFan

JamFan - The Clippers website is actually a good one in that they actually give you up to date activities and pics. For analysis, rumors, and insight on what the fans think, you still have to come to TopBuzz. Go to clippers.com and look at the media day pics they have posted. The pic of Mobley and Cassell on the home page is the best. It looks like they are really have fun. Let's hope so. On the other hand, Korolev's pic looks like a young boy. And yes, Chris Kaman is still looking for a doo that works for him. I think he needs to go to Supercuts. Shawn is hiding the Fro and is back to his hip hop look. Probably doesn't want the wind resistance on the Fro to slow him down. While the Clippers site is worth checking on a regular basis, the Lakers website is almost worthless. They tell you very little and usually with a delayed reaction time. If you want to know what is going on with the Lakers you are better off going to a new site......

Alert - Ex Clipper Simmons To Be Arrested

Posted by: jamfan on Monday, October 03, 2005 - 11:22 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - A shocking story out of Milwaukee says that Milwaukee police will arrest ex Clipper Bobby Simmons on charges of fondling a women and then hitting her in the face. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported the incident allegedly happened at 2 AM Saturday morning outside a downtown bar. Officers plan to arrest Simmons on suspicion of misdemeanor fourth-degree sexual assault and misdemeanor battery. It would seem that this development would definitely affect today's media day for the Milwaukee Bucks. Instead of talking basketball, I'm sure Bobby received alot of questions regarding this pending matter. As former fans of Bobby as a Clipper, let us not jump to conclusions until the charges have run their course. But how many times have we seen NBA players, as well as players in other sports, get into trouble at bars and nightclubs in inner city areas. Recently, rookie Andray Blatche was shot during an apparent car jacking in the wee hours of the morning. He literally dodged a bullit that could have ended his life. There are places to hang and places not to hang. To often players hang in all the wrong places. And what is Bobby doing closing a bar at 2AM, right before the start of training camp? JamFan

Poll Results- You Liked KG the Best!

Jamfan - Looking towards the future, we asked in the latest poll which elite player you would like to see the Clippers bring in to get to win a championship. And the winner is...........Kevin Garnett, followed by Vince Carter, We Have Enough, and Dirk Nowitski. The poll didn't take into account which players we were most likely to have a chance of signing as a free agent or trading for. Think that KG is a pipe dream? Well he recently bought a home in Malibu, has been living there this summer, and there have been reports of him dissing his team privately to locals. He could force a trade and come to LA, but most feel it would be to come and play with Kobe. But, you never know. Maybe, he misses Sam. Vince Carter, at #2 was a surprise to me, not because of talent, but because of so many injuries the last couple of years. It's obvious so many of us believe in the team we have now because that was the third choice. So that brings us to the next poll. Who is going to get the Buzz in training camp and in preseason games? Who is going to shock the team and the fans with a unusual high level of play or special talent? I included only new players or young players who could make a big improvement. Go and vote. JamFan

    Clipper Training Camp Opens Tuesday

Posted by: jamfan on Saturday, October 01, 2005 - 09:27 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - With all the excitement for this years team, with many new players, players with playoff experience like Mobley, and 2 championship rings like Cassell, training camp open Tuesday at Santa Barbara City College with alot of Buzz. This will be the beginning of our being able to view this new team to see how they gel, to see if chemistry developes. One difference this year we will have at least one guy who has made the "All-Interview" team. Yes, I predict Sam, I am, will create an atmosphere of never having a dull moment. I like that. He will actually bring a new level of press to the Clippers that we don't always get. And, I also predict that he will be a good citizen. All he has to do is look at the fortunes of his good buddy Latrell Sprewell, who has talent, but can not even get a job as a free agent. Some predict he might even have to sign for the league minimum. Sam, who is looking for a contract extension, does not want to endure Spree's fate. So, he will have a big mouth, but one he uses to be a cheerleader, to taunt the opposition. We haven't had a character quite like him. So, I need everyone's help. I actually live close to Santa Barbara and would like to visit training camp a couple of times for open practice or scrimages, but I can't find any schedule, even on the Clippers site, as to what may be available. If any of you TopBuzz fans can comment to this article on any info you find out it would be greatly appreciated. I will go and report back to TopBuzz what's happening. Hopefully, I will have a take that the press will miss and you all will have some insight that the general public might not get. Let me know. - JamFan

    Clippers Still Looking at Bigs

Posted by: jamfan on Friday, September 30, 2005 - 08:17 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - You would think that after signing Walter McCarty that the Clippers would be finished in the big man department. Instead, the Clippers have invited three free-agent centers to training camp. Jared Reiner, a 6-foot-11 post player, who played in 3 games last season with Chicago. Also invited were Boniface N'Dong and Jan Jagla. Boniface N'Dong caught the Clippers coaches' eyes while playing for the Nuggets summer league team. Jagla played last year in Greece and Germany. I guess this means that McCarty is being looked at as depth at PF. He also brings a 35% 3 Pt shooting average, not bad for a big. But the Clips may be thinking that they need depth at Center as well. If one of these 3 invitees sticks, they could end up in the NBDL league, and be available if Kaman or Rebraca goes down with injury. Wilcox would still be the obvious immediate backup at center, but he is supposed to be backing up Brand. The NBDL was an excellent addition this year because it allows teams to actually be developing young players, like Yuta, and give them playing time, instead of putting them on injured researve with fake injuries. Camp is going to be very interesting this year. JamFan

Walter McCarty Picks Up Clippers Jersey

Posted by: jamfan on Thursday, September 29, 2005 - 05:12 PM
    Announcements
JamFan - Elgin Baylor announced that the Clippers have signed journeyman 6" 10" Power Forward Walter McCarty. As I looked at the Clippers depth chart, I noticed that we were OK at PF and Center as long as nobody got hurt. With the departure of Mikki Moore to Seattle, signing Walter McCarty makes sense to have another big body to come off the bench. . He led Kentucky to the NCAA Championship in 1996 and was the 19th pick by New York in the 96 draft. Over his career, Walter has averaged 5.3 points and 2.7 rebounds. Last season he helped the Phoenix Suns to the Western Conference Final. The Clippers now have 14 players under contract. That means that two players would likely be in the NBDL to start the season. The mere existance of the NBDL lends credence to the speculation that Baby Shaq would be coming as well. If he doesn't make the roster he can at least get seasoning over here instead of in Europe. The Clippers have owned his rights for 3 years now and he is "about" 21 years old. We'll see. There are no rumors being reported out there currently. JamFan

    Baby Shaq Plays, Wins, Dominates

Posted by: jamfan on Thursday, September 22, 2005 - 10:01 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - I'm amazed at how one of our own regular TopBuzz fans named "Rojobilbao" finds overseas articles that none of the rest of us can find. But he refers to them often in "comments" to other articles, so I'm not sure all of you are seeing them. For those of you who are interested in Baby Shaq's progress, go to comments on the prior article "Marko Brawls" and there are two links there that you can copy and paste to your address bar. One link takes you to a recent picture of Baby Shaq. Ok, he looks a little heavy, but not Refridgerator Perry heavy. I'm reminded of times I would go to Laker games when Shaq was at about 360 lbs. and in person he actually didn't look heavy at all. Shaq is about 3-4 inches taller than Baby Shaq. So, I expected the worst. He is bent over in a pick stance in the picture, but standing up straight......well, if he is 400lbs he is carrying it well. At 400 lbs. he should be "Shaq Daddy" because if he ever makes it to the NBA he might be the only guy that could shove Shaq around. The other article refers to a game that Baby Shaq played in September 20 for Olympiacos BC in a 91-70 victory over the Italian team Cantu. The article says that Baby Shaq, Sofo Schortsianitis, had the best showing with 14 pts, 5 rebs, and 4 steals (minutes unknown). How does a 400 lb center get 4 steals? He must have been playing point guard. Maybe, Baby Shaq will make it someday to the Clippers, maybe even this year. Who knows? Maybe he will prove all of us, who have been making fun of him lately, dead wrong. I hope so. I actually want to see if he can push Shaq around, as a Clipper. - JamFan - P.S. OK, copy and past to your address bar this link - http://www.cantubasket.it/news_file/Schortsanitis400.JPG - for the latest pic of Baby Shaq. I don't think he actually weighs 400 lbs. If he does, he is a 400lb STUD of a basketball player. I wouldn't want to run hard into a pick set by that guy. It could lead to a concussion, several broken bones, or death. If one of our Admins could grab that pic and post it to our Clippers photo gallery and let eveyone know when it is there, that would be great. I don't know how to do it. JamFan

Marko Brawls, Rebraca Quits, Baby Shaq Vanishes!

JamFan - On paper the national team for Serbia-Montenegro looked like a championship level team for the current Eurobasket championship series. The starting lineup was made up mostly of NBA players including Marko Jaric, Darko Milicek, Nenad Krstic, Vladimir Radmanovic, and Zeljko Rebraca of the Clippers. But trouble was brewing. Apparently several of the teamates didn't like one another. After being booed by there hometown crowd during one loss, and an early exit from the tournament, Marko Jaric and others had a locker room brawl. Rebraca was reportedly not a part of the scuffle. The coach quit. The team captain quit, and Rebraca finally said, I'm out of here. Quiting after they had already been eliminated sounds like he's never coming back. Ah, isn't it nice to be a Clipper. Meanwhile, I never noticed "Baby Shaq" errr "Baby Fat" ever being mentioned in any reports of the Greek National Team while playing in the championships. So I went to their website and checked the roster and he isn't on it. I guess when you show up at 400 lbs. they send you home, or to Euro Weight Watchers. Sad! JamFan

Fantasy Dreaming, Kobe, KG and LeBron

    Announcements
JamFan - I want to run a new poll on who the Clippers should sign as a free agent over the next two years. This is a fantasy poll. We want to dream about who the Clips should sign to get us to the next level, a championship. The poll could also include an elite player that we could possibly trade for. We have some obvious candidates but we are calling on you to give us some additional names. So let's dream and drool over Lebron James, Kobe, Rashard Lewis, Ben Wallace, Peja Stojakovic, Tayshaun Prince, Mike Dunleavy, Carmelo Anthony, Dirk Nowitski, Jason Terry, Mike Bibby, Caron Butler, Nene, Vince Carter, Eric Piatkowski, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Ron Artest, Vince Carter, Jermaine Oneill, Jason Kidd, or Eddie Curry. So you don't like my list? Or maybe there is someone I left out. Then you can go to Hoopsworld.com and search for 2006 NBA Free Agents. Also, google search 2006 or 2007 NBA Free Agents, and there are a couple sights that have the lists. Ok, so don't give me D Wade, Yao, Amare,TMac, AI, or Shaq, cause it ain't likley they are coming here. But we can dream a little, and there are some great players who have talked about coming to LA. If we make the playoffs, those players might come to the Clippers, especially since the Lakers are out of the picture for a couple of years. Remember, players who are free agents 2 years from now could get traded next year if they have signaled to their teams that they will not re-sign when they become free agents in 2007. Let me know who you think should be in our new poll. Your comments and names are requested. Let's make sure Sterling spends all his money this time. JamFan

    Recent Poll Results

Posted by: jamfan on Monday, September 19, 2005 - 06:04 PM
    Announcements
JamFan - You, the fans, have spoken. And we have some interesting results in recent polls posted on TopBuzz in the last month or so. And the winners are.....drum roll please. Who should the Clippers sign from the list of current free agents. Brent Barry was in first place until it was reported he is not a free agent this year. We would have to trade for him (and he might be available). So the winner is.... Jason Kapono, who would obviously provide outside shooting. Barry came in second with Gerald Wallace third. Check out Wallace's stats. I'm surprised he is still out there. He might be asking to much money, though he is at least worth the mid level exception.
Another recent poll asked what we should change Baby Shaq's name to since he checked in at 400 lbs. in Greece. You selected "Baby Fat" followed by "Beached Whale Shaq."
On who should take the last shot to win the game this year, you guys went for the new players and voted Sam #1 and Cuttino #2. Keep in mind that Kaman and Rebraca both shoot well over 50% from the floor, but the middle has to be open, and Rebraca isn't likely to be out there at the finish.
Most importantly, on how many games will the Clippers win this year you voted for 47-50, followed by 41-46 games. I feel that this was an honest assessment from fans who should be a bunch of homers and voter for 50+. But the mid 40's will probably get us to the playoffs. Getting to the 6 or 7 spot keeps us away from San Antonio in the first round. So we may need upper 40's to 50 to make a serious run.
So, there you have it. Everyone made good choices and it just shows Clipper management that they should let us make the decisions for them.
More exciting polls coming soon. JamFan

    Korolev Playing The Waiting Game

Posted by: jamfan on Wednesday, September 14, 2005 - 08:18 AM
    Announcements
Jamfan - The Orange Couty Register reports that the negotiation of the buyout of Yaroslav Korolev's contract with his CSKA Moskow team is ongoing. The team was reportedly supposed to respond a couple of weeks ago and they probably have. They probably countered on the offer price. The buyout is reported to be between $750,000 and 1 million. In the article GM Baylor said the Clippers were not in any rush. Buy it makes sense to have a young player like that here at the very beginning of training camp which is only about 3 weeks away. So, the haggling goes on, but I would bet that Clips will try to get the deal done in time for Yaroslav to be here sooner rather than later. JamFan

Mobley Plays In Katrina Hurricane Relief Game

    Announcements
JamFan - Cuttino Mobley played along side Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett and a host of other NBA stars in the Katrina Hurricane Relief Game Sunday Night. Cuttino made a good showing. However, the game was mostly just entertainment. It was a cross between an NBA All Star Game and a "And 1" tour game. Reportedly Sam and Chris was there but didn't play and probably participated in working with relief efforts and fundraising. A good time was had by all and nobody got hurt. JamFan

    The Clippers Big Picture

Posted by: jamfan on Saturday, September 10, 2005 - 08:40 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - Man, you guys are just enormous. I am amazed at the response we get from the Clipper fans and readers of TopBuzz when we put takes out there. I know for a fact that some folks inside the Clipper organization read TopBuzz and why not, it's a great place to get ideas. When we ask for names of free agents to bring in you guys give back great ideas. But you do not stop there. We also received all sorts of creative ideas for Coach Dunleavy on how to creatively use the players we already have to create matchup problems for other teams. You, the fans had Wilcox, Rebraca, and Livingston at small forward in different scenarios with Maggette at the 2. Good stuff. In my editorial "Lakers Unloaded...Clippers Reloaded,"(see below) I spoke of the state of the team today vs. the Lakers. This article speaks of the improvement that will hopefully propel the Clips into the playoffs and past the Lakers again this year. But you guys automatically start talking about winning a championship, bringing in the superstar that will make the difference, and who is going to be available as a free agent in 2006. Hek, the Clippers might as well let us run the team. With all this enthusiam I think we can get the job done. But to get to the next level, sign that superstar, win a championship, we have to establish a winning tradition. That's the big picture. The ownership has started a new committment, and the management is working hard to improve the lineup, but unless we make the playoffs for a couple of years in a row and show that this team is indeed moving up the ladder, Kevin Garnet (or Kobe Bryant) is not coming. The greatest players want to play for the greatest teams and win a championship. They also want to play in big market cities like LA, and in nice arenas. We do have that to offer. At one time I even wanted to write an article and start a poll on changing the Clippers name, but I was afraid to many of you might be offended. It was all just a grand scheme to change that perception in the league among the players, fans, and most importantly the media that the this organization has indeed turned a corner. But perceptions that have been built up over several decades are hard to change quickly. The media actually likes beating up on the Clippers and especially the owner, Donald Sterling. So from now on the Clippers will have a new image and be referred to by their new name....."The LA Air", or is it "The LA Hoops" or how about "The LA Attack". Actually, I have never been able to come up with a name that I really liked. That's the real reason we have never had this discussion before. Ah yes, I have a feeling I'm going to hear it from you guys. You either hate the idea or you have better ideas for the new name. Either way, that is what Topbuzz is all about - Jam Fan

    Lakers, Unloaded...Clippers, Reloaded

Posted by: jamfan on Friday, September 09, 2005 - 09:04 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - I thought the Lakers were one of the most hated teams in America when you leave the fan base of SoCal. But it amazes me that commentators continue to write about how well the Lakers have reloaded their team this year. They seem to be really confused between reloading a coaching staff (even though most of the same guys are back) and reloading a roster. Coaches can't shoot, rebound, assist, or play defense. So let's look at what the Lakers have actually done. If you don't count college or high school kids who have never played in the NBA, The Lake show removed 4 players from last years roster who scored a combined 40 points a game. They replaced them with 2 players who scored 9 points a game. It seems that Kupcake is using fuzzy math. Who exactly is going to make up that 31 point deficit in scoring that they lost, Phil Jackson? That's 31 points taken away from a team that ended the season literally in the toilet. They added Kwame, a malcontent, who was removed from his teams roster for the playoffs and has a questionable work ethic, and McKie, who showed everyone last season that he is likely finished averaging only 2 points a game. Where is the reloading? Even though the clippers finished ahead of the Lakers last year, two power rankings have come out with the Lakers way ahead of the Clippers. Dime Magazine gave the Clippers no respect at all. I guess that is to be expected. We will have to prove it on the court. But let's compare what the Clippers did to what the Lakers did. The Clippers removed 4 players from last years roster who scored 37 points a game and replaced them with 3 players, Mobley, Cassell, and Singleton, who scored 42 points a game. That is at least 5 points in a positive direction instead of 31 points in the wrong direction like the Lakers. Moreover, the Clippers added leadership and clutch shooting instead of deadheads and finished veterans. The Lakers have somewhere in the neighborhood of 17 players under contract (I lost count) and an imbalanced lineup overloaded with small forwards, and no cap space. The Clippers still have room to add a player or two, still have cap space, and still have their two exemptions to use if need be. The Lakers still have time to salvage their off season, and there are rumors of either Latrell Sprewell or Jason Kapono joining their roster. But neither one of those guys can score 31. And for those commentators who believe that Phil Jackson will make a big difference, I ask them remember how well Phil and the Chicago Bulls did when Michael Jordan retired to go play baseball and he no longer had a dominant roster. Not to mention watching the triangle offense is one of the most boring things in the world. It's kind of like watching the Raiders run "student body right" every time they snap the ball. It's like bad re-run. Sooner or later you really want them run a different play. I will be coming out with my power rankings as soon as most of the best free agents are gone and rosters are settled. My power rankings will have the Clippers ahead of the Lakers. And I believe that the Clippers will beat the Lakers every time they meet them this year. JamFan

    Clipper Roster Needs Depth

Posted by: jamfan on Wednesday, September 07, 2005 - 09:51 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - When you see a world championship caliber team like the San Antonion Spurs go out and sign a couple of serious players, you know they are concerned about adding depth to a already stacked team, and insulating the team against injuries. The Clippers have a couple of obvious flaws when it comes to depth and are vulnerable to injury. The tough question is where do we go from here to fix the problem. There are over 50 free agents out there, but none of them are franchise players. The best are restricted. But we do not need another starter and there probably isn't enough cap space to sign a "stud" player anyway. The only possible trade bait I feel the Clippers would be willing to part with might be Wilcox (and I do not promote that). If they traded anybody else it certainly would be for a "Killer" player in return. The starting lineup for the Clips seems to be set with good backups but not enough credible back ups. We have a set 3 guard lineup with Livingston, Mobley, and Cassell. The center postion is set with Kaman and Rebraca. Power Forward is more than good with Brand and Wilcox. At small forward......uh, well Maggette and Singleton or Korolev if he comes. We do not have a proven back up at small forward, and what happens if one of our 3 guards gets hurt, or one of our centers and power forwards. One answer would have been Brunson and Mikki Moore but we let those two guys go. I recently wrote an article introducing the idea of Peyton or Sprewell as possible Clippers. Most of you hated that idea because of chemistry concerns. Lamond Murray, an ex-Clipper, and Scott Padgett have signed on with the Nets ending any speculation one of those two are coming. There aren't any credible rumors out there about who the Clippers might still be pursuing. If I threw out a short list of names from the still long list of free agents I would be just pulling your leg. So its up to you fans. Lets send a message to the Clippers as to who you think they should bring in at this point. Your comments are requested. Then we will do a poll of the best suggestions. JamFan

    Korolev Still Waits

    Announcements
JamFan - An article from CSKA Moscow's website, was re-published in a popular "Hoops" website today, Wednesday. I don't know why they did that when it appears from the dates that the article is at least a couple months old. Anyway, it quotes CEO Serbey Kuschenko as saying the Clippers haven't made an offer yet and it will take some time to decide on a buyout. Obviously, because this is old news, recent reports of an impending deal are probably more accurate. The more recent reports However claim that the decision was to be made by this last Monday. When we have a done deal it will be posted on TopBuzz immediately. Stay Tuned. JamFan

    ''Da Love Shaq''

Posted by: jamfan on Monday, September 05, 2005 - 09:35 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - Over the weekend, rumors abound that the possible buy out of Baby Fat's Greek contract have intensified. The status of the negotiations has changed however. They are now negotiating on a price per pound basis. The Clippers are now offering 12.95 lb. The only difference is that the Greek Team is now willing to pay the Clippers to float him away. The reason the negotiating is fast and furious is neither side wants to price to swell any higher. They need to finish up so they can have the official weigh-in. Beached Whale Shaq has already benefited from all the speculation of his impending arrival to the NBA by possibly getting his first endorsements. He could, for example wear the Weight Watchers logo on the back of his shorts. Another possible endorsement deal could be with Burger King. He can wear a jersy with "The Whopper" emblazened accross his belly. Now, we also know the real reason why Double Tub Shaq didn't make it over for Vegas Summer Leagues. They couldn't find an airplane with double wide seats and floating him over on a barge would have taken to long.
Ah yes, maybe we should just christen him with the name "Da Love Shaq." Just because there is now so much more of him to love. Just having fun. JamFan

Free Spree, Slip On The Glove

Posted by: jamfan on Saturday, September 03, 2005 - 06:52 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - There seems to be a bargain basement free agent market going on out there right now. With the new CBA in place, teams have released players that created luxury tax, and are reluctant to continue spending at high levels to exceed the cap or to go back into luxury tax territory. Oh there are a few situations where certain players seem to have been overpaid, but there are also some bargain basement free agents out there that nobody seems in a rush to sign. Should the Clippers go after one of them? An interesting pick might be Latrell Sprewell. With a coaching change last year in Minnesota and a GM/Coach searching around for answers, Spree's minutes per game dropped from 38 a year ago, to 30 minutes last year. But in analyzing his production, his rebounds and points scored per minute played did not drop off at all. He went for 13 Points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and increased his shooting to 41% . Spree and Cassell were the "warriors" who were credited with the success the Wolves had going to the Western Conference final just over a year ago. Would Spree want to reunite with Cassell on the Clips to see if they could work their magic here? He isn't likely to get a starting spot out there, and after not accepting a contract extension early last year of 21 million over 3 years, is going begging. He will likely sign for the mid level exemption or less. At 2.5 to 5 millions per season, this might be a good bargain for the Clips. He wouldn't start in LA either but would certainly give Coach Dunleavy some interesting matchup choices to make against other rivals. Another interesting prospect who might not mind coming off the bench is the Glove. In the twilight of his career, Gary Payton still scored 11 points with 6 assists last season and actually increased his shooting percentage to an enormous 46%, two points higher than his career average. He has a home and family here and has expressed a desire to return to LA, but not with the Lakers. If he was brought in to back up and tutor Livingston, Cassell and Mobley would now become part of a 3 man rotation at the 2 and 3 spots with Maggette. Again, interesting match up options. Gary can and will be signed for the 5 million exemption or less. A good dream would be to get those two players to share the two exemptions and we would have them both for less that 7 million a season. If that happened, this would be the deepest Clipper team in history. Let's see. Kaman and Rebraca at Center. Brand and Wilcox at PF. Maggette and Spree at SF. Mobley and Cassell at SG. Livingston and Peyton at PG. We are no longer talking being satisfied with making the playoffs. That is a team that would not back off from anybody. The time is now. We can do this without going over the cap. With the Lakers now in a position to do worse than they did last year and possibly even end up in last place, the Clippers truely have the opportunity to take over LA for years to come. It's time to make history. JamFan

    Scott Padgett Rumors Resurface

Posted by: jamfan on Friday, September 02, 2005 - 09:04 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - Here we go again. Recycled an renewed reports and rumors regarding Scott Padgett backing off what was originally reported as a done deal for him to join the Phoenix Suns, are again adding to speculation that he may possibly join the Clippers or Nuggets. Early reports were that he was unhappy with the money being offered by the Suns. Then, as the Suns continued to sign other players their roster got crowded and available minutes for Scott were diminished. They just don't seem to need him as badly anymore so getting more money may not be in the cards. Meanwhile, early reports stated that the Clippers, as well as the Nuggets, had already offered a better deal to Scott than the Suns. Scott will not necessarily get more minutes with either of those ball clubs but he might as well get a better contract if he is going to come off the bench. At 6' 9", and sporting a potent shooting percentage from the outside, he would add some nice depth to a Clipper lineup at the forward position. I have the Clippers finishing ahead of the Nuggets in the standings this season, so he might as well join a winning situation. Don't you love the sound of that? The Los Angeles Clippers, A winning situation......Ahhhh.

Mikki Hears A Sonic Boom, Korolev Waits!

Posted by: jamfan on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 - 03:43 PM
    Announcements
JamFan- Just a quick update on roster moves involving the Clippers. Mikki Moore has reportedly agreed to a deal with the Seattle Supersonics. That leaves the Clippers with only two natural 7' centers. As it stands right now, Wilcox, while backing up Brand, would seem to be the third center behind Kaman and Rebraca. That makes the signing of James Singleton even more important because he has played Center in college as well as PF and SF. Singleton is a bit undersized at 6" 8" to play center in the NBA but gives Coach Dunleavy some flexibility at the forward position. Mikki brought an infectious enthusiasm off the bench, something that endured him to the fans, and made him somewhat of an overachiever. What he lacked in talent he made up for in effort. He will be missed.
Meanwhile, the LA Times is reporting that the agent for Yaroslav Korolev, Mark Fleisher, is saying that there is an offer on the table from the Clippers to CSKA Moscow to buy out their rights to Korolev. The decision is supposed to be made by next Monday, so check with TopBuzz at that time and we will update you with any rumor or announcement. Currently, there is no news or rumors (except those previously reported) on the status of Baby Shaq. Is there anyone out there that speaks Greek and wants to become a foreign correspondent? We have a Mission Impossible for you. JamFan

Ewing & Singleton Pick up Jerseys

Posted by: jamfan on Tuesday, August 30, 2005 - 09:46 AM
    Announcements
JamFan - The Clippers have announced the signing of Daniel Ewing and James Singleton as they round out their roster for training camp. Ewing, drafted in the second round after being one of the Duke standouts last year, played PG as a senior but played SG most of his career. Ewing has a high shooting percentage from NBA 3 pt. range, but his numbers dropped off slightly his senior year while learning to master the PG position. He will be playing guard for the Clips but it's still unclear to me if he will be at the 1 or the 2 or both. No, I could not confirm that he is actually related to Patrick Ewing. That seems to be just a chatroom rumour. Singleton is probably unknown to many of you even though we have told his story in TopBuzz (see article, Rodman A Clipper). After graduating from Murray State and making the All-Conference first team as a senior, he went undrafted so he took his game to Italy for the last two years where he continued to put serious numbers both in scoring and rebounds. He is a double double guy, had 17 in college. Billed as a "Monster Rebounder", he claims to pattern his game after Dennis Rodman. Except he can at least score a little. In Italy he put up 11.8 Pts, 8.6 rebounds, and 2 steals, while also being named the MVP of the Italian league All Star Game. Murry State listed him as a Center, but at 6' 8" he has also played PF. In Italy he was used as a SF and might be slated to be Maggette's back up but is also capable of backing up Brand and Wilcox at the PF spot.
Now the last two remaining questions marks are Korolev and Baby Shaq. Will they, can they, bring them over from Europe? Stay tuned! JamFan

    Guess Who's Coming? Baby Shaq!

Posted by: jamfan on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 10:24 PM
    Announcements
JamFan - It seems that all the rumors of potential roster additions now involve European players who the Clippers are having a hard time making arrangements to get here. Ok, you need to know first of all, that my sources within the Clippers organization are not the GM, the Coach, or the Owner. So anything I report still has to be considered information that may be somewhat reliable but not a done deal by any means. But rumor has it that the Clippers are indeed working on bringing Korolev over this year. But this has already been reported in TopBuzz as a possibility. Moreover, they are apparently actually working on bringing Baby Shaq over this year as well. Now that's something that we have only kind of joked about because there has never been any real rumors in the press before this. In fact, it's only been discussed in TopBuzz. I guess everyone is just going to have to keep reading Topbuzz to find out what's going on with the Clips. Many times rumors are actually started by the agents for players or their friends. Since Baby Shaq doesn't have any connections (friends) over here and doesn't seem to have an agent stateside, we probably won't hear much in the way of rumors in the press. The Clippers don't usually submit press releases until something is a done deal. They tend to work quietly.
So why would they bring Korolev and Baby Shaq over now? One reason could be that the 8 man rotation for the lineup is set; Cassell, Mobley, Livingston, Brand, Kaman, Maggette, Wilcox and Rebraca. These youngsters can now progress at their own pace without being subjected to the pressure cooker right away. Daniel Ewing and Quinton Ross will also have a hard time getting significant minutes unless someone gets hurt. That brings us to 12 players. We reported a couple weeks ago about another player the Clippers were suppose to sign who was billed as a monster rebounder who patterns his game after Dennis Rodman. His name is James Singleton. He played in Italy the last two years after leaving college undrafted. (see article titled "Dennis Rodman, a Clipper") Upon reporting that story, I commented that it was strange his name had never been added to the Clippers roster on their website. As it turns out that deal was only talked about by his agent in the press and apparently a contract has never been signed. Both sides may still have good intentions but I was unable to ascertain what the hold up is, or where the truth lies. If signed that would bring the roster to 13 with Mikki Moore remaining as yet unsigned by the Clippers. I hear he is probably gone. More money will likely be offered to him elsewhere.

Another reason the Clippers might now bring over thier young dr
