Clippers To Trade for Eddie Griffin?

    Announcements
ESPN is reporting a rumor that the Clippers have offered Chris Wilcox to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Eddie Griffin. Reportedly, the Clippers are getting great production out of Brand and Kaman and that makes Wilcox expendable. Wilcox is an inside guy while Griffen likes to shoot from the outside.

I can't believe this rumor is true. The reason Griffen at 6'10" doesn't go inside is because he can't. And if you need an outside shooter, Eddie Griffin is not the guy. His career shooting percentage is only 38%, 31% from 3, and 66% from the line. Walter McCarty shoots better than that and we already have him.

I have recently written that Fred Hoiberg, who has now been cleared by his doctors to play, has his agent gaging interest in Fred coming back this year. Fred is the best 3 point shooter in the game. If you need a guy to come off the bench and shoot from the outside, we can get him without trading anybody. Moreover, if Wilcox is gone and Kaman or Brand gets injured, who could adequately fill in. Griffin can't play inside very well, and Rebraca can't be relied on at this point. Singleton would probably be the guy, but why put ourselves in that postion for Griffen who hasn't proven he can shoot in the NBA.

I believe we should keep Wilcox, match any free agent offer next summer and keep him. Wilcox is going to be a star in this league. If you do trade him, I believe you can get a frontline player who is good enough to start. We have talked about trade scenarios involving Wilcox, but it has been for players like Ron Artest and Paul Pierce, not Eddie Griffin. I'm Jamfan, and that's my opinion. What's yours?

The Clippers should trade Wilcox, but for something of future value!! A young guy that we can develop. With Brand and Kaman set in stone for the next 4 or 5 years, Wilcox will be coming off the bench for the Clippers. Now don't get me wrong, I would love to have Wilcox coming off the bench for Brand and Kaman, he is good, but he will be a restricted free agent soon, and I am almost certain he will get a huge offer, probably a starters salary (think somewhere in the area of what Bobby Simmons got this season). The Clippers don't need to spend that much money for a reserve, expesially someone that will be backing up Brand and Kaman, who will both be getting the lions share of the minutes for years to come. That money would be better spent on the PG spot. With Cassell at 36, he won't be around long. Now that could mean locking up Shawn Livingston, or bringing someone else in. Also, that money should be spread out among 3 or 4 players to strenghten the bench. They should get a solid, but not overpaid backup for Brand and Kaman, a solid swing player, and a solid ball handler, that way this team can be 12 deep. Now if we can get some value for Wilcox, instead of letting him walk like Simmons did, that that will help us in the long run. Eddie Griffin, not worth it, but young guys and/or high draft picks, then make the move!!!

Griffin is a much better rebounder and shot-blocker, so it might be a good swap. However I'm concerned about his off-court problems of the past. Also he re-signed w/ Minnosota last summer, but it's unclear how much he's getting paid & for how long.

Griffin is signed through the 06-07 season for just under 3 million a year with a player option for 07-08. Not bad for a solid back up.

I'm OK with trading Wilcox, but we can do better that Griffin. His off the court problems and lack of shooting ability is suspect. He has dropped out of the rotation with his current team. Are we really going to trade Wilcox for a player whose current coach won't play him? We can and will do better.
