Baby Shaq Goes On The Record

JamFan - An interview with the Clippers second round draft choice of a couple of years ago, Baby Shaq (Sofoklis Schortsanitis), appeared in a spanish language publication UOL Esporte. He gave some insight as to where he is at this point in his career.

Baby says his time with his current Greek team has been very valuable to him in preparing for the NBA. We had some reports that he would be with the Clippers in summer league this year. It didn't happen. But he now says he is most likely to come over next year. He went on to say that the Clippers have told him that it is up to him when he comes to the NBA. I doubt that. I feel the Clippers will decide when and if he comes. His contract situation is also a factor. Baby also said he is 320lbs and needs to lose 33-44 lbs before he comes. But he has been at that weight for about 2 years now. If he has no work ethic now to get in shape at the tender young age of 21, whose to say he is suddenly going to become more committed to his career. What is he waiting for. I have heard before that he wanted to get down to around 275, but that was last year. Since everybody lies about their weight, I wouldn't be surprised if he is really 330 or 340. At that weight in on a frame that at last report was no taller than about 6' 10".

Unfortunately, my spanish is only so good. I know we have some fans over in Europe (Miguel) who follow the Baby Shaq situation more closely than we do. So this is an official request to go read this article, check on his stats and other reports, and give us an update.

Here we go with the traduction...I have to say that the text is written in Portuguese, not Spanish but I'll traslate the better I can. First of all I wanna say that I'm a little dissapointed with Sofo's situation in the Greek team...He hasn't got minutes and he's not showing what he really could do.In his position there are two more experienced players like Papadopoulos and Tsarsaris that are playing well, especially Papadopoulos...I translate (remember my poor English ;-) :

When do you wanna play in the NBA?
I nearly go this year but I wanna go in a better situation for to make an impact.I need more experience and in Olympiacos I'm learning a lot.I wanna go (to the Clips) not the next year maybe the other one.

What have the Clippers said to you?
They have said me that is my decision. When I feel ready,I call them and I go.

Do you like that people call you baby Shaq?
No.I don't like but people insist on it.Shaq is different than me.I wanna make my own name based in me, not in another person.Furtheremore we are two different styles.

    Which are the differences?
Shaq is more dominant than me.Shaq plays "back to the basket" and catch all the rebounds.I'm a more mobile (versatil) player. My shot is better but it's obvious that I'm not his same level.

    What do you wanna improve?
I wanna improve my "back to basket" game and my shot. It must be one of my weapons.

Do you wanna lose more weight?
yes.Right now I'm in 145 kg.I wanna lose 10,15 kg for to be more agile and be soon in NBA

    That's all.
Have you watched any Mundial Championship game? At least this year Spain will not face USA until the Finals if both arrive...

Thanks Jamfan & Miquel for the translation. I saw the Greece vs. China game and Sofoklis did pretty good. It's the first time I've seen him on TV- he is really huge, but surprisingly agile. The power is definitely there, but I'm not sure if he's a good rebounder since he's short for a PF/C and doesn't appear to be a big leaper. But I was impressed, especially with this poweful putback-and-one he had against Yao & Yi. If everything works out and the US goes against Greece in the semifinal we'll get to see first hand how Sofo does against some of the best NBA players. Maybe we'll even see him matched up against his possible future teammate Elton Brand.

Wow- the U.S. just lost to Greece 101-95. Give Greece credit- they hit every single big shot. They shredded the team USA defense with simple pick-n-rolls over and over. To compound matters team USA missed 14 free throws. "Baby Shaq" did great- in fact he outplayed every U.S. big man- whether it be Elton Brand, Dwight Howard, or Chris Bosh. He is nimble around the basket and is a big target to throw the ball to in the post- very impressive- a nice combination of quickness and power. You got to feel bad for EB though- he's dedicated so much time for team USA this year & 4 years ago, and there won't be any gold to show for it. Hopefully the guys can pick up the pieces, win the game tomorrow & get the bronze medal.

Wow!Have you seen the game of Spain???I'm still shocked. This group of players deserve this moment so much...Tremendous!!I have seen the USA game and right now I only can say that basketball is a TEAM sport and the USA were only big players with an awful coach.Coach K has taken horrible decisions like to sit Dwight Howard when he was the best rebounder...Anyways I'll talk more about the USA another day because now I'm so happy with Spain that I have no words. Thanks Pau,Jorge,Josema,Alex,Rudy,Sergio,Marc,Felipe,Carlos.Incredible!!!

Congrats to Spain Miquel- I haven't seen the game yet but will (I recorded it). I thought Spain was a better team than Argentina, especially when you look at the guards. That game vs. Greece for the championship is going to be a great one.

As far as Dwight Howard sitting- I agree- he was huge in the first half with all those rebounds. In the 2nd half I think team USA wanted to go with a smaller lineup to perhaps better defend the pick-n-roll, but it seemed to backfire w/ Greece getting so many layups.
