Artest vs Maggette - No Contest

Anybody who watched last nights game would wonder why in the world the Clippers would want to trade Corey Maggette for Ron Artest. In a match up of two teams trying to make a trade, and a match up between the two players who would be involved in the trade, it was literally NO CONTEST.

Ron Artest does not give the Clippers the outside shooting that they need and he has never been a great outside shooter from the 3. Everything else about Ron Artest we have to put in past tense. He looks like a horrible washed up player at a very young age. His defense isn't even close to what it used to be, his shooting percentage is lousy, and to put his performance in the words of last nights commentators, "He looked like a zombie out there." He looks disinterested. Like he is just going throught the motions. He also looks 20 pounds overweight so he is a half step slow as well. You might remember that just last off season he spoke of retiring and going off to do music. To me he looks like he has already reitred.

On the other hand, Corey Maggette put in one of his usual great performances last night. His shooting percentage is good, his percentage from the line is great, his defense was more than adequate, and his rebounding is solid every night. Moreover, when Corey is in the game, our point spread improves. Last night we were down 6 early in the first quarter. Corey comes in and by mid way throught the second, we were up 6. He leaves and we end up leading at the half by 1. This happens all the time. Most importantly, considering he has been the subject of every trade rumor imaginable, his attitude every night has been unbelievable.

Corey Maggette is the type of guy that you want on your team. Ron Artest is not. If we are indeed going to trade for somebody, it has to be somebody other than Ron Artest. Ron Artest is done. Moreover, many have speculated that the reason the trade didn't move forward is because the Kings asked for another asset in addition Corey to get the deal done. They have got to be kidding. It should be the other way around.

Or better yet, maybe we do not want to do this deal at all. We should consider having Clippers management all get together with Corey for a group hug and declare he is off the market. We can protect Brand, Kaman, Corey, and Livingston, trade one other player along with one of our surplus first round draft picks, and Rebraca's expiring contract, for the outside shooter that we desire. That is enough to get us a good one. And we get to keep Corey.

We have all spoke lately about how our Coach is not performing properly all the time and being out of touch with reality. Well, Elgin Baylor and the owner Donald Sterling both love Corey Maggette. It is Dumleavy who likes Ron Artest. If you watched last nights game, you would wonder what is wrong with Dumleavy's perception of players and the game.

For one thing, most teams are not trying to emulate the Suns style of play, even though they might not go all the way to the extreme the Suns have. But young, fast, athletic players going for it in a run and gun style is where the NBA is heading right now. Not only is scoring up the last couple of seasons, but this style of play is more fun to watch. Dumleavy on the other hand is running a slow down game reminiscent of the Chicago Bulls back in the 80's.

I think we all need to take a step back and really analyze where we are at the moment, what we really need, and how to get there. I hope that after last nights game, Clipper management saw what a BIG mistake they almost made. I hope they take a deep breath, pause, and start to rethink the path forward. We need to keep Corey and add a shooter. We are just one injury away from actually being short handed. And we haven't always been playing that well with the depth we have now. OK, now, everybody, group hug, and send some great vibes to Corey. It is now time for the Clippers fans, when Corey comes to the free throw line, to start a chant. "Keep Corey, fire Dumleavy" or "MVP". If you are at a home game, it is your responsibily to start the chant. Stand up, wave your hands, run up and down an aisle, start the chant, and wait for security to come and get you. Wait a minute, they don't bother "Clipper Daryl."

First off, we can't judge two players, and whether or not they should be traded for one another, off of one game. You forget, that in the first Clipper-King matchup this season back on November 28th, Artest scored 28 points while Maggette scored 6, All of his points came from the free throw line, as he went 0 for 9 from the field. So if you went by the two match-ups between the teams, then you have to say the two players are even.

Artest did look out of it last night. I was at the game and was paying close attention to him. The Kings really don't look like a team that are together and having fun out there. Their team today is totally different from their past teams. The players weren't communiication with one another and I'm not talking just in the game; during warmups, I saw very little interaction between any of their players. Artest could be part of the cause of this or it could be that he just wants out.

Remember, the Kings have undergone many changes since they traded for him last year. First, Rick Adelman, a coach that Artest seemed to like, was let go. Artest also wanted Bonzi Wells back on the team and that didn't happen. So coming into this season, Artest was likely unhappy. Then with the team playing poorly, his unhappiness is just growing. I think Artest will be traded this season and I think he's going to help whoever gets him greatly. He's far from washed up and I think he will prove this on his new team.

Will that new team be the Clippers? I still think it's possible.that he comes here. It all depends on how this Maggette-Dunleavy relationship works. If Maggette played every game like he did last night, then I don't think there would be a problem. He put up good numbers last night but more importantly he played smart. That's area that Dunleavy has a problem with...and I can see why sometimes. There have been many times the past couple of seasons in which Corey has not played smart...quick, forced shots...lack of rotation on defense...out of control play.

I like Maggette as a player and think he can help this Clipper team. However, Corey and Dunleavy have to get on the same page. What does that mean? It means that Dunleavy has to use Corey more by giving him more minutes. Whether or not he starts, Maggette should be getting more minutes, preferably at Mobley's expense since Ross isn't playing much. Also, with Cassell out of the lineup, the Clippers need to run more. Livingston, Maggette, Brand...they should be getting out on the break as much as possible.

Maggette also plays a part in the solution. The last two seasons he's come out and said he's on board with the team and is willing to do whatever he needs to in order to help the team win. And the last two seasons we've heard complaints out of him or his agent about how he should be used. This season it went so far as to him requesting a trade through his agent. I think sometimes Corey thinks he's a better player than what he is. Deep down I think his ego tells him that he's the Clippers Kobe Bryant; that he should be option number 1. However, every good team has players that accept their role and do whatever neccessary to help the team win.

Who know's what's going to happen this season. Will Maggette stay? Will Artest come over? Will the team find a shooter? The Clippers seem to have finally remembered that it all starts with the energy and the effort they bring to the court, especially on the defensive end. Hopefully they can continue this and come back from the upcoming road trip at or above .500. Maybe we should just keep the team intact, and try to get a shooter off the "retired" pile such as Keith Van Horn or Nick Van Exel. They wouldn't cost us a thing and we have one roster spot open. We have some capable shooters in Thomas and Mobley, who are just now starting to come around. Adding one more veteran may not be a bad idea.

Well, I agree with Benoit most of the time. And I agree with many of the things that he said above, but I still feel that if we are going to trade Corey, we can do better than Artest. His head case is to much of a gamble for me. A popular sportwriter wrote just this week that it is about time for Ron to go to another team so he can poison that team too. Corey has struggled at times but all players do. But Corey's off nights are fewer than most, and usually related to coming back from an injury. I think he is more consistant than most, at least with his efforr. Mostly I agree with Benoit that there are some other options to aquire another shooter out there besides trading one of our best players. Opportunities to add without subtracting. Or trade lesser assets with picks etc, to aquire a shooter. Some nights we need another shooter and other nights we need a guy like Corey who can get it done driving to the hoop, getting fouled and hitting a free throw for a 3 point play. Another shooter just makes us good at everything and allows us to beat teams in different ways and with different weapons. And yes, shooting is contagious, just ask players who are gunslingers for the Suns.

Benoit I AGREE. At least with one point you made, that the Clippers should run a little. Clips should not turn into a run and gun Suns team, but we should try to get out in the open floor and push it a little. Especiallyu with a guy like C.Magg and Brand and... hello?!... LIVINGSTON.
the problem? the damn coach does not like that style of play. It was a restriction to Wilcox previous years. It is a restriction to Cmagg and a huge resriction to young Shaun. People our coach is not the best. If we plan to help shaun grow we need to run he ball. We need to get out and use the fastbreak to our advantage. The offense will flow the crowd getss into it, and players play at full potential. You get a very hyped and electrified excitment. Offense then will pickup (alltogether, maybe even shooting). All im saying is we are holding our players down to play in dunleavy's system.

Any GM knows you don't gauge the effectiveness of a player after just one game - especially one who has been injured.

Artest I thought might be a good addition to the Clippers - provided he's properly motivated.

The deal isn't going through which should bring a sigh of relief to many of us out there. I wonder though, if not Artest -- where else can Maggette go? I'd love Maggette to remain a Clipper, but something tells me that it's either going to be Maggette or Dunlevy. And I don't see the Clippers organization getting rid of Dunlevy soon.
