Yet another fold by the Clippers

Posted by: david on Sunday, February 16, 2003 - 01:44 PM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] "That's been the theme of our season," Gentry said. "We give great effort, play hard and we're right there and we can't close the game out. There's no magic formula. You just have to execute. You have to make good plays and good decisions down the stretch. Once again, we did not do that.'

Gentry declined to talk about the two technical fouls he received, which carried an immediate ejection. However, it was clear that he and the rest of the Clippers were frustrated at the disparity in fouls. The Celtics shot 30 free throws, the Clippers attempted 14. Missing five free throws also did not help the Clippers' cause.

"We were up five so we definitely should have pulled this one out," Brand said. "But we had turnovers and they (officials) didn't call fouls even though we were definitely hit. But it goes that way and it's real disappointing."

Rookie Wilcox Gets Start at Center

Posted by: david on Sunday, February 16, 2003 - 01:49 AM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] Wilcox had played in only 21 games before Saturday, averaging 2.3 points in a meager seven minutes a game.

"I think he's a typical 20-year-old kid trying to play in the NBA," Gentry said. "He's trying to get better. He spends time now working on his game.

"It's part of the growth of any young player. We went through the same things with Darius [Miles]. He made mistakes and we put him out there and lived with his mistakes."

Clippers Still Lost in Fourth Dimension

Posted by: david on Sunday, February 16, 2003 - 01:47 AM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] "We have not finished games," Gentry said, prophetically, before the Clippers lost for the 17th time when holding a fourth-quarter lead. "If we were a hockey team, we would be great because we only play three periods."

The Clippers (18-34) held an 82-78 lead with 2:35 to play after the last of Cherokee Parks' 14 points. But J.R. Bremer and Paul Pierce each made two free throws to rally the Celtics into an 82-82 tie moments later.

    Final month Olowokandi target date

Posted by: david on Saturday, February 15, 2003 - 11:43 AM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] It has been nearly two weeks since Clippers center Michael Olowokandi underwent exploratory arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. But even with the Clippers out of playoff contention, Olowokandi hopes to return for the final month.

Team trainer Jasen Powell said the 4-6 week prognosis for Olowokandi's recovery still holds true. Powell said he believes it will be closer to six weeks before the center can play.

    Gentry dismisses confrontation

Posted by: david on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 11:06 AM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] Gentry said the report was overblown.

"He did not charge toward me,'' the coach said Thursday. "I was on the court talking with D.J., Doug and Patrick when (Oakley) said something to the effect that it was their time to be on the court and to get the (expletive) off. D.J. and Patrick stepped in front of him, but no one grabbed him and he didn't have to be restrained.''

After the incident, Gentry called Stu Jackson, the NBA's vice president of basketball operations. Jackson, who is in charge of league discipline, made his ruling Wednesday night.

Oakley declined comment Wednesday. On Thursday he said, "Didn't nothing happen. If something happened, I probably wouldn't have played last night.''

    Bad Passing

Posted by: david on Thursday, February 13, 2003 - 10:14 AM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] Lamar Odom is the Clippers' most turnover-prone player, averaging 3.6 per game. The problem is not so much carelessness but more the attempt by Odom to make the scintillating play when the percentages of the pass connecting with a teammate is low.

"We're spending too much time making the next scoring pass,'' Gentry said. "What we have to do is to find the open guy, and hit him. I told (Odom) that has to be almost like hockey where you might make the pass that leads to the (scoring) pass. You won't get an assist for that, like in hockey, but it's what we have to do.''

Odom played a solid game Wednesday with 19 points, six rebounds, three assists and only one turnover in 34 minutes.

Clippers Can Soon Put James in Full Panic Mode

Posted by: david on Thursday, February 13, 2003 - 10:11 AM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] I mean what's with the one-point victory over Phoenix on Tuesday? That was a devastating victory. There's no question Elton Brand's propensity to play hard every night and the injury that is keeping Michael Olowokandi off the floor are going to make it very difficult for the Clippers to be consistently lousy.

    But they're still the Clippers.

Before Wednesday night's game, the Clippers had the seventh-worst record in the league, which would give them 44 of 1,001 ping-pong balls in the May 18 draft lottery and a 4.4% chance of landing the Akron (Ohio) high school whiz kid.

Frankly, they need to lose more.

    NBA: No Comment on Lawsuit

Posted by: david on Thursday, February 13, 2003 - 10:07 AM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] The NBA on Wednesday had no comment on a federal housing lawsuit filed by the Housing Rights Center against Clipper owner Donald T. Sterling, who owns more than 100 apartment complexes in Southern California.

According to the suit, Sterling said he "did not like Hispanics or blacks as tenants" and that "Hispanics smoke, drink and just hang around the building."

Another Oakley Run-In, Another Clipper Defeat

Posted by: david on Thursday, February 13, 2003 - 10:04 AM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] Charles Oakley, a reserve forward for the Washington Wizards, charged at Clipper Coach Alvin Gentry during the shoot-around Wednesday morning at Staples Center, threatening Gentry with physical harm. Michael Jordan of the Wizards and Dennis Johnson, a Clipper assistant, and others restrained Oakley.

The incident happened as the Clippers were leaving the court and the Wizards were taking it for a workout several hours before Washington's 108-104 victory Wednesday night in front of an arena-record crowd of 20,578.

    Clippers 104, Wizards 108

Posted by: david on Wednesday, February 12, 2003 - 10:10 PM
    Clipper News
The Clippers played well tonight but it wasn't good enough as they were edged by Michael Jordan and the Washington Wizards, 108-104 (box scores). The third quarter proved to be decisive as the Clippers were outscored 33-23 after a 51-all tie at the half. The Clippers mounted a comback in the fourth, got within one point but the Wizards hit big shots and big free throws to hang on for the win. Byron Russell and Christian Laettner, two guys averaging less than 13 points and about 8 rebounds a game, burned the Clippers by combining for 32 points and 21 boards. And another guy, Tyron Lue, who averages 7 and a half points got 21. So some unusual sources of offense for the Wizards really hurt the Clippers, who certainly didn't play a bad game. Andre Miller had another terrific outing- 15 points and 11 assists. Odom had 19 points and 6 boards, Maggette had 22 (only 3 in the second half though), Pike had 15, and Brand also with 15. Elton had an off-night rebounding-wise with only 4, however. But overall again you just have to tip your hat to MJ for setting up his teammates and those guys who stepped up and made a ton of shots. Bad luck for the Clippers tonight I suppose- they played good enough to win but it wasn't to be. The Clippers had 27 assists and only 9 turnovers- I mean that's a great ratio that's rarely seen this season. So this is certainly not a game the Clippers should hang their heads about.

    Clippers 107, Suns 103

Posted by: david on Tuesday, February 11, 2003 - 08:31 PM
    Clipper News
The Clippers played extremely well and earned a difficult victory tonight against the Phoenix Suns, 107-106 (box scores). Both teams had a sensational shooting first half but the Clippers cooled off in the third quarter and the Suns took a 10 point lead. But the Clippers stormed back in the final quarter and held on for dear life for the win. Quite a few heroes for tonight's game- Brand started like a man possessed and finished with 29, 11, and 2 blocks in only 33 minutes. A huge all-star level performance by Elton. Q provided a giant lift off the bench with 20 points (3-6 from deep) and 6 boards. Odom was also terrific- 16 points (7-9 shooting), 7 boards, 5 assists, and 3 steals. And what about Andre Miller? He no doubt had his best game in a looooong time. He missed some shots early but he continued to dish the rock well and then in the fourth quarter he had one big basket after another to guide the team to victory. Andre finished with 19 points and 9 assists. Interestingly Gentry went with a lineup of Odom, Brand, Maggette, Q, and Miller down the stretch and it worked great, especially since the Suns don't have a dominant center. Overall it was just a great win- the Suns really played well, hit their shots, but the Clippers simply played better. We'll see now how if the Clippers can continue their excellence tomorrow night against MJ and the Wizards.

    Clippers seek renewed commitment

Posted by: david on Tuesday, February 11, 2003 - 11:42 AM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] "I was just chillin' with my family. I wasn't really a part of what was going on,'' Richardson said. "I got a lot of rest even though I worked out every day with my cousin, Carlos Emmons, who is a linebacker with the Philadelphia Eagles.''

Richardson said he was inundated with questions about what was wrong with the Clippers.

"The biggest disappointment to me is not that we're losing, because we lost the first two years that I was here,'' Richardson said. "But we had never really gotten booed by our fans. Our fans loved us. They loved the way we played hard and that we were exciting and it looked like we were having fun. But now, every game we play, it seems like we're down 20 points. I'm sure they're frustrated. This was supposed to be their big year when we were going to make the playoffs. And now that it looks like it's not going to happen, they have a right to be dissatisfied because they've come up from the bottom with us.''

    'Same Old Clippers'

Posted by: david on Tuesday, February 11, 2003 - 10:27 AM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] By then, Gentry had had enough and played the reserves for the fourth quarter of an 89-80 loss last Wednesday at Detroit.

"Obviously, the approach has got to be that we've got to look at the last 35 games or 34 games or what is it?" Gentry started to say Monday. When told the Clippers had 33 games remaining, he continued, "Thirty-three? That's even better. We've got to look at it like it's a whole new season. It's been disappointing up to this point playing like we have."

Asked if he were concerned that the Clippers would mail in the rest of the season, Gentry said, "I don't think this team is like that. We haven't played well, but we have played hard. We've just made poor decisions and haven't made shots."
