    Clippers 101, Heat 82

Posted by: david on Tuesday, November 12, 2002 - 07:37 PM
    Clipper News
After a lackluster two quarters the Clippers dominated the second half of tonight's game against the Miami Heat tonight and ran away to an impressive 101-82 win (box scores). It was the Elton Brand and Andre Miller show most of the game. Elton had 25 points and 20 rebounds- wow! And Andre Miller's determined play kept the pressure on the Heat as he constantly drove to the basket and got fouled. He ended up with 22 points (14-15 free throws), 8 assists, and 6 rebounds. Maggette, celebrating his 23rd birthday tonight, was terrific once again with 19. Pike had a solid game with 13 and Olowokandi, who had only 2 points and 1 rebound at the half, really perked up and ended up with 19 points, 4 boards, and 3 blocks.

The Clippers really took care of the ball after the first quarter when they had 6 T.O.'s. Another interesting stat- the Clipper bench only had 3 points granted in only 31 total minutes of play. Keyon Dooling had those 3 points to go with 6 assists. But obviously right now with the starting 5 playing so well it's easy to see why Gentry is reluctant to go to the bench more.

BTW Q was put on the injured list before the game tonight- hopefully he can get well soon and get back to last season's form, but he'll be out for at least 5 games. Tremaine Fowlkes came off from the injured list to replace Q.

Miller Adjusting, but Doing His Part

Posted by: david on Tuesday, November 12, 2002 - 02:47 AM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] "He's still figuring out our players," Gentry said of Miller, who played during training camp with free agents who were filling in for injured starters and are no longer on the roster. "He's still learning where Michael wants the ball in the low post and where Elton wants the ball."

Said Miller: "We've got some great young talent here. We have a chance to be very good. My job is to get guys in a position where they can succeed. It's really pretty simple. But it's not all on me."

Young Clips not ready for Miller time

Posted by: david on Monday, November 11, 2002 - 02:30 PM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] The general perception in the media is that the Clippers are blessed with a rosterful of talented players -- yet nobody is quite sure what the sum of the parts will add up to. Whereas Sports Illustrated predicted that the Clips would be the Western Conference's 10th best team, ESPN The Magazine foresaw a fifth-place finish and a trip to the playoffs. So, let's take a closer look at the Clippers and try to determine the team's true destiny.

    This time, a right turn

Posted by: david on Monday, November 11, 2002 - 10:06 AM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] It was simple, really. All it took for the Clippers to freeze their road winless streak was crisp offensive execution, sizzling shooting, key defensive stops at crucial junctures and the annual Corey Maggette homecoming feast.

For the third consecutive game on this trip, the Clippers held a lead going into the fourth quarter. This time they held on, sparked early by their offense but in the final two minutes by their defense.

Players Profit From This Inside Information

Posted by: david on Monday, November 11, 2002 - 01:07 AM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] "We tried to keep dumping it inside, so that at the very least, they would have to double-team the post," Gentry said. "Michael got us off to a great start and Elton made some great plays at the end."

The Clippers moved the ball so well near the end of the game that Gentry went with only Brand as a post-up player, keeping Olowokandi on the bench for the final 5:30. Gentry believed -- correctly, as it turned out -- that the quicker Brand was better suited to guard Orlando's Pat Garrity.

    Clippers Are Grin Reapers

Posted by: david on Monday, November 11, 2002 - 01:05 AM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] The Clippers finally got it right Sunday. Oh, they were far from flawless, but at the end, they ripped a game from the hands of the Orlando Magic and managed relieved smiles afterward in their locker room.

Instead of yielding to Tracy McGrady's smooth drives and arcing jump shots and Darrell Armstrong's hot shooting late, the Clippers played a gritty style that had been notably absent during their first five games.

    Odom Update

Posted by: david on Sunday, November 10, 2002 - 05:12 PM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] With each passing day, Lamar Odom's right ankle gets closer to being healed, thanks to the twice-daily treatment he receives from trainer Jasen Powell.

"Hopefully, I'm only three weeks away," Odom said.

That would put him ahead of schedule because the projected date for his return was thought to be late December. However, Powell said Odom has progressed to the point where he can do all of the court conditioning drills with his teammates and the individual shooting drills. The only aspect of practice that Odom definitely has to be held out of is scrimmaging.

While looking forward with great relish to his return, Odom said his focus would be to just fit into the team flow as it is now.

"Michael (Olowokandi) has picked up his game so much," Odom said. "Elton (Brand) plays like an All-Star every night. We have an All-Star point guard (Miller) and some good complementary players. So, it's not going to be that hard for me. All I have to do is play basketball and they'll push me to do the rest."

    Clippers 120, Magic 117

Posted by: david on Sunday, November 10, 2002 - 04:53 PM
    Clipper News
The Clippers played the way they are capable of playing as they outlasted the Orlando Magic, 120-117 (box scores) this afternoon. It was a game of runs, and when the Clippers were down by 8 with about 3 minutes to go they didn't panic, they didn't turn the ball over, and they didn't make bad decisions. They kept their poise, chipped away at the lead while playing solid defense, and let the broad shoulders of Elton Brand carry them to victory in the final minute. Brand made a huge block on a 3-point attempt, saved the ball, and had a huge offensive rebound in the last minute of play. Elton finished with 16 points, 12 boards, and 2 blocks.

Also every Clipper who played did very well- Miller had 29 points and 7 assists, Maggette had 19 points, 6 boards, the Kandiman continued his terrific play with 21 and 10, and Dooling played good D and sank 2 huge free throws. And probably the difference in tonight's game was Pike with 21 points on 8 of 9 shooting. In the previous games seemingly every Clipper starter had solid numbers except Pike. Well he got the ball and made the most of it today for sure.

    Sterling Doomed to Repeat Himself

    Clipper News
    [excerpt] Dear Donald,

I have seen the future. Unfortunately, it looks exactly like the past.

Not that it comes as a surprise, after 22 farce-filled seasons, but this would be your all-timer. If you mess this one up, it will stand as your monument.

Gentry Is Concerned About Poor Choices

Posted by: david on Sunday, November 10, 2002 - 02:09 AM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] "We've got to make better decisions," Coach Alvin Gentry said Saturday. "We've got to be smarter. Our effort has been fine. We play a team like New Jersey [Friday] and we're up by eight or nine points and we turned the ball over three straight possessions and they scored on three straight possessions.

    Maggette Is Playing Hurt

    Clipper News
[excerpt] Maggette is determined to play as well as he can for as long as he can despite having damaged cartilage.

"That's what they're trying to do," Maggette said of the Clippers' attempts to persuade him to have surgery. He added that he won't agree to have the procedure, "Until I say so."

    Clippers Hit Pity Limits

[excerpt] Net Coach Byron Scott, a 1983 first-round pick by the Clippers, feels Coach Alvin Gentry's pain.

"All these guys are playing for a contract, which makes it tough on Alvin," Scott said, cutting to the crux of a situation that could have easily been solved by management during the off-season.

    Clippers 92, Nets 106

Posted by: david on Friday, November 08, 2002 - 06:51 PM
    Clipper News
The Clippers were blitzed by the New Jersey Nets in the fourth quarter tonight as they were outscored 29-14 on the way to a 106-92 defeat (Read the entire story). Like the previous game, turnovers once again plagued the Clippers. Elton Brand and Andre Miller had 7 of those each. In the final period it seemed like everytime the Clippers gave up the ball it lead to a layout or a flying slam dunk at the other end. That and how the they couldn't stop Jason Kidd who lit them up for 35.

The Clippers can still salvage a .500 record for the road trip by beating both Orlando and Miami. They really need to start winning to restore some confidence and to halt their continuing slide in the standings.

Gentry's review includes thumbs up for defense

Posted by: david on Friday, November 08, 2002 - 10:14 AM
    Clipper News
[excerpt] Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said he saw some encouraging signs in Wednesday's 101-99 overtime loss at Philadelphia, particularly on defense.

The Clippers held the 76ers to 37.2 percent shooting.

"We did a good job defensively, and I felt that we rebounded the ball well,'' Gentry said Thursday. "The only alarming thing was the turnovers. We can't have that many and expect to win on the road.''
