Miller trade signals brighter future for Clippers
Posted by: david on Thursday, August 08, 2002 - 09:14 PM

[excerpt] Cleveland got the better deal. Go ahead and laugh, but what's really funny is that no one has picked up on the fact that the Cavs are going to tank this season in order to get LeBron James. The Spurs might not 'fess up to it, but they did the same thing to get Tim Duncan in the 1997 draft -- a move that later won them a championship.
Darius Miles is an intriguing talent. He's athletic and charismatic with high energy, but the Clippers are gambling big-time that Andre Miller will stay in LA, that Miles won't get any better and there won't be mutiny among the remaining Clippers (Quentin Richardson, Keyon Dooling, Corey Maggette and Lamar Odom all close friends of Miles).

Clippers should reach playoffs

The following excerpt from this recent Foxsports.com article talks about the Clippers' playoff chances:
It was refreshing that the other major deal in the last week, the Clippers-Cavaliers trade, primarily was about basketball, although Andre Miller's free agency at the conclusion of the season can't be what Donald T. Sterling wants to think about every morning for the next year.
I believe the Clippers just vaulted past the SuperSonics, Jazz and Timberwolves in the Western Conference. Not only do I believe they will return to the playoffs, I believe they have a chance of winning a first-round series.
A lot can happen between now and next spring — let's not forget that Lamar Odom has a checkered history — but if the Clippers are healthy when the playoffs begin, there's not a team in the West that will want to face them in a five-game series, and that includes the Lakers.

Tough Act to Follow

[excerpt] Longtime Clipper announcer Ralph Lawler said he too is happy where he is and added, "I wouldn't want to walk in the shoes of the guy who has to fill Chick's shoes." But Lawler realizes a lot of announcers, particularly young ones, would jump at the chance.
"I think some people will covet the Laker job," he said. "They'll be coming out of the woodwork. They'll mostly be minor league and college announcers. Those guys will do anything to get the job.

Ralph Lawler's comment on Chick Hearn
Posted by: david on Tuesday, August 06, 2002 - 10:57 PM
Clipper News
|
The Southern California Sports Report aired a portion of an interview with Ralph Lawler on the passing of Chick Hearn- here's what I got from the clip:
Ralph: People who are in their 50's now have been listening to him since they were 10 years old. People who are in their 30's have been listening to him their entire lives. They don't know life without Chick Hearn. You just felt good. He's a real feel-good kind of guy, and that's a pretty nice thing to leave behind.

The Lakers' Legendary Voice

[excerpt] On April 9, Hearn returned to his familiar seat at Staples Center, calling the play-by-play during a 30-point Laker victory over the Utah Jazz. Though his voice sounded weak at the beginning of the broadcast, Hearn sounded more robust as the game progressed, clearly enjoying the appreciative applause from the fans and the opportunity to entertain local radio and television listeners with his unique wordplay once again.
"This is the happiest I've been since I married Marge!" he exclaimed on the air, referring to his wife of nearly 64 years. Half a beat later, he was quickly back to business: "Shaq down the middle ... BLOWS THE LAYUP!"

Hearn’s voice will live on forever

[excerpt] You didn’t have to be a beat writer, or an NBA player, or a politician or celebrity, to be in Chick’s inner circle, because it was huge and ever expanding. Anybody who has lived in Los Angeles for the past 42 years, who has paid even mild attention to the Lakers, has a Chick Hearn story. If you could hear his voice, you were his friend.

Chick Hearn, My Best Friend, By Bill Walton
Posted by: david on Monday, August 05, 2002 - 11:20 PM
Clipper News
|
[excerpt] Growing up in a non-athletic household without a television set, my imagination was driven by books, newspapers and my small, hand held transistor radio. As I collapsed into bed on a nightly basis --- my dreams of endless games having been fulfilled -- I convinced my parents that I was, indeed, packing it in for the evening and, with a good night's sleep, that I would be ready for more tomorrow. Little did they know that that is when the real action began for me. Under the covers, under the pillow, it was the beginning of my most exciting love affair ... and only 10 years old ... Chick, the world and me ... what could ever be better?

Chick Hearn passes away at 85

Yes this is a Clipper website but myself as well as I'm sure every basketball fan who's ever listened to the legendary Laker broadcaster are deeply saddened by Chick Hearn's untimely passing. He graced every Laker broadcast with his enthusiastic, witty, and un-biased play-by-play for a remarkable 42 years. He was a true icon of sports broadcasting, and his incredible 3,338 consecutive games streak will never be touched. As the Lakers won their their champion last season I suppose the refrigerator closed for the last time.... We'll miss you so much Chick!!!

Clippers Got Better End of Andre Miller Trade
Posted by: clipperfan35 on Monday, August 05, 2002 - 09:24 AM
Clipper News
|
[excerpt] Maybe getting Darius Miles from the Los Angeles Clippers was a good move for the Cleveland Cavaliers, but for some reason, I think L.A.'s other team got the better end of the bargain by adding Andre Miller to its roster.
The Clippers have a young and talented team, and now, after shipping Miles off to Northeast Ohio, they just might have the point guard to turn them into contenders.

Clippers Trade in Their Miles for Stability

[excerpt] Randy Hill of Foxsports.com on the Clippers' decision to trade popular Darius Miles to Cleveland for point guard Andre Miller. "I understand the reluctance to embrace a farewell to Darius. The kid can be exciting as your final car payment.... But Miller, who led the league in assists last season, provides a legitimate floor leader capable of steering the Clippers into the playoffs.

[excerpt] GETTING BETTER
If the Cleveland Cavaliers want to sell tickets, then Darius Miles might just be their guy.
If the Los Angeles Clippers want to make a real push for the playoffs -- and maybe do something once they get there -- then trading for Andre Miller was a smart move.
That's not say that this trade was even, as the Clippers clearly were winners in the deal that sent Miles and Harold Jamison to Cleveland for Miller and Bryant Stith.
At least, they are for now.

McInnis to the Blazers?

Clipper News

[excerpt] The Trail Blazers have made contact with free agent Jeff McInnis and could be close to signing the former Los Angeles Clippers point guard.
Agent Bill Strickland said the Blazers' talks with McInnis are "progressing" and that his "fate may be known to all" as early as next week. McInnis, who averaged a career-high 14.6 points and 6.2 assists last season with the Clippers, is familiar to the Blazers' coaching staff.

Angels player talk about the trade
Posted by: david on Friday, August 02, 2002 - 09:21 AM
Clipper News

Here's an excerpt from a LA Times article today on the Angels about the Clipper trade:
That's why I was caught off-guard when Adam Kennedy walked up and asked: "What do you think about the trade?"
What trade? Was there some last-minute deadline deal I missed? He couldn't be talking about the Angels sending Jorge Fabregas to Milwaukee for Alex Ochoa, could he? Was that one even worth analyzing?
Sensing the confusion, he clarified: "The trade the Clippers made."
Oh, that trade. Like it a lot. Andre Miller is one of the top five point guards in the NBA. Kennedy likes it too, although he said: "I hate to see Darius Miles go."
As if paying tribute to Miles, Kennedy made a highlight play in the sixth inning, with his diving stop to rob Bernie Williams of a hit.
