Clipper News
|
[excerpt] Chris Kaman, who the Clippers feared might be sidelined through the exhibition season because of a herniated disk in his back, might be closer to playing than they first thought.
"He's been running the floor really well," Coach Mike Dunleavy said of the rookie center from Central Michigan. "So I imagine that, maybe by the end of the week, depending on how well he's responding to all the running, he might be able to start getting a little contact in."

[excerpt] Dunleavy is approaching his transformation of the Clippers as an assignment that will take time.
"My mindset is long term, and it's to play younger guys and develop," he said. "We're not one of the top six teams in the West. Everyone knows who they are. They spent $100 million on their guys. They have a lot of talent; they have a lot of veterans.

[excerpt] To his new mates, Olden is "old school," which is fine with him.
"Whatever they want, whatever they need," he said. "I'm here to do whatever this team needs to do to win. If I play, I play. If I don't, I'm still going to be happy for these guys and help them. It's not about anything other than the Clippers."
He'd like to play forever.
"I don't feel as good as I did when I was 21, but I'm not expected to," he said. "But I know I'm still outrunning some of these young guys."

[excerpt] Drobnjak, who has played two NBA seasons and in April scored a career-high 26 points against the Clippers, said he was convinced he should leave the SuperSonics after a summer in which the team never made him a serious offer.
Conversations with Dunleavy, he said, sold him on the Clippers.
"It was just about playing time, how we're going to play, how he's going to use me," Drobnjak said of the talks. "That's it
"I decide to move. Clippers was best offer and now I'm here."

[excerpt] New head coach Mike Dunleavy opened his first Clipper training camp at College of the Desert in Palm Desert, Ca. Tuesday morning. 19 players were on hand including veterans Elton Brand, Corey Maggette and Olden Polynice. The trio had been excused from the Saturday-Sunday workouts under terms of the collective bargaining agreement that restrict early practices to players with less than 4 years of experience.
There is no doubt that there is a better focus among the players at this year's camp. The new coaching staff has demanded and received the respect and attention of the collection of 9 returning players, 6 rookies and 4 newcomer veterans.

[excerpt] It could be more than two weeks before they know for sure, but the Clippers might have found a starting center Saturday.
While running through the first day of training camp at L.A. Southwest College, they also were busy working behind the scenes to bring in Predrag Drobnjak, a starter in 69 games for the Seattle SuperSonics last season.
The 6-foot-11, 272-pound Drobnjak, a restricted free agent, has reached agreement with the Clippers on a four-year, $10-million contract and as of late Saturday, the Clippers and SuperSonics were working on a sign-and-trade deal that would allow Drobnjak to join the Clippers this week.
