Dunleavy Meets With Sterling
Posted by: david on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 - 12:31 AM
Clipper News
|
[excerpt] After interviewing with owner Donald Sterling for several hours Friday afternoon, Dunleavy has told sources around the league that he's willing to accept the challenge of working with one of sports' worst professional franchises.
But that doesn't mean Dunleavy is a lock for the job with the Clippers, who have had previous discussions with Paul Silas and Rick Carlisle. Silas was hired June 2 to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Ralph Lawler draft workouts journal (June 16)

Clipper News

[excerpt] Ka-boom! That, or a reasonable facsimile, was the sound that was heard shortly after 10AM Monday at the Clippers training site at L.A. Southwest College.
7-4, 300 pound Russian Center, Pavel Podkolzine, went up to contest a shot by 6-9, 313 pound Greek power forward Sofoklis Schortsanitis. Sofoklis went down and stayed down for 10-minutes, while Pavel grasped his lower back and retired to the sidelines shortly after their pre-draft workout resumed. It was not a wasted day, but a disapointing one for General Manager Elgin Baylor and his staff.

Show me the money

[excerpt] The Clippers could renounce all their free agents and have enough money to sign Tim Duncan, Jason Kidd and Jermaine O'Neal. There also could be world peace, a cure for cancer and the Hawks meeting the Grizzlies in the Finals. Realistically, frugal Clips owner Donald Sterling will re-sign a couple of his restricted free agents to make sure he meets the league's minimum salary threshold, and then put the checkbook away.

Dunleavy is Clippers' primary target
Posted by: david on Monday, June 16, 2003 - 11:47 PM
Clipper News
|
[excerpt] Mike Dunleavy interviewed with Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald T. Sterling over the weekend, league sources told ESPN.com, to underline Dunleavy's status as the Clippers' top coaching candidate.
Friday's meeting was Dunleavy's second interview with the Clippers, and made Dunleavy the first coach to meet face-to-face with Sterling. Clippers general manager Elgin Baylor, who conducted Dunleavy's first interview, previously interviewed ex-Detroit coach Rick Carlisle at the recent pre-draft camp in Chicago. Clippers interim coach Dennis Johnson has also re-interviewed with the club in hopes of retaining the job.

Clippers not to retain Dennis Johnson?

The following excerpt from this article say that the Clippers have decided not to keep Dennis Johnson as head coach:
Lost in the shuffle of the NBA coaching carousel has been the Los Angeles Clippers job, held by interim hire Dennis Johnson after Alvin Gentry was fired. According to a league source, Johnson won't be back, and the Clippers have narrowed their decision to two recently deposed coaches: ex-Pistons boss Rick Carlisle and ex-Wizards coach Doug Collins.

Ralph Lawler's mock draft

Clipper News

[excerpt] #6, Pavel Podkolzin - Russia. Ralph's Take:
Wowed ‘em in Chicago work-out and he’s shooting up the draft charts. Don’t be shocked if Toronto or Miami cut in line and take this 7-4, 300 pound, 18 year old before the Clippers get their shot at him. That would make Bosh or Ford available here.

[excerpt] Remember your childhood, when they opened the gate to the merry-go-round and you would rush to nab one of those gleaming horses on the outer edges that danced up and down?
The latecomers got stuck with the non-moving horses and chariots in the middle — the equivalent of the Clippers in the current NBA coaching carousel.
The prancing ponies are gone now. Larry Brown went to Detroit and Paul Silas is off to coach LeBron James in Cleveland.

Well it looks like Larry Brown is not going to be coaching the Clippers after all. But hey Rick Carlisle- that guy's a really good coach too- so that might be a new possibility for the Clippers to pursue.
