Clippers 90, Grizzlies 84 (Summer League Play)

After a shaky first quarter, the Clippers cut down on their turnovers and controlled the boards in the second half on their way to a 90-84 (box score) victory over Memphis. Al Thornton had a terrific game as he put on a display of all his skills and athleticism. He drained long jumpers, flew in for offensive rebound tip-ins, and even made a spectacular dunk in open court as he spun away from a defender. Despite racking up 9 fouls, Al also played solid defense on Rudy Gay, and finished with 19 points and 10 boards. Chris Kaman finally asserted himself tonight. He did pretty much anything he wanted inside as he dropped in 21 points on 7 o 9 shooting and snatched 9 boards. Chris didn't shoot as many jumpers today- something he certainly still needs to work on. He admitted in the post-game interview that he was out of shape but still it was good commitment on his part to come out and play. Paul Davis continued his solid play from the last game with 12 points and 6 boards. He is really showing some good range on his jumper, though he really needs to work on finishing stronger around the hoop (instead of fading away to avoid contact). Guillermo Diaz had another rough shooting night (4 for 13) but he played more under control and didn't force shots. He was able to show off his hops with a scintillating power-slam on a Clipper fast break. Jared Jordan was solid once again as he kept the offense in control and made great decisions. Jared finished with 6 points, 6 assists, and 4 boards. He has curiously rebounded pretty well during the summer league- a testament of his timing and clever positioning on the court. Amara Sy played hard in limited minutes and contributed with 10 points and 3 rebounds. Abukar and Gansey didn't shoot well but helped out with solid D. Korolev was missing in action again today, and as Benoit Benjamin alluded to in the Forum it was most likely due to contract issues.

Overall it was a solid team effort against a talented Grizzly summer league team. The Clippers will finish their schedule with a game vs. the Kings on Sunday. That game will be web-only, but it was definitely nice being able to watch this game on regular TV.

Wasn't Kaman the player who had to work this summer? Now I hear that he's out of shape...Kaman, Kaman...

Yeah I know- I was pretty surprised to hear him say that he hasn't really done much basketball-wise so far this summer until the summer league. Looks like he's rounding into shape now though, and he says he'll definitely stay in shape the rest of the summer.
